Educ 304 Field Study

Episode 3

Notice

What concepts have been emphasized in the task and infographics? Give at least four.

1.The main problerts in the classroom that is needed in solve

2. The models that you will be using.

3. The procedures and steps.

4. Elements in the cycle.

Since the 3 models are all for action research, what are the common elements of the three?

● They share elements, based on what I've seen in the three Acton Research models They have thet
same common characteristics, which is what they have in common. They also have a cycle that include
elements like, observing, reflecting, planning, acting, evaluating, and modifying. The elements that I
mentioned above are the common ways of action researchers to collect data. To summaries, action
research put ideas to the test as they are developed and provides real time feedback on what works or
how it works.

Analyze

Choose the AR sample Abstract that you submitted in Episode 2.

• Analyze the component model out of the 3 preneedsed.

If you choose to compare with Model B-Nelson, O. 2014, here are the components.

Title and Author of the Action Research: IMPROVING READING COMPREHENSION THROUGH HIGHER-
ORDER THINKING SKILLS by Brigitte A. McKown, B.S. and Cynthia L. Barnett, B.S.

Key Components

OBSERVE

The Problem:
The researcher in this research have seen that thier students experience difficulty with the process of
reading comprehension, which causes them great concern as educators. The researchers feel more time
is typically spent teaching students how to do the worksheets, instead of teaching reading strategies to
improve reading comprehension. Through the teacher researchers’ observations and students’ written
responses on comprehension worksheets, evidence has been found that their students struggled to
derive meaning from the text they have read.

REFLECT

Reflection:

The area of focus for this research project is improving reading comprehension through the use of
higher-order thinking skills. Without a solid foundation of reading skills the teacher researchers feel
children will struggle throughout their schooling and adult life. By learning the best comprehension
strategies and how to best teach these strategies to the students, the researchers hope to provide the
solid foundation needed to succeed.

PLAN

Plan of Action

The researcher was using three different tools were used to assess them of the changes in their
students’ learning. One of the tools used by the researchers to gather data were the
Metacomprehension Strategy Index (Appendix B). This tool was used to measure the students’
awareness of their strategic reading process before the strategies were introduced. The
Metacomprehension Strategy Index was administered again the week of January 26, 2007 to gather
post-intervention data with students in the researchers’ second and third grade classrooms. This tool
was used to ascertain whether students increased their awareness of strategic reading processes.

ACT

Implementation

The teacher researchers administered the Metacomprehension Strategy Index (MSI) to see if the
strategies changed student approaches to reading. The MSI measures students’ knowledge of reading
strategies used before, during, and after reading. The teacher researchers noted the new activities led to
an increase in student knowledge of the reading strategies in all parts of the MSI.
● What have you understood about the concept of Action Research and how will these be utilized in
your practice?

■ The action research process is used to improve educational practices. Taking action, evaluating it, and
reflecting on it are some of it methods. It's methods that gathered evidence in order to make the
procedure changes. Action research plan are also developed, implemented, allowing for a continuous
cycle of a reflection and revision. Furthermore, these will be used in my practice teaching to put all these
strategies into action.

Write Action Research Prompts

OBSERVE

Remembering my classroom observations in FS 1, I noticed that there are many questions that I raised in
my mind. These include:

a. What are the competencies that the teacher's always use? Is it effective even up us this day?

b. Poor performance of the students in Basic Grammar.

c. What are the strengths and weakhirrses of that specific competency

REFLECT

Thinking deeply about those problems, perhaps something must have been done to solve the problem
or answer the question, like:

a. eflecting on what part of the subject that needs to focus more.

b. What are the skills that need in work on?

c. What are the steps in determining the problems?

PLAN

Now, that I am in FS 2, I plan to make a plan for my solution to problem b. Poor performance of the
students in Basic Grammar, because now a days student refuse to stay more in grammar because of
lackness of interest or etc.

ACT

My action will come later, given enough time in FS 2 or during my Teaching Internship.I am hoping that
during my teaching Intenship, I will finish my Action Research and provide answer and solutions
regarding to this problem.

Check for Mastery

Direction Check thum the choices, what answer's respond to the question correctly and put an X if
otherwise.

1. Action research requires a teacher to be:

/ Observant of what is happening in the classroom

/ Asking oneself of how to improve tenching

X Follow tog the daily routine all the time

/ Finding ways on how children should learn better

X Blaming learners for their inability to leseh

2. There are many ways of doing action research which follow a cyclical process. The process include:

/ Observe, Reflect, Plan, Act

X Observe, Plan, Act, Reflect

X Reflect, Act, Plan, Observe

X Plan, Observe. Act, Reflect

X Modify, Observe, Flan, Reflect

3. As an action researcher, I will be developing my skill as a person who is

/ Systematic

/ Reflective

/ Rigorous

/ Futuristic

/ Situational

4. On which of the following would you choose to conduct an Action Research. Why?

/ Changes in the classroom practices. Why?

X Effects of curriculum restructuring Why

/ Linderstanding of self as a teacher. Why?

/ Teaching a new process to the students. Why?

5. Which of the following relates closely to what action ruscateh is?

/ Used tis address practical problems in the classroom

/ Refers only to everyday life of the learners

/ Allows teachers to study their own classroom

/ Hrings theories and practices together

Work on my Artifacts

Your artifact will be a full blown completed Action Research.
