COMPUTER 2 Lesson 1: THE COMPUTER

* Computer - is an electronic hardware device

- It operates and functions under the control of instruction in its
memory called programs.
- People use computers to do certain tasks and attain certain
objectives. A computer cannot work on its own. It needs
people
to operate.
* A computer works like a human brain. Like the brain, the computer needs
information to work. The information entered into the computer is called
data.
* Computers can receive and accept data. The data is then processed using
a
program set by the user. Some examples of data that can be entered into
the computer are texts, pictures, images, sounds and videos. The
computer
processes these data and then produces an output that can be used by
the user.
* Processed information are saved in the computer’s storage.

Advantages of using the computer

1. Speed- computer operates on data and commands at incredibly fast

speed.
- In one second, billions or trillions of operations are done by the
computer.
2. Storage- Computer can store enormous amount of data and information
in
its memory. This information can easily transferred and used
anytime.
3. Reliability- Computers are made of modern technology.
They can operate continuously the whole day.
4. Communicate- People can connect with others by the use of computers.
- Computers have made it possible for people to talk and
see each other over the Internet.

Disadvantages of using the computer

1. Privacy- People have to be careful in sharing photos and information on

the
internet. There are some people with bad intention that may
use
your information.
2. Health risks- Long and improper use of the computer can lead to pain or
injury. It can affect your eyes, hands wrists, neck and back.
3. Environment- Old computers must be disposed properly. Computer
parts
may release toxic or dangerous materials. Heat
generated by
the computer may add to the global warming.
4. Use of power- Computer needs electricity to run. Even though
computer
consumes only little electricity, with many computers
around
it will result to high electricity usage.

Elements of a Computer System

1. People- People are the most important element of a computer system.

2. Procedure- Procedures are the step by step instructions to follow when
using
the hardware, software and data.
3. Software- Software are the programs or instructions that a computer
must
follow to do its task. The purpose of software is to process
data
into useful information for people.
4. Hardware- Hardware is the physical equipment that you can feel and
touch.
Examples of hardware are CPU, mouse, keyboard, printer,
speakers and monitor.
5. Data- Data include texts and numbers, sounds, images and videos that
you
input into the computer for processing.
6. Connectivity- Connectivity means that a computer must be connected
to
other computers especially through the internet. Using the
internet, people can share and access data from all over
the world.

Activity 1: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and write FALSE if

not.

__________ 1. Personal information in the computer can be viewed and

stolen.
__________ 2. Long and improper use of the computer can lead to injuries.
__________ 3. Old computer parts do not release toxic and cannot harm the
environment.
__________ 4. Computer needs electricity to run.
__________ 5. Computer helps people communicate and see each other.

Activity 2: Write A if the sentence shows an advantage of using the

computer
and D if not.
