Test Report

Test Name Results Units Bio. Ref. Interval

CYTOMEGALOVIRUS (CMV) PCR, QUANTITATIVE

(Real Time PCR)
Type of Specimen EDTA PLASMA

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA Target Not Detected IU/mL

Interpretation
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| RESULT IN IU/mL | RESULT IN | Analytical Interpretation |
| | log(IU/mL) | |
|--------------------|--------------|----------------------------------------------|
| Target | Target | CMV DNA not detected |
| not detected | not detected | |
|--------------------|--------------|----------------------------------------------|
| <35 | - | CMV DNA detected, less than 35 IU/ml |
|--------------------|--------------|----------------------------------------------|
| >=35 to <= 10000000| - | CMV DNA detected within the linear range |
| | | of the assay |
|--------------------|--------------|----------------------------------------------|
| >10000000 | - | CMV DNA detected,greater than >10000000 IU/ml|
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note
1. This test is performed on plasma or serum sample only.
2. Linear reporting range of the assay is 35 to 1 x 10000000 IU/ml.

Clinical Interpretation
1. A “Target Not Detected” result indicates there is no current CMV infection detected in the given sample .
If patient tested for viral load assessment, routine clinical follow -up as suggested by the treating
clinician.
2. CMV DNA detected “< 35 IU/mL” result indicates Low-level CMV viremia, may indicate previous
spontaneous or treatment-related resolution of CMV infection. Routine clinical follow-up as instructed by
the treating clinician is suggested.
3. The presence of CMV DNA viral load in the range “35 to 10000000 IU/mL” indicates an active infection in
the linear range of the test.
4. The detection of viral load “> 10000000 IU/mL” indicates presence of CMV viral load above upper limit of
quantification of the assay.
5. The presence of CMV DNA in a sample does not always imply active infection. The diagnosis of CMV
infection must be made using a combination of clinical suspicion, physical exam, and detection of the
virus.
6. The results of this report should be correlated clinically and interpreted in conjunction with the patient ’s
symptoms, history, and other diagnostic information.

Usage
This test is used in conjunction with other laboratory markers of disease for clinical management of CMV
