Questions 36 to 40: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions
36 to 40.
Light is one of the most intriguing and fundamental aspects of our universe. It is an
electromagnetic wave that travels in straight lines, at an astonishing speed of
approximately 299,792,458 meters per second in a vacuum. When light interacts with
different materials, it can exhibit a variety of fascinating behaviors.
Light can be reflected, which means it bounces off a surface, like a mirror, preserving
its angle of incidence. For example, when you see your reflection in a mirror, it's due to
light reflecting off the mirror's surface.
NLSO/2023/Class 7/NTC
8
Light can also be refracted, which is the bending of light as it passes from one medium
to another. This is why a straw in a glass of water appears bent at the surface of the
liquid. The speed of light changes as it moves from air to water, causing the bending.
Furthermore, light can be absorbed, where it's taken in by an object, converting the
energy into heat. This is why dark-colored objects get warmer when exposed to
sunlight.
Understanding these behaviors of light is not only fascinating but also essential in
various scientific applications and our daily lives.
[A] 100,000 meters per second [B] 500,000 meters per second
[C] 1,000,000 meters per second [D] 299,792,458 meters per second
38 A scientist is developing a new type of optical fiber for use in data transmission. The
fiber must efficiently transmit light signals over long distances. Which property of light
mentioned in the passage is most relevant to this scientist's work?
[A] Reflection [B] Refraction [C] Dispersion [D] Absorption
40 In the field of architecture, architects often use principles of light behavior to design
energy-efficient buildings. How can the knowledge of light's behavior, as discussed in
the passage, be applied in the design of energy-efficient buildings?
[A] By designing spaces to optimize natural lighting and minimize heat gain
[B] By maximizing light absorption in all materials

Questions 14 to 17: Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.
Almost all living things need oxygen. They use this oxygen during the process of creating
energy in living cells. Just as water moves from the sky to the earth and back in the
hydrological cycle, oxygen is also cycled through the environment. The cycle that maintains
the level of oxygen in the atmosphere is called oxygen cycle. The oxygen in the atmosphere is
used up in three processes, namely respiration, combustion and in the formation of oxides of
nitrogen. Oxygen is returned to the atmosphere in only one major process, photosynthesis.
Plants mark the beginning of the oxygen cycle. Plants convert carbon dioxide and water into
carbohydrates and oxygen by using the energy of sunlight in a process called photosynthesis.
Animals form the other half of the oxygen cycle. The animals take in oxygen which they use
to break down carbohydrates to release energy in a process called respiration. The carbon
dioxide produced during respiration is breathed out by animals into the air. So oxygen is
created in plants during photosynthesis and used up by animals in respiration.
But the oxygen cycle is not actually quite that simple. Plants must break carbohydrates down
to release energy to carry out their life processes as animals do. During the day, plants hold
onto a bit of the oxygen which they produced in photosynthesis and use that oxygen to break
down carbohydrates. But in order to maintain their metabolism and continue respiration at
night, the plants absorb oxygen from the air and give off carbon dioxide as animals do.
