QUESTION 1: READING FOR MEANING AND UNDERSTANDING

Read the passage below and answer the following set questions.

TEXT A

Why parents and teenagers do not understand one another

Hamilton Spectator

1. Parents and teenagers don’t understand one another because of age

differences, unfamiliar teenage activities and the high expectations
parents have of their teenage children. Many parents and teenagers
don’t understand one another because of age differences. Being a
teenage is the stage to have fun. This is seen 5
when a high school student enjoys socialising with their friends,
especially going to a party. Parents have a lot of responsibility
raising their children such as providing them with food, clothing,
shelter, and an education. Therefore, parents are usually serious
and stern because of this great responsibility. 10

2. Teenagers do not understand why their parents cannot be more laid

back and parents cannot understand how their children can
be so care free. At times, this tends to lead to conflict between
teenagers and their parents. Conflict happens when two people
disagree based on their own goals, values, or beliefs. Parents and 15
teenagers inherently have many opportunities to have conflict.
Adolescence is a time when independence and parental influence
conflict. Conflict is as simple as an argument. Conflict is what
happened right before the argument. That's what two people
disagreed about before they started calling each other names. 20

3. The ability for an adolescent to be able to think on his own and yet
have parents who have rules and expectations sets the pair of for
conflict. Teenagers don't necessarily hold the same beliefs and
values as their parents, and their goal to have fun conflicts with the
parents’ goal to keep them safe. 25

2
English Home Language P1 Grade 10 June 2018

4. Other reasons why parents do not understand their teenagers

because of teenage activities. Teenagers are the people who are
experimenting with many things such as drug use, cell phone use,
noise, boyfriend/ girlfriend, type of music, church/religion, grades,
chores, messy room, disrespectful behaviour, curfews, dishonesty, 30
allowance, fairness, clothes, body piercings, tattoos, hairstyles, diet,
how to spend money, getting a ride to places, taking care of a pet,
what to eat, getting out of bed, using electricity/hot water, smoking,
allowance, and displays of affection.

5. Many parents are aware of these things and that’s the reason why 35
they are over-protective of their young teenage children. Parents
feel they should guide their young children in the right direction, but
teenagers want their independence, so they do not understand one
another’s desires.

6. Expectations of parents is another reason why parents and teens 40

don’t understand one another. Parents want their children to go to
college or university and to have a good job someday. Some
young teenagers are not serious about their studies and this is the
reason why parents are getting mad at them. Education is the only
opportunity to achieve success. Because of this, parents are 45
always telling their children that they need to study hard because
education is the only key to success and teenagers resist their
parent’s advice.

7. Teenagers should listen and follow their parents’ advice so that they
receive good direction in their lives and parents should 50
listen to what their teens have to say about their own lives.

QUESTION 2: SUMMARISING IN YOUR OWN WORDS

Text C provides insight into how to build self-confidence. Summarise, in your own words, the
key points of how one can build their own self confidence.

Note:

• Your summary should include SEVEN points and NOT exceed 90 words.
• You must write a fluent paragraph.
• You are not required to include a title for the summary.
• Indicate your word count at the end of your summary.

TEXT C

How to Build Self Confidence

Self-confidence is an essential part of humanity. A person with self-confidence
generally likes themselves, is willing to take risks to achieve their personal and
professional goals, and thinks positively about the future. Someone who lacks
self-confidence, however, is less likely to feel that they can achieve their goals,
and tends to have a negative perspective about themselves and what they hope
to gain in life. The good news is that self-confidence is something you can
improve! Building self-confidence requires you to cultivate a positive attitude
about yourself.

You should learn to set goals and take risks, as well, since meeting challenges
can further improve your self-confidence. There are many ways in which one
can improve their self-confidence. In order to improve one’s self-confidence,
one needs to identify negative thoughts, as your negative thoughts might hold
you back from achieving your goals. One also needs to turn ones negative
thoughts to positive thoughts, being doing this; you are giving yourself some
much needed positive affirmation.

You need to refuse to focus on negative thoughts more often than positive
thoughts. In life, you need to maintain a positive support network, by connecting
with those close to you; you are able to remain uplifted. We are all talented and
it is important to identify with your talents as this will help you identify what you
are good at. The smallest thing that people tend to overlook, is taking pride in
themselves, by doing this, your identify more with yourself and develop a great
personality. One also needs to learn to accept compliments, hence it is important
to accept them gracefully. Learn to love yourself, love what you see in the mirror,
look in the mirror and smile. [www.wikihow.com]

questions set.

TEXT F

BOOST YOUR SELF-CONFIDENCE

Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight,

or any experience that reveals the human spirit. – E.E. Cummings

One of the things that held me back from persuing my dreams for many years
was fear of failing … and the lack of self-confidence that I needed to overcome
that fear. It’s something we all face, to some degree, I think. The key question:
how do you overcome that fear? By working on your self-confidence and self-
esteem. Without really thinking of it in those terms, that’s what I’ve been doing 5
over the years, and that’s what helped me finally overcome my fears, and finally
pursue my dreams. I still have those fears, undoubtedly.

But now I know that I can beat them, that I can break through that wall of fear
and come out on the other side. I’ve done it many times now, and that success
will fuel further success. This post was inspired by reader Nick from Finland, 10
who asked for an article about self-worth and self-confidence: Many of the
things you propose make people feel better about themselves and actually
help building self-confidence. However, I would be interested on reading your
input in general on this topic. Taking time out for your own plans and dreams,
doing things another way than most other peoples and generally not necessarily 15
“fitting in” can be quite hard with a low self-confidence.

Truer words have never been spoken. It’s near impossible to make time for
your dreams to break free from the traditional mold to truly be yourself if you
have low self-esteem and self-confidence As an aside, I know that some people
make a strong distinction between self-esteem and self-confidence. In this
article use them interchangeably, even if there is a subtle but perhaps 20
important difference … the difference being whether you believe you’re worthy
of respect from others (self-esteem) and whether you believe in yourself (self-
confidence)
