Ang Mga Utos ng Fraile (Parody ng “The Ten Commandments“)


Ang manga utos nang Fraile ay sampo: Ang nauna: Sambahin mo ang Fraile na lalo
sa lahat. Ang ikalaua: Huag kang mag papahamak manuba nang ngalang deretsos.
Ang ikatlo: Mangilin ka sa Fraile lingo man at fiesta. Ang ikapat: Isangla mo ang
catauan mo sa pagpapalibing sa ama’t ina Ang ikalima: Huag kang mamamatay kung
uala pang salaping pang libing Ang ikanim: Huag kang makiapid sa kanyang asaua.
Ang ikapito: Huag kang makinakaw. Ang ikaualo: Huag mo silang pagbibintangan,
kahit ka masinungalingan. Ang ikasiyam: Huag mong ipagkait ang iyong asaua. Ang
ikapulo: Huag mong itangui ang iyong ari. Itong sampong utos nang Fraile’I dalaua
ang kinaoouian. Ang isa: Sambahin mo ang Fraile lalo sa lahat. Ang ikalaua: Ihayin
mo naman sa kaniya ang puri mo’t kayamanan. Siya naua.

"Ang Mga Utos ng Fraile" is a satirical piece that mocks the Ten
Commandments of the Christian faith. It portrays the control and exploitation
imposed by the friars (Fraile) during the Spanish colonial period in the
Philippines. The piece uses humor and irony to criticize the abusive power and
hypocrisy of the clergy. Essentially, "Ang Mga Utos ng Fraile" serves as a harsh
critique of the abuse of religious power and the manipulation of faith for
personal gain during the Spanish colonization of the Philippines. The satire
reveals the oppressive and exploitative nature of the friars, highlighting the

• If you were a reader of this work during the Spanish period, what do you think
will be your reaction to this work? Explain why.
After I wer to read the, "Ang Mga Utos ng Fraile" during the Spanish
period, I believe it would be an eye-opening experience. Although it might
initially shock me due to the boldness of the parody, it could help me view
religious teachings and authority figures in a different light. The clever
reimagining of the Ten Commandments and the satirical elements could also
be a source of amusement and might even help me connect with like-minded
individuals. However, the subversive nature of the content might also make me
feel uneasy or fearful. Nonetheless, I believe this could be a constructive
experience that encourages critical thinking and could lead to positive change.
• How important is this work to Philippine history and the formation of the
Filipino nationalism? Explain.

The use of parody played a crucial role in shaping Filipino nationalism


by uniting Filipinos against foreign domination and promoting a sense of
shared identity. By employing humor and satire as tools of cultural resistance,
Filipinos were able to challenge the colonizers' hegemony and engage in
discussions and gatherings that fostered critical thinking and solidarity. This
contributed to the development of Filipino nationalism, empowering
individuals to take a stand against colonial exploitation and promoting a
constructive sense of identity rooted in resistance against foreign rule.
