Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU) stands as a beacon of excellence in medical
education, imparting knowledge and shaping the future of
healthcare professionals in the heart of Pakistan.
Established with a commitment to advancing medical
science and providing top-tier education, RMU has
emerged as a distinguished institution known for its
unwavering dedication to academic brilliance, cutting-
edge research, and community service.
Situated in the historic city of Rawalpindi, the university serves as a hub for aspiring
doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals, drawing upon a rich legacy in the field
of medicine. RMU embraces a holistic approach to education, emphasizing not only
academic rigor but also the cultivation of empathy, ethics, and a profound sense of
responsibility in its students.
At the core of RMU's mission is the preparation of future healthcare leaders who are

Rawalpindi Medical University evolved in 2017 from Rawalpindi Medical College
which was established in 1974 and was one of the most renowned medical colleges
not only in the Punjab but across the country as well. The Rawalpindi Medical
University is actively involved in undergraduate teaching of MBBS students, as well
as the training and clinical teaching of M.Phil, M.S, M.D, FCPS & MCPS post-
graduate trainees in various disciplines. The university also offers three Ph.D
programs at the moments. Apart from that, the university is also providing teaching
facilities to nursing and Allied Health Sciences students by virtue of its large, well-
qualified & experienced faculty, and the attached hospitals for hands-on training of
clinical sciences.

Till date over 10718 students have graduated from the institution including over 600
foreign nationals from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait,
Libya, Malaysia, Nepal, Palestine,
Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sudan,
Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Dutch
and Indian Occupied Kashmir.
There are over 1600 Rawalians
working in UK, USA, Australia,
Canada, South Africa, Gulf and
Far eastern countries.
The RMU also has the honor of
coming 2nd in the merit order
among all the public sector
medical teaching institutions of
the province of Punjab for Medical
College admissions in 2022, an
evidence of building trust of the
aspiring students and their

University Campuses
The RMU has two purpose built spacious campuses in Rawalpindi catering to the
needs of its students. The main campus is located at Tipu Road Rawalpindi, and
hosts the university secretariat apart from being the hosting numerous facilities for
academic and physical development of our students.
The 2nd campus is situated at Holy Family Hospital, facilitating the students in the
clinical training.

Affiliated Hospitals
The university has three well-equipped hospitals attached with it including the Holy
Family Hospital, Benazir Bhutto Hospital and District Headquarters Hospital which
offer hands-on clinical teaching to the students as well as provision of some of the
state-of-the-art treatment and diagnostic facilities to the public thus helping in
alleviating sufferings of the community.
With total bed strength of around 2110, the hospitals are helping to prepare
professionals equipped to deliver the highest quality of health care services.
Rawalpindi Medical University has produced some of the country’s best medical
graduates who have earned a name around the globe, not only for themselves but
for their alma mater as well.

The Rawalpindi Medical University stresses on ensuring the quality of its programs
as per the national and international standards, provided by different accreditation
bodies. The residency programs of the university are tailored to meet all the
requirements of the primary medical accreditation body of Pakistan i.e. Pakistan
Medical & Dental Council. The Pakistan Medical & Dental Council conducted an
inspection visit of the Rawalpindi Medical University in 2023 to evaluate and
recognize new residency programs introduced by the university.

Curriculum Reforms
Curriculum reforms in a medical university are imperative to align education with the
dynamic landscape of healthcare. Rapid advancements in medical science,

education. Curriculum reforms ensure graduates are

the quality of medical professionals. The Rawalpindi
Medical University uses a comprehensive Clinically Oriented Integrated Modular
Curriculum that has been developed by the university with consultation of national
and international subject experts.

The university has made a comprehensive infrastructure for the assessment of the
medical students at all levels ensuring that the health professionals of the future are

equipped with the required competencies and skills to perform at their best in all
scenarios across the globe. The structured assessment model of the university is
called Mumtahin and it is tailored especially as per the requirements of the curriculum
to evaluate the students in all domains of learning.

Internal Assessment of the students.

project was issued by the HEC vide letter No DP -1232-002 dated July 27,2021.

Faculty Enhancement & Development
The importance of a qualified faculty in a medical university cannot be overstated, as

13th Convocation of Rawalpindi Medical University
The 13th convocation of Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU) was held here on
Wednesday to confer degrees on MBBS graduates of the session 2016 and 2017.
Governor Punjab Muhammad Baligh Ur Rehman was the chief guest at the occasion
that was attended by

Students’ Annual Week
Rawalpindi Medical University's Sports Week is an exhilarating annual event that
transcends the boundaries of academia, bringing together students, faculty, and staff
in a celebration of athleticism, teamwork, and camaraderie. This vibrant week serves
as a dynamic platform for fostering a sense of unity and promoting a healthy lifestyle
among the RMU community.
The Sports Week kicks off with an electrifying opening ceremony, marked by the
lighting of the torch and the resounding cheers of participants and spectators alike.
The event encompasses a wide array of sports, ranging from traditional favorites like
cricket, football, and basketball to niche competitions such as table tennis,
badminton, and athletics. The diversity of sports ensures that there is something for

Journal of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences
The Allied Health Sciences and Nursing are the backbone of patientcare and health
delivery system of Rawalpindi Medical University and Allied Hospitals. The Vice
Chancellor of the Rawalpindi Medical University, in lines with
the RMU’s vision of inculcating research and innovation at all
levels has always supported and encouraged the research
endeavors of the nursing and allied health sciences. A proof of
these efforts is the development of a separate journal for
Nursing and Allied Health Sciences under the flag of
Rawalpindi Medical University which is unique of its kind and
speaks volume of the flourishing research culture in our
competent Nurses and other Allied Health Professionals. The
journals are managed by a learned editorial board consisting of
qualified professionals from within the university and other
national institutions, including Physicians, Allied Health Professionals and Nurses.
The journal is a matter of pride for the university due to the quality work published in
it. Till now, four volumes of the journal have been published.

University Budget
Financial stability is paramount for a medical university to maintain its educational
excellence and advance in the ever-evolving field of healthcare. Adequate funding
ensures state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge research opportunities, and top-tier
faculty recruitment. Diverse revenue streams, including tuition, grants, and strategic
partnerships, contribute to financial resilience. Prudent financial management,
budget transparency, and cost-effective operations are integral for sustainability.
Endowments and fundraising initiatives further fortify the institution's fiscal health,
supporting scholarships, research endeavors, and infrastructure development.
Financial stability not only guarantees the university's viability but also safeguards its
mission to produce competent healthcare professionals and contribute significantly
to medical research and community health.
The financial budget for the university is primarily derived from 2 sources including
the Government of Punjab and university’s own receipts. The budget is utilized for
different development schemes necessary for improving teaching and learning
environment of the university.

The endowment fund is managed through provision of donations by the alumni of the
Rawalpindi Medical University.
Scholarships
Providing financial scholarships to medical students is pivotal for fostering

incurs substantial costs, and scholarships alleviate the financial burden, ensuring that
deserving and talented individuals can pursue their dream of becoming healthcare
professionals regardless of economic constraints. Scholarships enhance social
equity, promoting inclusivity by attracting students from diverse socioeconomic
backgrounds. By investing in the education of aspiring doctors, these scholarships
contribute to the development of a skilled and representative healthcare workforce.
Ultimately, financial support for medical students is an investment in the future of
healthcare, facilitating the emergence of well-trained, compassionate professionals
who can address global health challenges effectively.
The Rawalpindi Medical University believes in providing financial independence to
the students in need of financial support so that they can dedicate their energies

towards their professional development. The university disbursed scholarships
amounting to Rs. 1,85,35,670/- to the medical students during financial year 2022-
23. This amount is contributed largely by the university from its own resources and
always helpful alumni contributing to the further development of medical education in

Rawalpindi Medical University is

university of Pakistan. Working
with the aim of reducing the
distances in the global village,
RMU has partnered with a
number of reputable international
institutions to enhance the
learning experience for its
students. The Emergency
Medicine Foundation Program
(EMFP) is one such example of
these efforts which is being conducted at RMU in collaboration with the Royal College
of Emergency Medicine. In connection with the program, the recent visit of the
President of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM), UK, is an
acknowledgement of the contribution of Rawalpindi Medical University in enhancing
the emergency care provision to public.
The Rawalpindi Medical University has till date signed 21 MOUs with different
international partners. During 2022, following international MOU’s were signed.

Establishment of APPNA Regional Office at RMU
Earlier this year, the importance and contributions of the Rawalpindi Medical
University in bringing together the Pakistani Health Professional of overseas were
recognized by the APPNA and a regional facilitation center was established for
APPNA at Rawalpindi Medical University to serve as a hub for liaison between
Pakistani medical community and the APPNA community. The office was inaugurated
by President APPNA Dr. Arshad Rehan on 18th May 2023.

Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU) is actively committed to community service,
recognizing the integral role that healthcare institutions play in promoting the well-
being of society. The university engages in a range of initiatives that demonstrate its
dedication to community welfare. The Rawalpindi Medical University understands its
responsibility towards the nation and the RMU’s community outreach program is
evidence of this social responsibility that is present in the hearts of all the Rawalians.
The faculty, students and alumni of the Rawalpindi Medical University are always at
the forefront whenever the nation is in need. May it be the COVID19 outbreak or the
devastation of the recent floods, the RMU responded with all its zeal to help the
nation. Even in the times of calm, the RMU in accordance with its Hub & Spoke
model, through its faculty, students and alumni is extending quality medical services
and expertise to neighboring underdeveloped regions.
Free Medical Camps: RMU often organizes and participates in free medical

In the wake of devastating floods of 2022, all members of the Rawalpindi Medical
University responded with full strength to
provide relief to the countrymen in the flood
affected areas. The teams of Rawalpindi
Medical University were among the first
responders to start the relief operations,
even when the affected areas were not
easily approachable. Our relief operations
spanned from KPK to the far-flung areas of
Balochistan, providing medical cover as
well as rehabilitation services in the areas.
During the 2022 flood that drastically
affected a large part of Pakistan, the
medical and humanitarian relief teams of
the Rwalpindi Medical University made
their mark by being among the first
responders to provide relief to the victims.

Putting Patient First
The Rawalpindi Medical University has four attached hospitals providing round the
clock patient care to the community. The dedicated
team of health professionals of these hospitals,
including the faculty of the Rawalpindi Medical
University ensures that the uninterrupted medical
services are always available for all without any
discretion of financial or social status. For the very
purpose the university has implemented “Putting
Patients First” program, to raise the healthcare
delivery standards for the community. The core

Upgradation of Hospitals
To enhance the patient care facilities for the patients, extensive renovation work has
been started in the Allied Hospitals including Rawalpindi Teaching Hospital, Benazir
Bhutto Hospital and Holy Family Hospital during 2023. The hallmark of the renovation
project is the revamping project of the Holy Family Hospital, part of which was built
decades ago during the rule of the British Empire on the subcontinent, consisting of
around 618448 Sq. feet along with upgradation of facilities in the hospital.
