Shields Road is home to a multiplicity of cultures, histories, materials and sounds. The
CreateSpace queer design initiative attempts to provide the basis for diverse communi-
ties to come together under the same roof, celebrating their differences and enriching
social mobility regardless of income, race, gender or sexuality.
After first visiting the site on a bike, I felt alienated from the street and was even
warned to not lock my bike in certain places. The fantastic irony of this is that two of
Newcastles ‘best’ bike shops sit on Shields Road, and dont even provide their own bike
parking outside - I have found that moving through a city in different ways is often a
reflection of identity.
Further site analysis revealed the lacking of greenspaces, Newcastle East have created
a survey for locals to discuss their reflections on the surroundings and almost all re-
sponses yearn for a community feel, the return of the walkable neighbourhood and busy,
bustling markets. Locals want spaces to sit and enjoy their surroundings, provisions for
children to feel safe and to feel safe at night - all things I believe should be the ab-
solute baseline of design.
The CreateSpace co-housing project aims to create provision for such changes to begin
their implementation along Shields road, recognising that there is no single way for all
demands to be met instantly, but using an inclusive design standard to create inspira-
tion for community projects in years to come.
Each unit begins as a blank canvas, stakeholders are given the opportunity to express
themselves however they see fit. Through providing that which is neccessary, Mabel’s
love of high heels, or Sadiq’s miniature ant circus all have a place under the light-
weight CLT structure. Furthermore, a steel-frame wintergarten hung onto the facade, pro-
vides a space full of daylight all throughout the year, to maximise the natural light
brought into the deepset building.
The ground floor’s pay as you feel cafe, BrakeSpace, and community bike repair zone,
ToolSpace, aim to re-ignite the once bustling market feel of Shields Road, bursting its
tables and chairs out on to the pavement at every opportunity. Residents are able to
take advantage of the kitchen and convert the ground floor space into whatever they may
desire: space for a banquet, a drag show or perhaps a night of standup comedy.
