Acid-base reaction experiment

Student name: Iman Itani

Date of performance: not mentioned
 Purpose: determine the unknown concentration of KHP using
NaOH solution
 Theory: During a TITRATION increments of a reagent solution of
known concentration (titrant) are added to the solution of unknown
concentration (analyte) until their reaction is complete (equivalence
point). The titration is carried out to determine the concentration of
the analyte as accurately as possible.
 Chemicals used:
Sodium hydroxide NaOH
Potassium hydrogen phthalate
Distilled water
Phenolphthalein
KHP
 Glassware used:
Weigh boat
Spatula
Analytic balance
Volumetric flask of 100.00 mL
Burette
Pipette of 10.00 mL with pulp
Beakers
Erlenmeyer flask or titration flask
Funnels
Plastic droppers
Heating plate
Magnetic stirrer bar

 Reactions involved in the experiment:

1-Prepare standard KHP solution
2- Titrate NaOH against the standard KHP
3- Standardization of NaOH
 Procedures:
Reaction1:
Measure potassium hydrogen phthalate (2.0000 g)
Write down exact weight and transfer to a volumetric flask (100.0 mL)
Fill half with distilled water
Mix until dissolved
Fill until mark and homogenize by swirling upside-down several times
Calculate concentration
Reaction2:
Pipet 10.00 mL KHP into an Erlenmeyer flask
Add 2 drops of phenolphthalein.
Before or during the titration, you can wash the walls of the flask with distilled water
Titrate using NaOH (swirl during addition) until slightly pink.
Repeat twice more.
Calculate the average volume.
Calculate the concentration of NaOH from this average volume
Reaction 3:
Take 100.0 mL solution of unknown concentration of KHP.
Take 10.00 ± 0.02 mL of this solution together with 3 drops of indicator
Titrate to a light pink.
Repeat twice more.
Calculate the average volume and the concentration of the unknown KHP solution

 Table of data and results:

Reaction1:
item VALUE
Mass of KHP 2.0308 g
n(KHP) 9.7928 x 10^-3mol
V(solution) 100.0ml
Concentration 0.1087 mol/L

Reaction2:
Trial V of NaOH
1 10.3 mL
2 10.1 mL
3 10.1 mL

The average volume = 10.61 mL

The concentration = 0.1024 mol/L
Reaction 3:
The Trial V of NaOH
1 5.2 mL
2 5.2mL
3 5.2 ml
average volume of NaOH = 5.20 ml
The concentration = 0.0532 mol/L

 Method of calculation:
Reaction1:
N (KHP) =Mass of KHP / M.w. of KHP = 2g / 204.23 g/mol = 9.7928 x 10^-3 mol

Concentration = N (KHP)/V(solution) = 9.7928*10^-3 mol/100*10^-3 L=0.1087 mol/L

Reaction2:
The average volume = (10.30+10.10+10.10)/3 = 10.61 mL
CNaOH *Vave=CKHP*VKHP
C NaOH = 0.1087 * 10.00 /10.61 = 0.1024 mol/L

Reaction 3:
The average volume = (5.2+5.2+5.2)/3 = 5.20 mL
C*VKHP=C (Part II)* NaOH V
C KHP = 0.1024 * 5.20 /10.00 = 0.0532 mol/L

The mass calculation:

N (kHP) = c *v = 0.0532 * 100*10^-3= 5.3248 x 10^-3 mol
Masse = N (kHP) * M.w. = 5.3248 x 10^-3 * 204.23 = 1.0874 g
 Sources of errors:
Volumetric flask of 100.00 ml
Burette
Pipette of 10.00 mL
