DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
Linear Algebra(MA6204E) - Tutorial Sheet 9

1. Let V be the space C2 , with the standard inner product. Let T be the linear operator
defined by T e1 = (1, −2), T e2 = (i, −1). If x = (x1 , x2 ), find T ∗ v.

2. Let V be a finite dimensional inner product space and T a linear operator on V . Show
that the range of T ∗ is the orthogonal complement of the null space of T .

3. Let V be the vector space of the polynomials over R of degree less than or equal to 3,
with the inner product Z 1
hf, gi = f (t)g(t) dt.
0

If t is a real number, find the polynomial gt in V such that hf, gt i = f (t) for all f ∈ V .

4. Give an example of unitary matrix which is not orthogonal, and give an example of an
orthogonal matrix which is not unitary.

5. Let V = R3 , with standard inner product. Let W be the plane spanned by u = (1, 1, 1)
and v = (1, 1, −2). Let U be the linear operator defined, geometrically, as follows:
U is rotation through the angle θ, about the straight line through the origin which is
orthogonal to W . There are actually two such rotations – choose one. Find the matrix
of U in the standard ordered basis.

6. Give an example of a 2 × 2 matrix A such that A2 is normal but A is not normal.
