Authentic Assessment of Learning

Lesson Proper:

The definition of authentic assessment is tests that use performance tasks that involve
real-world problem solving that allow learners to demonstrate their skills by applying them to
the task. In the real world, in the sense that there is an actual application of the skills learned
from a lesson and there is a real area or a real situation where they can use the skills that they
have acquired, there is no opportunity to exercise the skills in a real-world situation. An
example of this is demo teaching, where we demonstrate how to act as teachers or apply what
we learn.

Five important components of authentic assessment involve the characteristics vital

for authentic evaluation in a learning environment. The five components are: real-world
problems, complexity, ambiguous answers, actionable, and meaningful.

There are three related terms for us to understand the authentic assessment. These are
performance-based, alternative, and direct. All authentic assessments are performance-based

assessments, but not all performance-based assessments are authentic assessments. There are
two types of performance-based activities: process-oriented performance-based assessments

and product-oriented performance-based activities. On the other hand, alternative

assessments are an alternative to traditional assessments. Lastly, direct assessments provide
more direct evidence of meaningful application of skills and knowledge. Direct evidence of
what the student is learning or what the student has learned in the learning process.

Types of Authentic Assessment

 Communication activities

 Creative products

 Problems, games, and simulations

 Portfolios

Characteristics of Authentic Assessment

 Tasks should represent real-world performance.

 Emphasis on teaching and learning criteria for assessment.
 Significant role for self-assessment.
 Public presentation and defense of work when possible.
 Timely feedback and peer assessment.
 Development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
 Clear evidence of learning.
 Interdisciplinary approach.
 Student perceptions of authenticity are subjective

2
 Authentic tasks are similar to the real work done in professional contexts and
highlights situational and contextual knowledge including acquisition of relevant
professional attitudes and competencies

Essence of Authentic Assessment

 Focuses on what students know.

 Requires students to develop responses rather than select from predetermined options.
 Evaluates holistic projects directly.
 Collects samples of student work over time.
 Based on clear criteria known to students and parents.
 Elicits higher-order thinking.
 Allows multiple human judgments.
 Closely relates to classroom learning.
 Teaches students self-evaluation.
 Considers differences in learning styles, language proficiencies, cultural and
educational backgrounds, and grade level.

Traditional Assessment refer to conventional methods of testing, usually standardized

and involving pen and paper with multiple-choice, true or false, or matching type test
items.

Advantages of Traditional Assessment

3
 Easy to score.

 Less time-consuming and easier to prepare.

 Objective, reliable, and valid.

 Economical.

Disadvantages of Traditional Assessment

 Provides a one-time snapshot of student learning.

 Limited options for students to demonstrate learning.

 Separates assessment from instruction.

 Enhances only low-level cognitive skills (knowledge and comprehension).

 Involves students working alone.

 Focuses on one form of intelligence.
