3D Drawing and modelling using SolidWorks.
Objectives:
Software Used:
Usually Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) software uses engineering drawings like AutoCAD
and Fusion 360 but we have used SolidWorks which is the most used software in the industry
these days.
Commands Used:
1) Line Command: It was used to create all construction and solid lines in the sketch.
2) Arc Command: It was just used to form the tangent arcs of radii of 10mm and 15mm.
3) Circle Command: It was used to form all circles within the sketch.
4) Horizontal and vertical relations: They were used to make the fully defined.
5) Smart Dimension: It is a feature used to dimension any specific sketch and also helps in
fully defining the sketch.
6) Extrude Boss/Base: This feature creates a 3D solid by extending a 2D sketch along a linear
path. It's used to add material to a part, building basic shapes like blocks or cylinders.
7) Extrude Cut: This feature removes material from a 3D model by extending a 2D sketch
into the part, cutting through it. It's used for creating holes, slots, or complex cut-outs.
8) Revolve Boss/Base: This feature generates a 3D shape by revolving a 2D sketch around a
central axis. It's commonly used for creating circular parts like wheels or cones.
Sketch:
In this lab, we utilized SolidWorks to create a 3D model by applying fundamental features such as
Extrude Boss/Base, Extrude Cut and Revolve. The process began with sketching 2D profiles on
designated planes, followed by using Extrude Boss/Base to generate basic 3D geometry. The
Extrude Cut feature allowed us to remove material and create intricate designs such as holes or
cutouts. Additionally, the Revolve function was employed to form symmetrical shapes through
rotational profiles. This exercise enhanced our understanding of parametric modeling and
demonstrated how simple sketches can evolve into complex solid models, vital for product design
and engineering.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the SolidWorks 3D modeling lab provided hands-on experience with essential CAD
tools used for creating complex geometries from basic sketches. By mastering 3D features , we
developed the ability to efficiently build and modify 3D models. These skills are critical in
engineering design, allowing for rapid prototyping and visualization of parts. Overall, this exercise
reinforced the importance of precise sketching and feature selection in the modeling process,
laying a strong foundation for more advanced CAD applications in future projects.
