In Madina is the grave of the prophet, which visited by angels


It is such grave there is excellence in empyrean and in the sky

Is there any relation between desert of Madina and the gardens?


With the lovely air of Madina it is envious of garden of
paradise.

If Madina City is safe, then everything is safe,


So Allah keeps it as the cause of the blessing.

Madina is such a garden city which is décor of the gardens.


The seasons of the gardens of paradise are due to the Madina

While leaving Madina, so no need to visit the garden of paradise.


As it is better than paradise and it is a living paradise on the earth

Not we, but Allah also loves the city of Madina.


The love of Madina is like the love of the prophet.

The beggar of this door is the king of fate and worlds.


The beggar of this place is a matter of envy for the kings.

One who has become rich there so his fate could not understand
In the resurrection day prophet, Ibrahim will find the help there.

Oh Allah help us to reach Madina City to see how it is there?


Where is the mercy, and there is available blessing everywhere?

If one leaves Madina, then he will not find such fragrance


If there is a love of Madina, then it is guaranteed of heaven.

On the earth, he is called Mohammed, and Ahmed in the skies


His praise is in the world, and also his praise is found in the
skies.

There is his rule in Madina; also, he is a ruler of the skies.


Madina is the capital, and he is the ruler of the two worlds.

Preface

The book "Hayat Sufi Sarmad " is very old and was
published in Urdu by Moulana Abul Kalam Azad and
translated into English for the first time by me.
He published this book in the Urdu language in the
year 1910. Please note that it is a biography of Hayat Sufi
Sarmad in the Urdu language. It is a very hard task as
Hazrat was not only a great pious personality of his time
in the area of Delhi, India, but he was also a great Sufi
person of his time.
So, in brief, he was the highest cadre of the holy saints
of his time in India. For a long time, he was engaged in
religious discourses, sermons, and spiritual training of the
people, and he also did many great endeavours for the
preaching and propagation work of Islam in the area of
Delhi, India, and around this region, and there was no
such personality during his time.
He was the spiritual master of Emperor Aurangzeb's
brother, Prince Dar Shikwa, and other Mughal court
nobles who followed him and carried out his teaching and
preaching mission in India.
The positive information and great details about this Sufi
saint who arrived in North India from Central Asia will
pique the readers' interest in reading this book.

This is a small book in which a biography of Hazrat


Sufi Sarmad Shaheed is added, and in this book, there are
some great achievements of this great Sheikh from Delhi,
India, which are not yet known to the general public, and
other persons are

published in a very interesting style, so, for this reason,


the readers will find great interest and attention in this
matter.

If the readers begin reading this book's first chapter and


do not stop until they reach its final chapter, they will
learn about some interesting events as well as other great
miracles and endeavours of the holy saint, and this holy
saint, who passed away from the world more than 750-
800 years ago, is also mentioned.

Re ‘Hyat Sufi Sarmad’ famous book of the translator


Mohammed Abdul Hafeez is added at the close of the book.
Sarmad Kashani, also known as Sarmad Shaheed, was a Persian
Sufi saint and martyr who was executed in 1661 or 1662:
*Background :Sarmad was born a Jew in Kashan, modern-day
Iran, around 1590. He became a trader and learned about Arabic
and Persian poetry and mystic traditions. He converted to Islam
before arriving in Thatta, modern-day Sindh, in 1632.
*Life :Sarmad was a crosser of cultural, religious, geographic. He
traveled from city to city, sharing Persian poetry, spiritual
teachings, and predictions of the future. He was also active at the
Mughal court in Delhi.
*Execution :Sarmad was executed on charges of public nudity or
blasphemy. The charges against him included:
 Nudity
 Blasphemy, including not completing the Islamic creed (kalima)
by adding “except Allah”

*Legacy :Sarmad is venerated as a Sufi martyr and a Sufi “Jewish


saint” of India. His tomb in Delhi is a place of pilgrimage.

This book is edited and formatted as per the great book of Sufism,
which is very famous in the Western world among English-
speaking persons. So, for this reason, there will be some small
differences in it when compared with the Hindi /Urdu books and its
literature.

The aim of this book is to present it in the Western world, where


there is great demand for and search for the books of Sufism and
the biographies of holy saints who lived and spent their entire lives
for the preaching and propagation of Islamic religion in all corners
of the world, as per the tradition and practice of Allah’s last
prophet.

The love's grief will be the same and equal every


where.Every lover, even though he will not be Qais, must
be Majnu (desperate in love) in this matter.
When love comes, it will tell wisdom and conscience to
vacate the place for me. The same thing happened to
Hazrat Sarmad.And wisdom and conscience prevailed
over his passion and madness, as well as all money,
effects, and commerce that were destroyed as a result.
And with the world's relation, there remained only the
shackle of the dress covering the body, and its weight was
later removed from his body.As prohibitions are there for
claimants of conscience,

The statement of facts from the Urdu book publisher

This memorable tragic event, the martyrdom of Hazrat


Sufi Sarmad, occurred in the year 1659, during the ruling
period of Emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir.
Moulana Azad began writing this bloody story in his
distinctive style at the request of Hasan Nizami in early
April of 1910.And the first part of it he sent to Calcutta in
the name of Khaja Hasan Nizami.And for the second part,
he was sent to Calcutta after a gap of two or three days.
But it was lost and could not be reached by Khaja Sahib.
And regarding this, Moulana Azad wrote to Wahidi Sahib
as follows:

Greetings
The article that was sent was insufficient. As stated
during the journey and during the illness period and
thought that it was sufficient, so it seemed good to send.
After three days, when there was time, I completed the
article and sent it to Khaja Sahib in Calcutta. It's
surprising that only the first part has been completed. So
if the second part is lost, there is no time, or is it that there
is not much importance to re-write the second part? I
think it is a waste of time. There is also the insistence of

Khwaja Sahib in this matter. Otherwise, there are


thousands of historical figures associated with ijtihad
(interpretation of Islamic law) and renewal who have
expressed confusion and carelessness in this regard.So, by
abandoning them, who will waste time writing about
Sarmad?

But there was sympathy for Moulana Azad because the


above story was incomplete.On June 3, 1910, Moulana
Azad from Calcutta wrote to Khaja Sahib as follows:
"If you say so, then I will complete the article about Sufi
Sarmad." When I returned from Bombay, I couldn't help
but think of Sufi Sarmad.I have had his Divan (the
collected odes of the single poet) with me during my
travels. There will be a flow of thought when it is
viewed.So if you say, then I will complete the article and
send it to you.

Moulana Azad has finished the article and has sent it for
the second time by July 9th, 1910.The first time it was
given the title of the publication. And, from that time until
now, it has been published numerous times with minor
flaws and has been praised by both general and
specialized experts in the field.Moulana Azad used to
enjoy playing the game of cross and prison.At the
beginning of the second decade of the twentieth century,
the events that happened in India and outside of India

have kept the memory of Maulana Azad alive. Moulana's


style and the preceding thought created such a condition,
which is known to

supports of hearts.Khaja Hasan Nizami did not say


wrongly that this is such a thesis on the positions of the
Darweshi that it is an intoxicated and playful speech.

Now we present this entire thesis in the service of men of


intelligence.

During the ruling period of Alamgir, many of the


biographies in the Persian language were written, but
among all of them generally, there will be little found
about the topic of Hazrat Sarmad Shaheed except for a
few lines. First, in the old biographies, the details are
found in a short style; for this reason, those details are not
sufficient. And if letters are sent to them

during their lifetime, there will not be enough


information about their address on the envelope.And
whatever resources are available, the problem is that they
are not in front of us.I have read Alamgir's history books
and, among other events and incidents, have checked in
this matter to see if there are any events.However, it is
clear that politically prudent people have put down their
pens.

Mirza Mohammed Kazim has started writing events and


biographies with year-wise details, but he has only written
events for a period of ten years. As per royal order, he has
stopped this writing work. After that, during the rule of
Shah Alam, credit for the completed work was given to
Nawab Enayat Allah. And from Mustaid Khan's
indication, who has written the details of the biographies
of the 40 years and has added details of the book's
beginning.

Dah Sala Majmua (a collection of 10 years) and was


given his book’s name as ‘Maser Alamgiri’. I have
checked the pages of the year 1070 Hegira, and this is the
year of the martyrdom of Sufi Sarmad.Not only were
details discovered, but the pages of history were
completely ignored.So that there is no disfigurement in
the margin of the book of history due to drops of blood on
the martyr's dress.During the same year, Shah Abbas
Thani and Hussain Pasha Rumi (the likely ruler of Hijaz)
sent ambassadors to India.Even after exceeding the page
limit, the details on their pages are full, but this does not

prevent them from proceeding. But these conditions have


some importance in this matter. Also strange in this
matter is that in the surrounding areas of Delh,in
somewhere, the boys were playing the game of king and
minister. And among there were as police chief and
criminal. The artificial police chief

in anger given real punishment to the artificial criminal.


Half a page about this great event and story was
reserved.When the historian looks like that, and among
the rush of such stories, how will the dead body of poor
person Sarmad be seen by them?.
Khafani’s book, ‘Muntab Bab’, is the famous history
book of Mughal rule in India. And in this book, there are
such detailed descriptions of the events of Alamgir that
this is the subject matter of the book. The assumption is
that he ignored the Sufi Sarmad event because of the pen
of Alamgir, which is not in his hand. And there was
uncertainty about his stopping at each step.When I opened
it, there was not a single word about Sarmad in the 1000-
page book of biographies. It is true that the world’s great
secret is the pen of the historian. Today, who can say that
in his chapter, how many knots were put in it?
The year of Sarmad's martyrdom coincides with the
Mughal army's military expedition towards Kuch, Bihar,
and Assam.As a result of these factors, the events of the
year focus on two dates in particular and spent in the
praise of these two events. There is no doubt about the
significance of Assam's conquest, but Mustaid Khan had
no idea that in the game center of the world, there are
such eyes that will not look negatively on Assam's
success and conquest.However, on the grief of defeat,
which will always shed blood,In which Alamgir took one
Majnu (a desperate person in love) of Laila of reality to
cross in the fight of reality..
In short, there are two books under consideration in this
matter, neither of which will provide confirmation of

Sarmad's tradition.And the first is Sher Khan Lodhi,


author of ‘Marat Al Khiyal,’ who writes events from
Alamgir's reign without citing any sources because he is a
biographer of the time and his book

of biographies of ‘Marital Khiyal’, which I have with


me. And the second person is Ali Quli Daghastani, who
was among the nobles of Mohammed Shah. And who has
collected poetry by Persian poets and named it ‘Riyadh
Al-Shura ‘with care and much attention. This book’s one
handwritten copy is available at the Asiatic Society of
Bengal’s library. And I have taken many of the events
from this book. It is a fact that it was written during the
reign of Mohammed Shah. And for the event of Sarmad,
there is only one source. And apart from this, in the books
of biographies, whatever is written is, in my mind, to
some or less extent relevant to this matter.
One handwritten diary is deposited in Asian society,
more or less, of the poet Sirjauddin who has of pleasing
manners and who lived during the reign of Alamgir Thani
where there are some events found here and there. In a
nutshell, a bouquet was created and some leaves and
petals were added.Because why should anyone go to the
mausoleum of a martyr of Sarmad with empty hands?

Religion and nationality of Sarmad: A Sarmad Kashani,


or simply Sarmad (ca 1590–1661), was a
Persian- speaking Armenian mystic and poet who
travelled from Iran to India and made the Indian
subcontinent his permanent home during the 17th century.
Originally Jewish, he may have renounced his religion to
adopt Islam.

Early life: Sarmad was born in Armenia around 1590 to


a family of Jewish Persian-speaking Armenian merchants.
Sarmad had an excellent command of Persian, which was
essential for his work

as a merchant, and composed most of his works in this


language. He produced a translation of the ‘Torah’ in
Persian. He studied under Mulla Sadra and Mir
Findiriski before migrating to the Mughal Empire as a
merchant.
Azad wrote that nobody clearly showed Sarmad‘s
religion and nationality, and the author of Marat Khiyal
says that he is from Frangistan (a western country).
However, other biographies attribute this to a family of
Jewish Persian-speaking Armenian merchants.Upon it,
Wala Daghistani adds more details, saying that his native
place is Kashan. However, this distinction is not so
significant.Because there was a large Armenian
population in old Iran,And, in general, some are
Christians and some are Jews.They now fully embrace
European culture.In obtaining modern knowledge and
technology, they are first, followed by the Iranian groups.
Except for religion, there was no difference between them
and Muslims a century ago.Some of them had gained so
much Islamic knowledge and culture that they were able
to attend Muslim educational meetings.So in the books of
biographies, there are details of the many poets who were
Armenians and Christians. Their poetry, however, is no
less eloquent than that of Iranian poets.So the Sarmad
could be Armenian and Jewish.And he may be a native of
Kashan. Being Armenian, people thought of him as a
Farangi. Due to the connection of the unknown person
with other countries, it may deceive, which is not strange.
When the sun shines, it will not see the garden and
orchard. So that he may his residence in its rays. His

favours are like the light's or the source's favours in that


they are universal.If the golden parapet of the royal palace
shines, then the golden colour of the dry leaves of trees in
the jungles will also shine.What I am saying

in this matter my aim is not to find the center of the solar


system. However, it is related to the sun of Islam, and
when the waves left this ocean, they destroyed the
distinction between body and blood.Nationals and
communities were flown away like trash, and when the
time came for saturation, the nobles of Quresh and the
general people of Abyssinia, the Makkah and Madina
valleys, as well as non-Arab and western countries,
arrived.King Ghassan Azar, Arabian Beduin, higher and
lower, near and far.And gathered all of them together for
equal favour. There was only ability and effect, both of
which were standard favor.And every nation and every
land that was obtained based on ability.Abu Jahal was
Qureshi, and he was near the treasure, but he was away
from it in his whole life. Bilal Habshi and Suhaib Rumi
were far away, but their shirts, which were stuffed with
money, revealed their wealth.The cloud of mercy will fall
in all places. But there is no such thing that each and
every land that will become a garden of tulips for this
reason.
This was such a generous and bountiful favor, and it was
the result that even Arabs, who were close to the origin
and source of the favor, discovered that there was nothing
special about it in this matter.New Muslim nations will
emerge from far-flung corners of the globe.And who has
become so perfect in every kind of knowledge and art? As
a result, Arabs have broken up their rows.See today's
translation of the books and biographical literature of
Hadith: "A Hadith" (Arabic: , pronounced "ha- deeth") is
the narration of an event from the life of Muhammad, the

prophet of Islam. In English, the word hadith is also used


as the plural word for a group of these narrations although
the plural in Arabic is a-HAA-deeth (narrators). The new
Muslim nations have left no knowledge or literature on
which they have no control

or dominion.Even Sufism and indigence, which


flourished in the religion's brook, perished.And its history
is not without the contributions of new Muslim converts
who have entered the fold of Islam.
As for Allah's love, it is also the favour and benefit of
Islam, which is so universal that there is no discrimination
based on genealogical background or nationality.When
there is charity in the month of Muharram (especially
when it is spontaneous), there will be a search for the
thirsty.And there will be no fall in the look of the yellow
roll of dyed yarn and silky quilted coat and source of the
spring of favour from Allah, which will search for the
thirsty. The geneology, nationality, color, and family
background are not required.
The biography of the Sufi saint Sarmad is the most
important example of this general favour and
generosity.He was from an Armenian family in Iran.As
per religion, he was a Jew or a Christian. And there was a
choice for Allah's favour at the start of his life.And
because of his attraction to the advice of absorption, he
embraced the Islamic religion.
Genealogical name: There is not known genealogical
name, and it is not known under which name he was
adopted upon acceptance of the Islamic religion. His
name is generally mentioned in biographies under the title
Sarmad.It is a reality that Sarmad has become the
nameless person, and that is the surprising thing in this
matter. Following rules and regulations to live is not only
necessary for these people, but it is also a condition of
their faith.But in some books of biographies, his name is

entered with the title "Saeed A. Sarmad," in which his


biographical details are written. And from this, it can be
guessed

that perhaps Saeed is part of his Islamic name, which has


become famous regularly as he uses a pen name.
Obtaining knowledge: The specifics of his knowledge
acquisition are unknown.But in the books of biographies,
it is mentioned that he has perfection in knowledge and
excellence, as well as in the Arabic language. And from
this, it can be assumed that he has obtained perfect
knowledge as per the syllabus of his period of time.
Occupation at the beginning of the Sarmad: The
occupation at the beginning of the Sarmad was business
dealing. He took commercial goods from Iran and went
toward India. During that time, India was well known for
its knowledge and arts, and it was known for its
exhibitions of stuff and merchandise. But this young
merchant was on his way to India, unaware that once
there, he would invest all of his money in a business
there.Perhaps he wants to sell Iranian products in India
and wants to buy costly grains, rubies, and diamonds from
world-famous Indian mines. But he did not know that the
divine decree was taken against his will and wishes. He
should have to be involved in business till the end of his
life, but not in the markets of motif (which is a design
used as a decoration or as part of an artistic pattern)
materials but in the bazaar of beauty and love. Where,
instead of silver and gold, coins of a broken heart cut into
100 pieces and a broken liver cut into 100 pieces will be
used, and where there is the business of patience and
endurance, conscience and wisdom, and giving heart and
liver to buy one wrong style and one careless style.And
for the low cost of this difficult merchandise, which is

provided free of charge,

Not only that, but there is an exhibition in this bazaar;


before it, there was hustle and bustle.If you have courage
with you, then proceed further. Then you have settled the
last deal and its cash price is life. When a full glass of life
is exchanged for a glass of blood of martyrdom for a low
price, and if there is a Yousuf, who is the immodest
person who will not become a customer of this property
(merchandise)?
During that period, Iranian travellers used to come to
India by way of Sindh, and among the cities of Sindh,
Tatha was the most famous city at that time. And for
which there was an available position in the new
geography box, she lost position.This Tattva is such as
holy Sinai, which was made the place of manifestation,
like the Sinai Valley lying to the right of the mountain
where Moses had a glimpse of God. And first, here is
Laila, the beauty, who has uncovered her veil. It is said
that there was a Hindu boy whose eyes performed love
magic for him.And such things are possible as long as the
hearts are filled with love, and the needle of stitching and
the sword of the executor are the same and equal.Here in
the business, you will find buyers generally in a careless
and indifferent condition. But it is the person receiving
the merchandise who will be in need. But those who keep
their hearts in their hands as they search for buyers do not
have the right to find special attributes in the buyers. This
appears to indicate that this simple Iranian traveller was
concerned about the state of his heart and he was
searching impatiently for one buyer. And when he got the
buyer, he had no idea who he was dealing with or what he

was bringing.He thought to bless that, and he is in need,


so it is to get magic from the eye by paying a low price
for merchandise from the heart in this matter. And
without hesitation, he has accepted this deal.

Sarmad, who was forced to leave the desert, took the


first step in this process.And this is not Sarmad's
specialty, but the love he has for any topic, and it is the
first step in determining the destination of reality and
saying this is going down.And what is said about the
destination of reality is not well said?And it is through
love that a man has become a man.And in his heart and
liver if he is not in pain or has wetness in his eyes.And
then it is not related to the meaning of humanity. You
have seen a Zahid (ascetic) in his etakaff (retiremente for
continued prayer),) in his sitting, and in his angle of
worship.When he puts down his head he will not keep
away from the smile of the Houri and Ghilman (lovely
male servants in paradise) of heaven.It refers to the dry
minds that look for a friend in the mosques' places and
rooms. And they also will not be kept away from such
thinking.
As a result, those who seek the benefits of reality and
who are like the witnesses of the eternal have seen in the
worldly lanes by striking their heads on the doors and
walking in such places because if the heart cannot bear
the luxury of pain, it is a peace of ice and which is seen to
turn into water.And yet, the ice burning in the fire was
never seen. As the meaning of humanity is entirely pain
and grief. And the church of love is the fireplace. In this
case, such a person demands fire and makes a vow by
placing his heart on the fireplace.And to provide air by the
shirt's hem so that the burning fire is not diminished.
The first requirement for loving Allah is to close your
eyes to everything except him.But, because of his

relationship with water and flowers, man is in such flower


feet that it will not be broken from that side unless there is
a strong hurt on the heart of pain.When a bee sits on
honey, she will not be disturbed unless

she is disturbed.Similarly, unless there is no harm to the


man, he will not abandon the pleasures of the world.And
this pain will be made possible by the hands of love.The
angel of love has such supernatural power in his arms that
on the first strike of his sword, he will cut the threads of
blood as well as the chains of the world’s deception into
two pieces. And when the heart sees itself free of all
constraints, he will see himself, and there will be no
shackles in his foot except for a circle of eternals to
consider that for such a person whose heart is dead, who
could not find such a good time of imagination of the
breaking of the veil, and for whom electricity will not fall
on his stack of conscience. And he will not lose the look
of a witness to reality from the manifest conscience.And
that sad person speaking in- breath who did not spend his
nights in his dear and sweet thoughts mixed with his
Narcissus' dream.
Then he will not experience the night's unease in his
love of reality.If he does not sacrifice his immodest mind
and his capital of humility and meekness, which will not
be given to the proud lover of crooked nature and the
indifferent, how can he break the idol of self-selfishness
and egotism?. The sweet voice of a lover could not
surprise or make such a cold person foolish.Then how
will he have become intoxicated by the song on the
instrument of eternal personality?. In short, how does
such a bad luck person have the condition of such
intoxication on the manifestation of Senai mountain if any
intoxicated look of the boldness of the lover did not make
him unconscious?.The wicks that are already lit and will

soon catch fire. However, for new wicks, there will be a


required amount of time to be shown fire for an increasing
amount of time.

If the eyes are looking for beauty, they are ready to


leave.So they should go for the elegance of the veil.
Kanan's lost son, whose eyes did not wait for Yousuf's
magnificence and whose nose was opened by the smell of
Yousuf's dress.When there is a meeting in a room in the
wine house of reality, there will be a server of glasses of
wine.The wine server will remove the veil from her face
after a drink of sour sips of wine.Then, at that time, there
will be no required glass or wine for this reason. And
from the look of intoxication, get self-healing and self-
propelled gauze.
A glass of wine was also placed in front of Sarmad.The
goodness of a glass of wine depends on the beauty of the
hand that will serve it. So we could not forget that Hindu
boy. And it was his manner, Laila, that drove Sarmast
insane.But it's a shame that no lover can change Qais and
Farhad's fate or luck.For Sarmad, there are details about
Laila that indicate there was a Hindu boy, and if you
believe there is more to this story,Because in the bazaar of
love, when dealing is done, it is not seen who is the buyer.
And how much is the item sold for?
Even the biographers are unaware of where this event
took place.Wala Daghastani wrote that it had happened in
Port Surat. And Azad Bilbrami, in his biography book,
has mentioned Azimabad Patna. The oldest biography
book, ‘Marital Khiyal’, records that "During the business
in the city of Thatta, this event occurred when Sarmad
became the lover of the Hindu boy."So we have given
preference to this tradition. In short, we have to see where
the thunderbolt fell. And what is the position of the

harvest? And which was destroyed by the poor village


person?
The love's grief will be the same and equal
everywhere.Every lover, even though he will not be Qais,
must be Majnu (desperate

in love ) in this matter. When love comes,in it will tell o


wisdom and conscience to vacate the place for me.The
same thing happened to Sarmad.And there prevailed upon
him passion and madness comparable to that of wisdom
and conscience, as well as all money, effects, and
commerce that were destroyed as a result of this.And with
the world's relation, there remained only the shackle of
the dress covering the body, and its weight was later
removed from his body. As prohibitions are there for the
person claiming of conscience.
Desert wandering: Desert wandering is travel and
tourism in the world of love.And from which men will
gain perfect wisdom and experience.Majnu is prominent
among the attributes of love, and its reason is that there is
no opponent for him in desert wandering.
Sarmad has wandered the deserts of Sindh for a long
period of time. And he made his soles hot in the sand in
the deserts of Sindh. He lived naked and nudity in both
the hot and cold seasons of India.
Then he began a search of his headquarters so that he
could sit and wait for the final examination of the letter.
When there was such a result, then why did they wander
about in the desert?. But no, I said that this is added to the
law of perfection in love. And in the law of love, it is not
an exception.
This was a time when Alamgir was about to perform his
new trick on the Indian chess board.There was an end to
the rule of Shah Jehan, and Prince Dar Shikwa was the
crown prince of the Mughal kingdom in India in the
lineage of the Mughal family, who has a strange nature as

well as a strange mind, and who passed away. It will


always regret that there was control over his enemy in
India's history.As a result of the political maneuverings,

the original image was hidden.He had been a Darfuri


friend since the beginning.And he possesses the qualities
of a Sufi thinker as well as a person of mind and
heart.And he used to hang out with fakirs and Sufi
practitioners.His writings were saved from the destruction
caused by the incidents, which shows that the writer of the
text is not free from taste and condition. The great proof
of his fondness is in his aim, and he has removed the
difference between a mosque and an idol place. With such
modesty, he will bow his head before Muslim Fakirs, and
with the same meekness, he will bow his head before
Hindu Darwesh.And he used to be very fond of Hindu-
Darshan people.And in this case, the person of condition
will not disagree with him.Because, in this situation, if
there is a distinction between Islam and infidelity, what is
left to do but be blind and look in this matter?.Moth
should search for the lamp, and if he is fond of the lamp
of Harem, then he is not perfect for the demand of pain.
Sarmad, in the passion of madness, wandering here and
there, reached Shahjehanbad. Then fate has indicated that
he should come to a halt here.Because of the glass of wine
he was searching for, which is available in the wine shop
in Delhi, The author, ‘Marata Khiyal’ who was first in
demand for the loving of Alamgir in the temple of
Alamgir, wrote as follows:
"As Sultan Dar Shikwa, who has relations with mad
people and keeps company with them, As a result, control
over him was required."
Also, poor Ali Shair, author of ‘Marat Khial’, is devoting
his mind and energy to the debate between insanity and

sanity.He is unaware that there are such scales in the


world as would exist if you put madness on one
scale.And, on a different scale, if there is

sanity in the world, other scales may be lower as a


result.And also there are such buyers to whom, if given all
the capital of sanity and conscience, they cannot find one
particle of madness, and if such is possible, then there will
be a rush like a bazaar of Yousuf.
In short, whatever the case may be, it is due to the
wisdom of Alamgir, but we would like the madness of
Dar Shikwa and his friendship of madness. And their
sanity sword, which killed longing people and dipped in
their blood.And blood is flowing here from the body's
veins.Perhaps it was Dar Shikwa who was offended by
Alamgir's sanity.So for this reason, he was given
preference in the company of mad people like Sufi
Sarmad over meetings with sane people.

In short, Sarmad began living in the company of Dar


Shikwa. He was very devoted to Prince Dar Shikwa.
During that period of love uprising, he is sometimes
forced to leave his home.However, as is well known, it is
the last point of examination.So he could not go outside
of Shahjahanabad. Until Shah Jehan's illness and the
representation of Dar Shikwa provided things for the
Alamgir's manifest intention.And after a period of
uprising and killing, Aurangzeb sat on the throne in the
year 1069 Hegira. This was one of many problems for Dar
Shikwa's friends and his company, as well as Dar Shikwa
himself.Many of them were left with Dar Shikwa, and
those who were there in Delhi found themselves in the
boat of the storm. But Sarmad, who had no information

about this due to his engrossment, has no time in this


matter. In order to look the world in the eyelet he sees,
how will he get out of there?.But there had previously
been no information in this matter, but he was aware
that whatever had occurred

thus far belonged to the early stages of the love.He now


left to cover the final destination and which was going to
happen at this place.
Martyrdom of Sarmad: The authors of biographies have
mentioned many reasons for the martyrdom of Sarmad. In
the book, ‘Tadhkira Khiyal’, for this below-quoted
quatrain of Sarmad, the robe-wearing persons' ears were
standing alert. And they've called it infidelity.And it is
known that the prophet's body recorded Meraj's refusal
during his journey to the skies.

The sage says Ahmad rose to the heavens.


Sarmad claims that the heavens opened up in
him.

However, the ordinary Turkistani did not require


information about the war and conflicts by Muslim
jurists.He did not raise his head to look at them; what are
these narrow-minded people crying about in this
matter?.He was in such a state that there was no sound of
resolution or refusal discussions.
The true reason for Alamgir's appearance was his great
crime against Sarmad, as well as the fact that he used to
live in the company of Dar Shikwa.So he wants to kill
him for any of the random reasons in this matter in Asian
politics, which was in the background of the religion.And
there were thousands of people killed for political reasons,

but they were covered up by religion.When they couldn't


find a reason, they decided to base their decision on the
case of nakedness and nudity, which are against Shariah
Islamic rules.And from his one quatrain, it was

taken to mean that Sarmad was against the bodily


presence of the prophet in his visit to the skies in the holy
night of accession (Meraj ).
Mulla Qawi was the Chief Qazi of Delhi.In the
presence of Sarmad, Alamgir was dispatched to him to
inquire about his reason for being naked and nudity.Mulla
Sahib told him that "Despite his knowledge and
excellence, he uses to follow nakedness and nudity, and
on which excuse this depends." Sarmad told him that
"The Satan is very powerful, and Sarmad said a quatrain
extemporaneously (without previous study or meditation;
without preparation; on the spur of the moment; suddenly;
extemporaneously.)"In order to open the ink stand."The
sword of learned persons of the manifest which is kept in
it," but Aurangzeb's foresight determined that it is not a
sufficient reason in this matter. He knows well that
Sarmad is not an ordinary person, and his killing will not
be thought of as an event of general killing. There is no
one equal to him in knowledge and excellence.
His devotees outnumbered the entire population of
Shahjahanbad.As a result, unless and until there is
compelling evidence to the contrary, this decision should
be postponed.
Throughout Islam's 1300-year journey, Muslim jurists'
pens were wielded like swords.And many thousands of
people were killed due to their Islamic legal opinions. If
you read Islamic history from any side or period, you will
find thousands of examples of how when the king wants
to kill, he will receive equal assistance from the pen of the
legal opinion house and the sword of the commander in

chief, and not only for Sufi persons but also for the people
of the country, and for learned persons who went near
points of secrets of reality, they will face many
difficulties and

problems at the hands of Muslim jurists.Finally, they


found salvation in this matter by sacrificing their
heads.Sarmad is also the victim of this sword.With his
response, Sarmad silenced Alamgir.

Delhi's Hazrat Sufi Sarmad tomb

At last, it was decided to call Sarmad to the meeting of


the learned and excellent persons of the time, where, as
per the opinion of the learned persons, the final decision
will be taken in this matter.
So the meeting was held, and Sarmad was called there.
And first of all, Alamgir addressed him and asked, "The
people are saying

that you have given glad tidings to Dar Shikwa of the


kingdom; is that true?" Sarmad replied, "Yes, that glad
tiding was found true, and he has been crowned with the
eternal sovereignty."

Aurangzeb hated Sarmad for having been a partisan of


Dara Shikoh, on whom he had promised to confer the
throne. When Aurungzeb usurped the throne, he taunted
Sarmad about the succession of his favourite disciple,
Dara Shikoh, to the throne, which he had promised him.
Sarmad calmly replied: "God has given him eternal
sovereignty, and my promise is not falsified." Needless to
say, the Emperor was greatly displeased.
The turban-wearing people began to say that "Nakedness
and nudity are against Islamic Shariah law, and there is no
required person of conscience, and manner's excuse is not
allowed in this matter," to which Sarmad had already
responded in Persian.
Sarmad explains his nudity in a quatrain (rubai)
addressed to his relentless persecutor, Emperor
Aurungzeb: "He who saves you the sovereignty of the
world. Gave me all the causes of anxiety. He covered with
a garment those who had any fault (deformity), and to the
faultless he gave the robe of nudity."

He is happy on account of my humble self.


The evil eye and wine are stolen from my
hands. He is in my bosom; search for him

in me!
This is strange that a thief has caused me to be naked!

Khalifa Ibrahim Badakhsani, who lived during Alamgir's


reign.And who was a mystic-minded pious person.And
who was a soldier in the army at the start of his life.And
he was a member of the Fatah Allah family and an
Alamgir noble who served in the military in his youth.By
chance, he saw the look of Mir Jalaluddin Badakshani fall
upon him, and upon finding himself able to get favour
from him, he has taken him under his training. And he has
gradually risen to prominence.He could not get a chance
to get knowledge of the manifest, but there was such a
taste of his nature that he has divided the poetry of the
Masnavi Manvi’s seventh part into four parts. And which
is full of the condition and form of the pain and grief.
Moinuddin Jehandar Shah has the perfection of devotion
with him. In India and the Deccan, there were many
thousands of his disciples, and other people were included
in his circle.
Wala Daghastani has a tradition with holy people.
When a group of learned people asked Sarmad to dress
and his request was ignored, the sultan told them that
nakedness and nudity are not the result of killing.As a
result, he should request that he recite the Islamic
creed.Alamgir had heard that Sarmad had some strange
habits, one of which was narrating the Islamic creed, then
reciting up to the following:
The declaration reads as follows:
The saying is "L Ilha Ill Allah, Muammadun Rasl
Allah," meaning "There is no deity but God; Muhammad
is the messenger of God."

But he recited the following only.


“lā ʾilāha”
The learned people asked Sarmad to recite the Islamic
creed, and he did so as is customary.And this sentence is
negative. So, for this reason, a learned person has made
much noise in this matter. So they said, "He is engrossed
in the negative condition. And he did not reach the level
of affirmation. And if he says "Ill" Allah, then he will
become the false person. And which is not in the heart,
then how will he come on the tongue?" Upon this, learned
persons said, "This saying is clear infidelity, and if there
is no repentance in this matter, then he is eligible for
killing."

And Sarmad was told his original condition, without


more or less, and those who do not accept faith in the
invisible.The non-content name is "Search of reality."And
for their confirmation, they want a strong reason based on
observation of the eyes. The look of reality is a net
witness. And which Sarmad had not yet received by that
time.So, given what he didn't see, how can he say yes in
this case?.All visitors to this country who will pass
through this location.But Sarmad's crime was that he
drank the wine of reality openly with his mouth, rather
than hiding.And so he deserved a flogging.
If you carefully examine this declaration, which is
essential.But if the witness was the last stop for the
infidelity, there will be a camel somewhere. As a result, it
was the authority's responsibility to turn the camel to that

side.

In short, when there was no repentance from the side of


Sarmad, then without hesitation, a learned person issued
an order of infidelity upon him. And the second day, they
took him to the place of the cross to hang him there. As
per the statement of the author of Marat Khiyal, this event
happened in the year 1072 Hegira. And it had only been
three years since Alamgir had been crowned on the
Mughal throne.As per Shah Asad Allah’s tradition, who
was a Sufi person and a man of the reality of his time, his
statement is as follows:
"I have a special position of perfection in Sarmad's
service; when there began upspring and problems, I could
not control myself in this matter, so one day upon getting
the time, I told him that "As per seeing the request and
appeal of the mankind, you change your weight and
condition so there is no loss in appearance," and upon
hearing this, he recited his one couplet, and its meaning
and interpretation are as follows:

Hearing Mansour's call took the life away.


There will be another prison and crossroads stage play.

When Sarmad was taken to the place of martyrdom, at


that time there was a rush of all the people of the city, and
there was such a rush on the roads that there was no place
for the walk. "Where there is a liked show, there is
killing," and "Where there is no favourite game, there is
sacrifice," should be said.When one person went toward
the sword with a head-on palm to meet at maturity, it was

seen that the bridegroom's conveyance was passing from


there, and there was a rush of the participants in the

marriage procession who were passing by touching their


arms there.

As this is the love of the world, he was asked to come on


the housetop, and it was not required of Sarmad to lift his
head. When the executor approached him with his
gleaming sword, he smiled and looked him in the
eyes.And he told them, "Oh fateful sacrifice, you come.
Anyhow, it has come to me in any way. I know you well."
As per the tradition of the author of Marital Khiyal, upon
saying this phrase he has put his head under the sword and
has been given his life.
When the executioner, a low caste man of the sweeper
class, approached him with his naked sword, he wanted,
according to custom, to cover the condemned man's head,
but Sarmad hinted not to do it. Then he smiled and
addressed the executioner, saying:
"The friend with the naked sword has now
arrived." I recognize you in whatever disguise
you may wear.

He also uttered the following distinction :


"There was an uproar, and we opened our eyes from the
eternal sleep."
[171] "We saw that the night of wickedness endured, so we
slept again."
There was no time to author Marital Khiyal by flattering
Alamgir so he could find time to mourn the corpse of
Sarmad's blood.

There is such cruelty in this matter that, not content with


this tragic event, he wants to add this event of killing to
the quality and excellence of Alamgir. Despite the fact
that every page of Alamgir's history book is filled with
bloody events.It must be understood that it is the habit of
love that causes those with blood on their hands to
demand reward and praise rather than a criminal
position.So the field of love is like a sacrifice site, so to
shed so much blood there and receive such a large reward
Some people say that the place known as the grave of
Sarmad is not that, but his mausoleum only. And Wala
Dagestani has given his clarification in this matter: "At
the southern side of Jama Masjid, his head was cut off
there, and near there he was buried." "If this is not the
current place of burial, what will be the other in this
matter?" he writes again."The writer visited Sarmad's
burial place and was found all over the side green grass
everywhere," he wrote and which is full of fetishes
everywhere. And there was the strange favour of the
reality of Masnur Thani's visit to his grave in that place."
Wala Dagasthani lived during the period of Mohammed
Shah. And he wrote his biography in the year 1160
Hegira.
“His mausoleum is located in the Jama Masjid area of
Delhi, which is a popular destination for both special and
general visitors.Which is still famous for fulfilling the
desires and wishes of those who visit his grave.And where
the visitor's hands are raised toward the sky during the
recitation of verse Fatah.”
Sarmad did not recite more than La Ilaha during his

lifetime, according to Khalifa Ibrahim, but when he was


martyred, the person there heard each and every part of Il-
Lalahu three times

from his sacrificed head.According to Wala Dagasthani,


"From one reliable group it was heard that the head of the
martyred Sarmad was beginning to recite the Islamic
creed as well as Allah's praise."
During the present time, people will believe in such
traditions with much difficulty. It is the duty of the
authors of the biographies to keep the tradition of good
faith away from the events of history. I could not have
been surprised upon reading the above details. Because if
we don't have ears to hear the good faith, we'll have to
close our eyes to see the reality.In the spring season, we
have seen fresh and moist garden flowers. And in winter,
sad and dry branches talk with each other. Then upon
seeing the movement of the lips on the head of a martyr,
where is the surprise in this matter? And it is possible that
a voice came from the dead head of Hazrat Sarmad.
And the people of insight have seen the talking of the tongue.
250 years have passed, but the voice of Sarmad,
Shaheed, remains in our ears. Alamgir has sat on the
Mughal throne since the year 1069 Hegira. And after
three years of his rule, Sarmad’s martyrdom took place in
Delhi. And he ruled the Mughal kingdom for over 50
years, from 1658 to 1707 A.D.
Many people believe that Alamgir's inability to find peace
and harmony during the preceding time period is a
miracle of Sarmad's blood.As such, he has received the
message of death in the form of poverty and worries.
Such sentences, however, may not have come from the
biographers' pen.It is preferable for us to consider
Alamgir's helplessness in this matter.A history is a

collection of conjecture, guesswork, and personal


opinions.

Today, an incident will occur some distance away.And at


that time, two newspaper reporters will not confirm the
details mutually in this matter. Nobody knows what their
real position was at that time. And what rush of condition
and reasons were there around Alamgir?.When the
martyrs of love had no claim or objection in this matter,
why should we involve our pens in an act of
complaint?."Oh fateful sacrifice, you are here," Sarmad
said to the executor."However it has come to me, I am
familiar with you."So, what will Sarmad's complaint be to
Alamgir and his learned people?.This is the fact that in
the house of love, there is no hearing of revenge or claim.
There is nothing more illegal in the land of love than
malice and enmity, and such great worship is to lay down
the head upon the killer's return and, if possible, kiss his
hands.
Sarmad has one correct and one hand poetry book in my
library and which is not before me for study. I intended to
write a few lines, but I ended up writing several pages.It
is not possible to end the story of love. So I want to recite
verse Fatah and become silent in this matter. If there is
any chance, then I will present my article about the poetry
of Sufi Sarmad. Regrettably, this story cannot be told
briefly. But it is better to spend more time in the sadness
of the martyrs of love, which will be good for us.
An inscription on Sarmad’s tombstone: As informed by
the gallery assistant of the Delhi Fort Museum, there is an
inscription on Sarmad's tombstone.
We reproduce his letter, which is as follows:

"In reply to your inquiry, I beg to inform you that at the


head of Sarmad's grave, there is a masonry pillar with
lamp niches, and on it has been fixed an incised slab of
stone containing the following inscription in Persian:
This can be translated thus:
When Shah Sarmad was in the reign of
Alamgeer [Aurungzebe] set out on a journey
to Paradise.
Poor Akbar announced the date.
"This is the grave of Sarmad the Martyr."
Travels in the Mughal Empire: :Hearing that precious
items and works of art were being purchased in India at
high prices. Sarmad gathered together his wares and
travelled to the Mughal Empire where he intended to
sell them. In Thatta, in present- day Sindh, Pakistan, one
of his close disciples was a Hindu called Abhay Chand.
Although there is debate on the nature of their relationship
very little is known about the life of Abhay Chand,and
there ared no historical records to confirm the details of
their encounter except fort Sarmad's own poetry. Some
scholars have argued that, while Sarmad employed Abhay
Chand to translate the ‘Torah’ as well as the ‘Old and
NewTestamentst’, it is possible that Abhay Chand
converted to Islam or Judaism. It is important to note that,
in later years, Sarmad grew critical of all religions and
took a more spiritual position, which is closer to the Sufi
tradition.

At some point, he abandoned his wealth, let his hair


grow, stopped clipping his nails, and began to wander the
city streets. Although it is widely speculated that Sarmad
and Abhay Chand moved to Lahore, then to Hyderabad,
before settling finally in Delhi, there are no credible
sources to confirm the events.
Life in Delhi: :The reputation as a poet and mystic he
had acquired during the time the two travelled together,
caused the Mughal crown prince Dara Shikoh to invite
Sarmad to his father's court. On this occasion, Sarmad so
deeply impressed the royal heir that he vowed to become
his disciple.
Sarmad has been witnessed by the French physician and
traveler, François Bernier, who reported Sarmad as a
naked faqir.
Death: :After the War of Succession with his brother
Dara Shikoh, Aurangzeb (1658–17077) emerged
victoriously, killed his former adversary, and ascended
the imperial throne. He had Sarmad arrested and tried for
heresy. Sarmad was put to death by beheading in 1661.
His grave is located near the Jama Masjid in Delhi,
India. Sarmad was accused and convicted of atheism and
unorthodox religious practice

Aurangzeb ordered his Ulema to ask Sarmad why he


repeated only "There is no God" and ordered him to recite
the second part, "but God." To that, he replied, "I am still
absorbed with the negative part. Why should I tell a lie?"
Thus he sealed his death sentence. Ali Khan-Razi,

Aurangzeb's court chronicler, was present at the


execution. He relates some of the mystic's verses uttered
at the execution stand: "The Mullahs say Ahmed went to
heaven;

Sarmad says that heaven came down to Ahmed." "There


was an uproar, and we opened our eyes from the eternal
sleep. We saw that the night of wickedness endured, so
we slept again."

Abul Kalam Azad on Sarmad: Few people notice this


Sufi shrine outside the Jama Masjid in Old Delhi. It is
Sufi saint Sarmad Shaheed's dargah. This saint had come,
I think, from Armenia when the Mughals were ruling
Delhi.
As a saint, he used to roam naked, which was one of the
reasons that Aurangzeb had him killed.
When you think of Old Delhi, the first place that comes
to mind is the grand Jama Masjid. People rarely notice the
shrine right beneath the steps of the grand old mosque.
I often go there in the afternoon. This place sees people
of all faiths, and one hot afternoon, I was standing near
the tomb of Hazrat Sarmad Shaheed when a couple
walked in. I knew they were Hindus because the wife
wore sindoor and mangalsutra.They started praying with
their hands folded, as Hindus do.
It was such a beautiful moment. There was a couple who
did not believe in Islam but were standing with folded
hands, praying at an Islamic shrine. It was just so peaceful
because it said something about India.
For me, seeing that couple with folded hands illustrates
what makes India work: how people of different religions
coexist. I am sure that the couple had complete faith in
their Hindu gods, but

there they were praying to Hazrat Sarmad Shaheed with


the same devotion.
That symbolised hope in the multi-cultural and multi-
religious nature of this country.
The dargah is just below the stairs of the Jama Masjid,
which faces the Red Fort. It is very small. Outside the
shrine, there is a lot of chaos: Muslim Bhakti songs,
Bangladeshi beggars, and other sights and sounds
associated with Old Delhi.
But as you take off your shoes and enter the shrine,
which is a 20- step walk through a corridor, there is this
peace and tranquility that is just amazing. It's hard to
believe that just 20 steps outside is a madrasa world full
of chaos and noise.

The people of Delhi greatly venerate the grave of


Sarmad and daily burn lights and incense and sprinkle
fresh roses and flowers on it. The Muslims who come to
Delhi from far and near never miss a visit to the grave of
this saint. Besides, the musicians sing religious songs at
the grave of Sarmad nearly every evening, particularly on
Thursdays.
Peace to his soul, rest to his ashes, and may the revered
memory of the great poet be cherished and kept green for
ages to come in the land where he suffered martyrdom for
his open defiance of Islamic rituals and customs.
