1. (a) Represent the following sets in Set Builder form;


(i) A = {2, 4, 6, 8, . . .} (1)

(b) Write the following sets in Roster form;


(i) P = {x : x ∈ Z, 2 ≤ x ≤ 5} (1)

(c) With only one of; Singleton, Empty or Infinite, classify the following sets and give
a reason why;
(i) X = {x : −2 < x < 0 and x ∈ N} (1)

(ii) Y = {x : x is an even number, and x is also prime} (1)

(iii) Z = {1, 2, 3, . . .} (1)

(iv) The set of all straight lines parallel to the y−axis on the x, y−plane. (1)

(d) Assume arbitrary countable sets of elements to verify the following set laws;
(i) A ∪ (B ∩ C) = (A ∪ B) ∩ (A ∪ C) (2)

(ii) (A ∪ B)′ = A′ ∩ B ′ (3)

(e) Let the Universal set be U = [−3, 9], then A = (−1, 5], B = [3, 7) and C = (−2, 8).
Find each of the following sets and clearly display them on the real line.
(i) B ′ ∪ C ′ (2)

(ii) (U − C)′ ∩ (A − B) (4)

2. (a) In an intensive care ward at a hospital, it is found that 7 patients are hypertensive,
5 are diabetic, and 2 are both hypertensive and diabetic. Assume the entire ward
has a total of 30 patients.
(i) Construct a venn diagram to represent this information. (4)

(ii) How many patients are neither hypertensive nor diabetic? (2)

(iii) How many patients are not hypertensive and diabetic? (2)

(iv) How many patients are hypertensive or diabetic only (2)

(b) A cancer diseases hospital is pre-testing the suitability of new cancer treatment
equipment at the facility. A poll is made on 100 cancer patients and results obtained
are summarised in the table below:

Let A = Cervical, B = Prostate, C = Colon, X = Not Interested, Y = Neutral,

(iii) How many had cervical or prostate cancer and were not interested? (3)

5. (a) Find the range of values of x for which

(i) 4(x − 2) ≤ 2x + 1 (2)

(b) Find the range of values of k for which kx2 + 8x + 2(k + 7) = 0 has no real roots. (7)

(c) The equation 7x2 + 2kx + k 2 = k + 7, where k is a constant, has two real roots

(i) Show that k satisfies the inequality 6k 2 − 7k − 49 < 0. (4)

(ii) Find the range of possible values for k. (4)

(d) The equation
