Introduction
In recent years, the rise of social media platforms has revolutionized the way
people interact, communicate, and entertain thereself. With the increasing
popularity and accessibility of social media among teenagers, concerns have been
raised about its potential impact on academic performance. The widespread use
of social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Messenger, You
tube, and TikTok, has brought about significant changes in the daily lives of
teenagers. These platforms provide instant connectivity, allowing individuals to
share ideas, opinions, and experiences with a wide audience. However, the
excessive use of social media has raised questions about its potential distractions
and detrimental effects on academic performance. One of the main concerns is
the impact of social media on attention span and concentration. As teenagers
spend more time on social media platforms, they might become easily distracted,
leading to decreased focus on their studies. The constant notifications, messages,
and updates can create a sense of urgency, diverting their attention away from
academic responsibilities.
A 2019 study at Bestlink College of the Philippines found and show's that
social media usage could negatively influence students' academic performance by
causing distractions and reducing study time. Students often shift their attention
to chatting and browsing, which takes time away from academic tasks. This study
suggests that excessive use of social media leads to procrastination and affects
students' focus during lectures. However, social media can also be beneficial
when used effectively. Some research emphasizes that these platforms provide a
convenient way for students to access educational content and collaborate with
peers. If students channel their social media usage into academic-related
activities, such as participating in study groups or accessing online resources, it
can improve their academic performance.
This study aims to investigate the effect of social media to the academic
performance of grade 11 TVL students and identify factors that may influence
educational outcomes in the context of increased social media engagement.
