Isotopes

 Definition : Atoms of an element with the same number of

protons but different number of neutrons.
 Example : Isotopes of Hydrogen

1 proton 1 proton 1 proton

1 electron 1 electron 1 electron
0 neutron 1 neutron 2 neutron
Isotopes

Isotopes are atoms of the same element that

have the same proton number but different
nucleon number.
Properties of Isotopes
The isotopes of an element have :
 Same chemical properties due to
isotopes have the same number of electrons and therefore the
same electronic configuration
 Different physical properties due to
different number of neutrons
Remark: Physical properties (e.g.; density, weight properties that depends on mass)
