How to start a personal blog as a hobby?
Question
Hello!
For the past years, I've been very passionate about my personal researchings, most for college assignments. I
feel that because my area of studying is very small in my country it's hard to find people interested in doing
deep research and we have very few available materials, (not trying to brag but) because of that I feel like the
end results of my works involving researching end up better than the rest of the class and I feel like it's a
waste not sharing it.
I feel bad when I end my research and there is nothing more I can do with it (for now that I just finished 1st
year in college). I wish I could have somewhere I could post them and maybe find other people interested in. I
also enjoy making edits and play with web designing so I was wondering if a blog would be the best place to
start.
I am not expecting gaining money from it and I do not plan on making posts like every other day. Since my
area is small I don't imagine it being a hit blog and I believe it would be easy to share it in the small
communities. Should I start blogging? Is Wordpress.com or Blogger good options for this kind of small blog?

Since you are not wanting to "go pro" or "go semi pro" in your blogging...you might find that blogger
would be the better choice. For just the writing part of blogging, blogger has been a much more
productive platform than WordPress. However, that being said, if you have some interest and or ambition
in web/graphic design/development then you might want to check out the WordPress hosted free options
on WordPress.com.
It will really be about the focus of the project. If it is primarily a vault of your research online where you
and others can freely access it from anywhere, then you want the focus to be on ease of writing.....if you
want it to be a site that becomes more than that in the future then give WordPress a spin.
Good Luck!

I tried finding options for "free" in WordPress but was not able to. Any advice? Also, do they give you
the ability to sell adspace or anything like that once your blog gets more traffic in the future?

Make sure that you are using WordPress.com and not .org as they are two different setups....the
free sites are found on the .com where as the .org lets you download the builder to use for your
own hosted at your expense somewhere else and thus does not have "plans".
If you want to make money off your site then you will have to upgrade to a paid plan on
WordPress. Used to, not sure about currently, if you used blogger then if you had a 'proper'
Google account you could sign up for AdSense from day one I think.

I am using the .com and am taken to the "bill monthly or annually". Don't know what I am
doing wrong.

If its just as a hobby and a pass time then provided you enjoy it, it could be worth starting.

I would recommend you go with Wordpress. It will make it easier in the future to migrate from free
Wordpress to selfhosted Wordpress if your blog does end up taking off and getting traffic and making
you money.

It depends on the subject and the level of research, but if it’s as good as you say I’d recommend
publishing it in academic journals first to get your name out and then blogging about it in more layman
terms. This will give you credibility and exposure.

From my experience, deep research in academic literature is generally gathered from peer-assessed
journals, government websites and university textbooks. I would say that you may be better off getting
your research published and recognised for your efforts. Blogging can be a great hobby and even
monetise if you want to provide information on a niche that you think might be relevant to others. I
wouldn't say that a blog has as much of a reputation as university journals for research material.
However, if you do want to go down the blogging path I have written some articles on start a blog. I use
WordPress and like that it is flexible and easy to set up within a couple of hours.

SkipFood for thought,

to main contentyou might be cutting yourself short by making this a "personal
1 blog."

It is great that you are passionate about your studies and made a difference in your field and research.
But you might want to consider focusing less on you in your writing and doing personal blog post, and
instead staying more objective and continue focusing on the work.
You should still of course design your own website, write posts, and distribute your website accordingly.
But maybe spend some time thinking also about "what is your niche missing?" Having your posts be
more about the expanding on the research vs. focusing on you the researcher might prove to be more
valuable five years down the road for readers and future student of your study that need sources with
more credibility on paper than a blog article.
Best of luck on your journey and I would love to see your website when you finish!

As others pointed out, I will definitely try to publish something in the academic field, but right now I
am just in the middle of 3rd semester of a total of 9 in my first college degree.😅
I don't know how things are outside of my country but here I have to fill some requirements I don't
have or can't fill right now. My goal with blogging is to have a starting point where I can practice my
writing and hopefully give people some food for thought and engagement with their opinions and
suggestions. My posts will be way simpler than what I mean to publish someday.
Thank you!

Ah okay. Thanks for the context. Then yeah definitely do a blog. Maybe even use this as a time to
grab your FirstnameLastname.com and start using that like an online resume. Even though it's
regarding your education, it sounds like professional experience to me.

mainComparison
content between Blogger vs WordPress 1 Create
You can share content with an online audience using either Blogger or WordPress as it will provide you
with a way to do so. Both are free to use, come with free themes, and have enough storage space to
meet most people's needs. Blogger is an excellent choice for you if all you want is a simple and
straightforward platform for blogging that you can use to share material with your loved ones and close
acquaintances. If you own a company or want to write on a more professional level, using WordPress.org
will help you develop a more polished brand name for your endeavors.
Blogger is an alternative to WordPress that is also free and has been around for four years longer than
WordPress. It provides free themes, even though they are simplistic and make it obvious that you are
using the platform because they are all extremely similar to each other. However, it does offer these
themes. On the other hand, Blogger is an excellent choice for people looking for a simple and functional
blogging platform.
You won't get any bells and whistles, but it's easy to learn, and you can start posting content in just a few
minutes.Blogger and WordPress.org both offer free blogging platforms, however,, only WordPress can be
self-hosted.
This indicates that you need to employ a hosting business in order to use it. If you pay for a period of
three years at once, you can locate hosting providers that charge only a few dollars per month for their
services.
There are a lot of WordPress plugins that are free to use, but some of the more comprehensive ones, like
the ones that are designed to give you an online store, will cost you money.Blogger has provided limitless
storage since 2018. The amount of storage space you have with WordPress depends on the hosting
company you choose, but 50 GB is the standard for most companies.
This is sufficient for the vast majority of people. If more people start to visit your website, you may need
to change the plan you are paying for. Such plans typically include unlimited storage space and a
dedicated server.WordPress has tens of thousands of free themes and a few hundred that you have to
pay for.
There are other themes for Blogger that have a similar appearance, and one website claims that there is
a workaround for uploading a premium theme, while other websites claim that their solution does not
work.
WordPress is the best choice if you want your website to look unique and have a lot of ways to change
how it looks.WordPress does require a somewhat higher level of coding knowledge than Blogger does;
however, because it is such a popular platform, there are thousands of walk-throughs available for just
about everything that might be giving you difficulties.
The majority of hosting firms even offer one-click installations, making it easier than ever to get things
rolling. When your website is up and running, you will be able to use the drag-and-drop features of the
editor to add images, text, and other types of content. The functionality of drag-and-drop cannot be
found in Blogger.
Bottom Line
You can share content with an online audience using either Blogger or WordPress as it will provide you
with a way to do so. Both are free to use, come with free themes, and have enough storage space to
