Assignment 5-Solution
Assignment 5-Solution
Assignment #5
1. A steel alloy in the shape of a cylinder (displaying the stress–strain behavior shown in figure 1) with a
cross-sectional diameter of 16 mm (0.63 in.) is applied with a load of 85,000 N.
(a) Will the specimen undergo elastic and/or plastic deformation? Why?
(b) If the original specimen length is 250 mm (10 in.), how much will it increase in length when this load
is applied?
Solution:
(a) In order to ascertain whether the deformation is elastic or plastic, we must first compute the stress,
then locate it on the stress-strain curve, and, finally, note whether this point is on the elastic or
plastic region. Thus:
𝐹 85,000 6 ⁄ 2
𝜎= = 2 = 422.76 × 10 𝑁 𝑚
𝐴0 16 × 10−3 𝑚
𝜋( 2 )
422.76 × 106 𝑁⁄𝑚2 point is beyond the linear portion of the curve, and, therefore, the deformation will be both
elastic and plastic.
(b) This portion of the problem asks us to compute the increase in specimen length. From the stress-strain curve,
the strain at 422.76 𝑀𝑃𝑎 is approximately 0.0130. Thus:
∆𝑙 = 𝜀𝑙0 = (0.0130)(250) = 3.25 𝑚𝑚 (0.128 𝑖𝑛. )

2. A cylindrical metal specimen has an original diameter and gauge length of 12.8 mm (0.505 in.) and
56.80 mm (2.000 in.) respectively. It is made to undergo tensile force until fracture occurs. The diameter
at the point of fracture is 6.60 mm (0.260 in.), and the fractured gauge length is 80.14 mm (2.840 in.).
Determine the ductility in terms of percent reduction in area and percent elongation.
This problem calls for the computation of ductility in both percent reduction in area and percent
elongation. Percent reduction in area is computed in this way:
𝑑 2 𝑑𝑓 2 12.8 𝑚𝑚 2 6.60 𝑚𝑚 2
𝜋 ( 20 ) − 𝜋 ( 2 ) 𝜋( ) − 𝜋 ( )
%𝑅𝐴 = × 100 = 2 2 × 100 = 73.4%
𝑑0 2 12.8 𝑚𝑚 2
𝜋( 2) 𝜋( )
2
𝑙𝑓 − 𝑙0 80.14 𝑚𝑚 − 56.80𝑚𝑚
%𝐸𝐿 = ( ) × 100 = ( ) × 100 = 41%
𝑙0 56.80𝑚𝑚

3. Metallic material with an elastic modulus of 200 GPa must have a modulus of resilience of at least 2 MPa
in order to be suitable for a spring application. What would be the minimum yield strength for the material?
Solution:
𝜎y = √(2) (2 𝑀𝑃𝑎) (200 𝑥 103 𝑀𝑃𝑎)= 894.4 MPa

4. A hypothetical metal alloy that has a diameter of 10.0 mm (0.394 in.). A tensile force of 1200 N (270 lbf)
produces an elastic reduction in diameter of 3.0 10-4 mm (1.18 10-5 in.). Compute the modulus of
elasticity for this alloy, given that Poisson's ratio is 0.30.
Solution
This problem asks that we calculate the modulus of elasticity of a metal that is stressed in tension. Combining Equations 6.5
and 6.1 leads to
From the definition of Poisson's ratio, (Equation 6.8) and realizing that for the transverse strain, x=
Therefore, substitution of this expression for z into the above equation yields
(4)(1200𝑁)(0.30)
𝐸= = 1.528 × 1011 𝑃𝑎 = 152.8 𝐺𝑝𝑎 (22.16 × 106 𝑝𝑠𝑖)
𝜋(10 × 10−3 𝑚)(3.0 × 10−7 𝑚)
