Unit 2 - Lesson3: Normal Distribution & Empirical Rule

LEARNING GOAL I can use the normal curve to describe a data set.

1. Normal Distribution & Empirical Rule

25% of the data is within one standard deviation of the mean

75% of data is within two standard deviations of the mean

100% of data is within three standard deviations of the mean

2. Label the diagram: Mean (μ) = 12.2 years; Stand Dev (𝝈) = 3.1 years

2.9 6 9.1 12.2 15.3 18.4 21.5

3. SAT Scores
The SAT has a maximum score of 1600. Data from a recent testing session shows that the mean was 1210
with a standard deviation of 150.

a. Label the bell curve to the right.

b. What percentage of students scored more than

1510?

10%

760 910 1060 1210 1360 1510 1660

c. What percentage of students scored less than 760?

0%

d. What percentage of students scored between 760 and 1360?

75%

e. Let’s say you scored 1300, how would your score compare to other test takers? Why?

I would compare because It would show my shore as average and in the middle of 1210 and 1360.

f. Let’s say the mean remained at 1210, but the SD increased 200. How would that affect your score
compared to others?

It would make my score in the 75% instead of the average group.

4. Running a Restaurant

You own a restaurant and want to determine the quality of your front-of-house service.

Survey data shows that customers, on average, have to wait 27 minutes from entering the restaurant to talking
to their waiter. The standard deviation is 4.5 minutes and the data is approximately normal.

➢ First, go to the applet: https://ggbm.at/w9tzezej and set up your average 𝛍 and standard deviation
𝞼

a. What percentage of diners wait within 1 standard deviation from the mean?

68%

b. Approximately how long do the middle 95% of diners wait?

17.9-30.7 mins

c. Describe the number of minutes diners have to wait if their wait times are in the longest 10% of wait times
for diners at this restaurant.
40-47 min

d. Describe the number of minutes diners have to wait if their wait times are in the shortest 15% of wait
times for diners at this restaurant.
12-16 min

e. A second restaurant location has a longer mean wait time of 35 minutes and a standard deviation of 8
minutes. Describe the number of minutes diners have to wait if their wait times are in the shortest 15% of
wait times for diners at this restaurant. How does this compare to the first location (Part d)?
They would have to wait for 50 minutes this compares because it is significantly longer then the first
locations wait.
