INTRODUCTION :-

Generally, 'crime' are used for an act punishable by law. Hence here the English
word 'Crime' is used as a synonym for 'crime'. The scientific study of crime or
crime is known as criminology. Hence it is imperative to understand the meaning
and scope of criminology. According to Dusham, crime is a "social fact" as noted
by Mike etc. scholars in the book on "Crime and Society". It is common and
universal in various forms in all societies. Dukheim has shown the inevitability of
'crime' in one way or another. According to him there is no society which does not
face the problem of 'criminality' . Forms of crime vary, criminal behavior is not the
same everywhere, but in every society we have people who engage in punishable
behavior. Perverse forms of crime emerge when crime rates become abnormally
high. The situation is considered normal until the crime rate rises to a certain
extent, but when it rises to a certain extent, crime becomes a problem in the
society

IMPACT ON SOCIETY :-

Empirical research confirms only some of this wisdom. Crime relates as expected
to house prices, neighborhood satisfaction, and the desire to move. Crime not
only affects economic productivity when victims miss work, but communities also
are affected through loss of tourism and retail sales. Even the socalled victimless
crimes of prostitution, drug abuse, and gambling have major social
consequences.Crime is a major part of every society. Impacts of crime and related
problems on neighborhood viability may be contingent on personal, historical,
and locale-specific factors. Its costs and effects touch just about everyone to some
degree. The types of costs and effects are widely varied. In addition, some costs
are short-term while others last a lifetime. Of course the ultimate cost is loss of
life. Other costs to victims can include medical costs, property losses, and loss of
income. Thus, the above things can be seen to have an impact on the society and
the people living in the society by committing crime in the society. Apart from
this, some of the following impact can be seen on the society.

REPORT :-
Criminal behavior can have a significant impact on society and communities. Here
are some potential effects:

1. Fear: Criminal behavior can create a sense of fear among people, both inside
and outside their own homes. This fear can affect their daily lives and routines.

2. Economic Impact: Areas with high crime rates may see higher home insurance
premiums and lower property prices. This can make it difficult for homeowners to
sell their property and can lead to a lower standard of living.

3. Desensitization: In communities where crime is frequent, people may become

desensitized to it. This can be exacerbated by media saturation with crime reports,
which can normalize criminal behavior.

4. Social and Economic Costs: High levels of crime result in more victims, leading
to increased social and economic costs. These can include the costs of medical
care for victims, lost productivity, and the need for greater security measures.

ACTION PLAN :-

Criminal behavior is a pervasive problem that has far-reaching consequences on

society as a whole. This issue has been explored in the short story "The Rattrap"
by Selma Lagerlof. In this story, a tramp named Edla offers kindness and hospitality
to a man who has committed crimes in the past, leading him to reassess his
actions and their impact.

The story highlights the idea that criminal behavior not only affects the individual
committing the crime, but also has a ripple effect on society. The criminal in the
story is described as a "rattrap" that preys on the vulnerable and weak, luring
them into a life of crime. This parallels real-life situations where criminals can trap
others in a cycle of violence and criminal activity.

The impact of criminal behavior on society is profound. It can lead to an increase

in fear and mistrust among community members, as people worry about their
safety and security. This can create a cycle of fear that perpetuates criminal
behavior, as individuals turn to crime in order to protect themselves or their loved
ones.

Furthermore, criminal behavior can have economic consequences on society. It

can lead to a decrease in property values, an increase in insurance premiums, and
a drain on government resources as law enforcement agencies work to combat
crime. This can create a cycle of poverty and disadvantage, as communities
struggle to recover from the impacts of criminal behavior.

In order to address the impact of criminal behavior on society, it is crucial to

develop a comprehensive action plan that focuses on prevention, intervention,
and rehabilitation. Prevention efforts can include education programs that teach
individuals about the consequences of criminal behavior and provide alternatives
to crime. Intervention efforts can include mental health and substance abuse
treatment programs that help individuals address the underlying causes of their
criminal behavior. Rehabilitation efforts can include reintegration programs that
help individuals re-enter society and become productive members of their
communities.

In conclusion, the impact of criminal behavior on society is significant and far-

reaching. It is important to develop a holistic approach to address this issue,
focusing on prevention, intervention, and rehabilitation. By working together to
combat criminal behavior, we can create safer and more vibrant communities for
all members of society.
