SQL CAPSTONE

PROJECT
Step 1
Dataset Selection: This dataset was selected because it provides rich
historical data on Olympic athletes, which can help explore patterns in
athletic performance, participation by country, and factors influencing
success at the Olympics.
Data Cleaning: I’ll perform initial data cleaning to handle missing
values, especially in key columns like Age, Height, Weight, and Medal.
Initial Data Exploration: I’ll explore basic statistics and relationships in
the data to identify patterns. This includes analyzing distributions of
Age, Height, and Weight, and seeing how they correlate with medal-
winning status.
Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD): I'll propose a simple ERD based on the
columns to show relationships among data fields.
Step 2
Description: This project aims to explore the
characteristics of Olympic athletes over time, examining
factors like age, height, and weight to understand their
relationship with success (medal-winning) in various sports.
Potential audiences include sports analysts, coaches, and
organizations interested in performance indicators and
trends in Olympic success across demographics.
Researc Questions

How do age, height, and weight correlate with the likelihood of

winning a medal in the Olympics?
Are there specific sports or events where certain physical
characteristics (age, height, weight) are more prevalent or
advantageous?
Do these characteristics vary significantly between the Summer
and Winter Olympics?
Hypotheses
Younger athletes may be more prevalent in sports requiring
high physical endurance, while older athletes might excel in
skill-based sports.
Taller and heavier athletes could have an advantage in
certain sports, such as basketball and weightlifting, while
smaller statures might be more common in gymnastics.
Athletes in the Winter Olympics may have different average
physical characteristics than those in the Summer Olympics
due to sport-specific demands.
Aproach

I’ll begin by analyzing age, height, and weight distributions

within medalists compared to non-medalists, using statistical
tests to determine significant differences. Specific features to
focus on include Age, Height, Weight, Sport, and Medal. The
evaluation will involve calculating correlation metrics,
conducting group comparisons, and visualizing findings to
answer the research questions.
