INTRODUCTION
There are thousands of Litton Lathes in use throughout the world and many others
which feature some element of the Litton design. An innovator within the industry, Litton
has introduced the articulating jet mix burner, the planetary glass chuck, the horizontal stem
press mechanism, precision alignment design for heavy overhanging loads, foot control
valves to regulate flame size and spindle pressure, and the drag bar for spin and mold
forming. Recently Litton has introduced automated equipment such as the tooling bar, the
pressure control system, the burner control system and the multi-tasking motor control
system. Litton is a clear leader in technical innovation in glassblowing and glass process
control.
There are several reasons to choose a Litton Glassworking Lathe. Every machine
has: precision alignment of the spindles through ground, stress relieved, nodular cast iron
beds; hand scraped heads and tails; and precision bearings. While spindle alignment has
never been the subject of a guarantee, no lathe has ever left the factory with an accumulated
error greater than .002", for the full extended length. Beds are mounted in three point
suspension to eliminate distortion or misalignment that might result from warping or
unevenness in mounting on bench surfaces or floors. Precision ground box ways, which
maintain high accuracy in flatness and twist, are an integral part of the bed.
Spindles and drive parts are mounted in precision anti-friction bearings. Spindle
bearings are held to a maximum, non-repetitive runout of less than .0002".
Lathe spindles (except for the KB Series) contain their own packing glands for
applying air pressure or vacuum to the bore of the spindles, eliminating the need for
swivels or spit tubes. Optional differential orifice valves or computer pressure control
systems permit precise control of flow into the work. This feature prevents products of
combustion from condensing within the work during the softening process and also
permits continuous "floating" with pressure in forming and wall evening operations. The
lathes outfitted with seals can work with both pressure and vacuum. An optional selector
valve controls the introduction of air in either spindle, or in both simultaneously, by using
the foot pedals. The computer option uses the pressure control system and can control both
the magnitude and configuration of the blow.
8
Spindles are driven by sprocket and inverted tooth chain. These sprockets are co-
generated with the grinding operation from common centers and are an integral part of the
spindle. Backlash is controlled by long life fiber shoes, against which the back of the chain
rides. The fiber shoe contributes no wear to the chain and has the advantage that no link
chatter is produced. Chain stretch is readily taken up by an adjustment of these shoes.
In order to preserve precision during the operation of a lathe, where varying degrees
of heat are present in the working zone, it is necessary to shield the bed and heads from
radiant heat. Cover plates are provided at both head and tailstock, which effectively shield
the whole frontal area. The bed is covered by a continuous heat shield extending from
under the headstock to the end of the ways.
An integrated accessory system permits the interchange of accessories between
different lathe sizes, thereby minimizing investment and maximizing versatility. With
regard to chucking, a number of methods and accessories have been made available.
Burners have been developed primarily to provide the narrowest heating zone
commensurate with ample total heat. Fire control is usually by foot pedal, operating a fuel
proportioner valve assembly. The fuel valve assembly provides for a standby fire when
the foot pedal is fully released. The fuel mixture can be adjusted by a hand valve on the
face of the machine that permits manipulation of the proportioner valve while the lathe is in
use. Other burner controls include the Burner Control System which is operated by
computer. The functions of the Burner Control System can be over-ridden by the
computer logic interface control.
Of the 52 models of Litton Lathes, the Model F is the smallest. The F Lathe is
driven by a variable speed motor coupled to the drive shaft by a small timing belt. The U,
H, E, and K Series Lathes have an infinitely variable timing belt drive. A coaxial feature
allows the tail spindle to be disengaged while the headstock continues to rotate. The coaxial
feature is standard on the U and H machines and optional on the E an K machines. Coax
is not available on the longest version of the E series machines.
In the E Lathe series, all machines have the same firecarriage and drive
configuration. There are four bore diameters available in the series: 98 mm (EE, M, ME),
114 mm (EJ, MJ), 184 mm (ESA), and 209 mm (ESB). All are available in six bed
lengths. The M, ME and MJ are greater in radial clearance. The M Lathes have very short
legs to accommodate the extended radial clearance above the heat shield such that the
centerline of the spindle above the floor is the same as the EE. As a result, the handwheels
were designed with extensions for convenient operation. M Lathes can be equipped with
hand levers for valve operation, as opposed to foot pedals.
The K Lathe series represents the largest of the Litton Lathes. There are nine lathes
in this series (K, KS, KT, KA, KSA, KTA, KB, KSB, KTB) and they differ in two basic
respects. They come with either standard or raised radial clearance to the bed and in three
spindle bore sizes. The S designation refers to an 89 mm (3-1/2") increase in radial
clearance to the bed, the T designation refers to a 178 mm (7") increase in radial clearance
to the bed. The A designation refers to the 210 mm (8-1/4") spindle bore diameter and the
B designation refers to the 260 mm (10-1/4") spindle bore diameter. ESA Models of the
E series and models K, KS and KT of the K series have the same spindle nose
configuration. Similarly, the ESB Models of the E Series and models KA, KSA and KTA
of the K Series have the same spindle nose configuration. Therefore, although spindle bore
diameters are different, faceplates and chucks are interchangeable.
Litton lathes have a long field history, lasting 40 years or more. They can be rebuilt and
modernized to current design at the end of such period of service. Remote control and
automated systems are also available for convenience and safety, not to mention increased
productivity. At Litton - quality, innovation, and service are ongoing objectives.

F LATHE SPECIFICATIONS
The Model F is the smallest of the fine quality, precision aligned Litton Lathes. The standard machine includes an
infinitely variable speed drive. This is a very efficient DC motor coupled to the drive shaft by a small timing belt.
Lateral movement of tailstock and firecarriage are by sprocket and chain, with the controlling handwheels
remaining in a fixed position. The F Lathe is equipped with a rack and pinion firecarriage burner bracket which

MODEL D VERTICAL SEALING MACHINE SPECIFICATIONS
The basic concept of the Vertical Sealing Machine is that the fires rotate while the work stands still. One of the
pieces to be joined is supported above the fires, and the other is supported through the axis of the rotating burner
system.
There are three coaxial movements along the axis of the rotating fire head. The first is the fire head itself, which
rotates at approximately 100 rpm. One of the handwheels at the front face of the machine serves to move the fire
head vertically over a 108 mm (4-1/4 inch) range. This motion, together with variable adjustment preselection of
the burner tip angle and radius, gives complete control over the position of the heating zone.
The second movement, completely independent of the first, consists of a double walled tubular member with a
threaded nose, to which many types of glass or metal chucking devices may be attached. The total vertical
movement of the mandrel is 203 mm (8 inches), permitting a full 89 mm (3-1/2 inch) range regardless of the
position of the fires.
The third movement involves a precision positioner with 64 mm (2-1/2 inches) of vertical movement, and a quick
release positioner clamp which holds a hollow 13 mm (1/2 inch) diameter mandrel extending throughout the other
mandrels. This mandrel provides the non-intersecting support required through the axis of the machine and holds
stems, metal seals, etc., in a fixed position with respect to the bulb or device being supported. It allows free
movement of the fires and chucking mandrel. This inner mandrel is hollow, and its lower end is connected to the
selector pressure valve, so that tubulated stems may be readily sealed to blanks.
The Model D Vertical Sealing Machine is equipped with gas-oxy proportioner valve (9003), air valve (selection &
volume control) (9004), foot pedals, and a burner assembly of six single jet tips (9145).

Plumbed benches have a stainless steel top and a black backboard. They are plumbed with three
manifolds, one for gas, one for air and one for oxygen. There is a cut off needle valve, for each
manifold where the gas, air or oxygen would be connected to the lathe. (See the three valve handles
on left side of the bench in the drawing.) These same manifolds also supply gas and oxygen for a
hand torch, and gas and air for an annealing burner. Again, there are cut off needle valves here also.
(See the four valve handles on the right side of the bench in drawing.)

UNIVERSAL PLANETARY THREE-JAW CHUCKS
Three jaw chucks are available in the following models; FC, UC, HC, EC, ESC, KC and KCB. They
are ideal for holding spherical and conical shaped glass. The chucks can be purchased with standard
or long rods. The HC, EC, ESC chucks may be ordered with a donut option which provides gripping
similar to a scroll chuck with a minimum capacity close to 0. The model numbers for 3-jaw chucks,
longer rod options and donut option are listed below. Be sure to state both the chuck and option
numbers when ordering these options. Rods can also be purchased separately. Each chuck is equipped
with an adjustment wrench and a mounting wrench. Spools are not included but must be ordered
separately. With the use of interchangeable chuck backs and spindle nose adaptors, some chucks can
be used with more lathes than are listed below.
67
The chuck specifications which follow reflect the maximum capabilities of the chuck only, without
respect to the limitations imposed by the dimensions of the lathe it will be used on. When selecting a
chuck always be sure to check the dimensions of the lathe on which it will be used.

UNIVERSAL PLANETARY INTERDIGITAL SIX-JAW CHUCKS
The 6-jaw chuck has two independent 3-jaw chucks in one. Use either set of jaws alone, or use both
sets to hold two separate pieces of glass coaxially. Perfect for dewar seals, water jackets or ring
seals.
There are two models of 6-jaw chucks; HSJ and ESJ. Both chucks can be purchased with longer
outer rods. The HSJ chuck can be purchased with longer inner rods also. When ordering chucks with
longer rods be sure to state the model number and the appropriate option number. If longer rods are
desired on both inner and outer jaws of the HSJ chuck, the model number and both option numbers are
required. (Example: an HSJ chuck with long rods for both inner and outer jaws for an EE Lathe would
require the numbers 9970, 80481 and 80308). All rods can also be ordered separately. Keep in mind
that the longer the rod the greater the chance of distortion to the chuck arm. Each chuck is equipped
with an adjustment wrench and a mounting wrench . Remember that with the use of interchangeable
chuck backs and spindle nose adaptors, some of these chucks can be used with more lathes than are
listed below.

INDEPENDENT FOUR-JAW CHUCKS
There are two models of 4-jaw chucks; the 4601 and the 4600. Each jaw on the Independent Four-
Jaw Chuck adjusts independently, allowing the chuck to be conveniently adjusted to hold irregularly
shaped glass.
Four-jaw chucks can be purchased with standard or extended jaws. Extended jaw sets can also be
ordered separately. When ordering a 4-jaw chuck with extended jaws, be sure to state both the chuck
model number and the option number.
Each chuck is equipped with an adjustment wrench and a mounting wrench. Remember that with the
use of interchangeable chuck backs and spindle nose adaptors, some chucks can be used with more
lathes than are listed here.
The extended jaws for 4601 cannot be used on the HSA or HSJ lathes.
The extended jaws for 4600 cannot be used on the EE or ESA lathes.

LITTON THREE-JAW SCROLL CHUCKS
The Scroll Chuck offers a high degree of accuracy and a strong positive grip. Adjustment is by means
of the handwheel. A knurled thumb screw locks the grip on the work. The face of the chuck has a
raised area and screw holes for easy mounting of heatshields should your particular application require
them. Two bore sizes are available at this time. The chuck comes with stainless steel inserts as
standard. The top jaws may be mounted to the master jaws in either of two positions, thereby
providing two minimum and maximum capacities. Special jaws may be ordered to provide custom
minimum and maximum capacities, however the difference between the minimum and maximum of
any set of jaws will always be the same.
Chuck model numbers for the various lathes are listed below. Chucks should be purchased which
correspond to the rotation of the spindle. If a spindle rotates clockwise, it requires the clockwise
chuck. If it rotates counter-clockwise, it requires the counter-clockwise chuck. The spindle rotation
relationship is denoted by C for clockwise close and CC for counterclockwise close.
The Litton Scroll Chuck is a metric chuck. All screws, set screws, etc. are metric.

LITTON THREE-JAW AIR ACTUATED CHUCKS
The Air Actuated Chuck offers a high degree of accuracy and a strong positive grip. The chuck jaws
are opened by depressing a foot switch or operating a hand lever (must be purchased separately). Two
bore sizes are available at this time. The chuck jaws come with stainless steel inserts as standard.
The top jaws may be mounted to the master jaws in either of two positions, thereby providing two
minimum and maximum capacities. Special jaws may be ordered to provide custom minimum and
maximum capacities, however the difference between the minimum and maximum of any set of jaws
will always be the same.
The Litton Air Actuated Chuck is ideally suited for use in high production jobs where the time to open
and close planetary or scroll chucks becomes a significant factor. Another benefit to using these
chucks instead of planetary or scroll chucks in high production situations is the minimization of the
work related medical disorders such as repetitive motion fatigue syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome
that operators may be experiencing.
Chuck model numbers for the various lathes are listed below. These part numbers include the chuck
and the actuating mechanism. Actuating switches must be ordered separately.
The Litton Air Actuated Chuck is a metric chuck. All screws, set screws, etc. are metric.

Spindle nose adaptors enable the spindle nose of one machine to accept the accessories of another
machine. The chart below lists vertically in the left column the lathe on which the adaptor is to be
used, while spindle size is listed horizontally across the top. For instance: if you wanted to adapt U
Lathe accessories to your EE Lathe, you would purchase a #9461 adaptor.
Full length spindle nose adaptors provide the same abilities as the standard spindle nose adaptor
except that they also allow spindle nose collets and draw-in bar extensions for smaller model lathes to
be used on larger model lathes. Again, the chart below lists vertically in the left column the lathe on
which the adaptor is to be used, while spindle size is listed horizontally across the top. To adapt U
Lathe accessories to an EE Lathe, you would purchase a #9480 adaptor.

Burners
81
BURNER SYSTEMS
Litton surface mix burners are available in Standard, Swivel, and Ring configurations. A
burner tip refers to a single burner head. The number of fires on a burner relates to the
number of burner tips present. Jet describes the hole or holes in the top of the tip, through
which the gas is released. A single jet tip has one flame hole, a 6/7N has 13, the 7-jet has
7, the 10/11N has 21 and the Q5 has 55.
All burners feature movable joints where tips are connected to sidearms and where
sidearms are connected to the bed block. This feature allows for varied heat zone width.
All burner tips are constructed of brass (which are chromium plated) or of stainless steel.
The tip, sidearm and entire burner assembly are available in stainless steel. To obtain
stainless steel tips with a burner, include the letters SS following the catalog number of the
burner assembly desired. To obtain stainless steel tips and sidearms, include the letters
SS2 following the catalog number. To obtain the entire assembly in stainless steel, include
the letters SS3 following the catalog number. The Single Jet tip and the Q5 tip are available
only in stainless steel.
The stainless steel Q5 surface mix burner tip was designed to utilize hydrogen and oxygen
to produce a flame capable of melting quartz. A 1" OD quartz test piece, rotating at
approximately 25 rpm, was heated in excess of 2620˚C (measured with an optical
pyrometer). Q5 burners can also be used with other gases.
The Litton Ring Burner was designed for use with stationary or rotating glass. It differs
from other Litton burners in that the burner bed is round and surrounds the glass. Each
burner tip is fix-mounted onto the ring. The burner tips can be swiveled in unison by a
rotational movement of the entire ring.
The swivel movement on both the swivel and ring burners allows perpendicular or angled
contact between flame and glass.

ROTARY BURNER
Suited to both soft glass and quartz, the motorized Rotary Burner rotates the burner tips so that the
work may remain stationary. The Rotary Burner is cooled by forced air and is chain driven. These
burners have been used in the production of ampules and complex necking operations with excellent
results. They are also ideal for window seals or complex tube assemblies which are too large to
rotate. The Rotary Burner is configured to meet the application needs of the customer.
Factory representatives are available to help you determine the specifications for a Rotary Burner to
meet your application needs. To place an order it is necessary to specify:

SWIVEL/STOP SYSTEM
The Swivel/Stop System delivers sealed pressure or vacuum to the work. No longer is it necessary to
pressureize the entire spindle. Stoppers are easily changed to accomodate different sizes of glass.
The Swivel/Stop is available for all Litton Lathes. A rotary union on the outboard end of the Swivel
Stop facilitates the delivery of pressure or vacuum via any air or vacuum source.

5C HARDINGE METAL COLLETS
The 5C Metal Collet System is used when quick acting repetitive chucking of small parts is required.
This system is usually found in use on metal working lathes. Litton has made the use of this type of
chucking system available on its bench model lathes. Typically this system is an add on spindle
accessory assembly which mounts to the spindle nose of the lathe. In the case of the Model F Lathe,
special extended spindles may be ordered instead and installed in the machine at time of final
assembly. This option decreases the maximum spindle nose to spindle nose dimension on the Model
F Lathe from 527 mm to 485 mm (when one extended spindle is ordered) and 443 mm (when two
extended spindles are ordered).
Several methods of opening and closing a 5C Collet are available. These include (1) Handwheel, (2)
Hand Actuated Lever, and (3) Air Actuated Lever. The Air Actuated type requires the purchase of
either a hand or foot operated air control valve to direct air pressure to the operating cylinder.
The part numbers below are for one each. If a collet system is needed for both the headstock and the
tailstock, then a quantity of two must be ordered. In the case of the extended spindle for the Model F,
the numbers below include the factory installation of the extended spindle.

DRAG BARS
The primary purpose of the Drag Bar is to provide for Lathe Part #
precision dressing of large tube ends. The drag bar makes U077 9323-01
uniform diameter, as well as fire polished narrow edges on glass with steamhead 9323-21
sections used for bell jar seals to gaskets. The double bar support HSA093 9325-51
structure is of general utility in holding auxiliary burners, HSJA093 9325-01
swinging half-molds, travel stops etc. HSJ093 9325-01
HSJ143 9325-02
The drag unit consists of a flat graphite paddle bar which can HTJ093 9325-11
be adjusted to give outside diameter control. It will release HTJ143 9325-12
quickly from its control position by rotating on the top bar of the EE125 9328-12
double bar unit, away from the work. In addition to this rotating EE171 9328-13
motion against stops in both directions, a longitudinal movement EE199 9328-14
EE227 9328-15
of 3/4" (19 mm) is provided by a headstock supported lever and EE255 9328-16
linkage. Together with the diameter controlling graphite block is EE283 9328-17
an end-mounted graphite block which controls and presses the EJ128 9328-12
free edge of the softened glass to a limit of 3/4" (19 mm) from EJ174 9328-13
EJ202 9328-14
initial position; thus the two together provide control of the EJ230 9328-15
outside diameter and face. Articulating from the block holding EJ258 9328-16
this double paddle system is a third support hinging and swinging EJ286 9328-17
a 3/4" (19 mm) or 1" (25.4 mm) diameter graphite bar which ME120 9328-12
engages the inner diameter of the glass. The glass blank is now ME166 9328-13
ME194 9328-14
confined on three sides. With proper heating and softening, the ME222 9328-15
last 1" (25 mm) or more of the glass can be shaped under these ME250 9328-16
guided conditions on a 3" to 12" (76 mm to 305 mm) blank, just ME278 9328-17
as the manual drag ironing process is commonly carried out at 1" MJ123 9328-12
MJ169 9328-13
(25 mm) and 2" (51 mm) . If the wall thickness is non-uniform, MJ197 9328-14
as is most often the case, this system simply drags the softened MJ225 9328-15
glass around the periphery, from thick side to thin side, until MJ253 9328-16
absolute uniformity is attained. MJ281 9328-17
It is true that some skill is required in properly heating the ESA120 9328-02
ESA166 9328-03
right areas, but it is easily acquired. Fire polished surfaces ESA194 9328-04
controlled in diameter to ± 0.010" (0.25 mm) and faces flat to ± ESA222 9328-05
0.002" (0.05 mm) are quite possible. Whether for bell jars or ESA250 9328-06
general purpose, the precision formation of edges preparatory to ESA278 9328-07
ESB119 9328-02
ring seals, flares, or simple joints adds the concept of precision to ESB165 9328-03
the glassblower’s art. ESB192 9328-04
Special graphite blocks may be substituted to aid in forming ESB220 9328-05
tapered flanges or other shaped cross-sections as required; blocks ESB248 9328-06
are easily removed for change of shape or replacement. Specially ESB276 9328-07

STEMHEADS
Stemheads are used to make pressed seals on bulbs, tubes, etc. The Stemhead is operated by a lever
which closes the jaws down on the end of a molten piece of glass tubing and seals the glass around a
filament(s) (or whatever) which is being held by a customer supplied jig mounted to the end of the
center tube of the stemhead. They mount to the headstock of a lathe only, and are available in two
sizes: large and small. The small stemhead is available in three configurations: two-jaw, three-jaw,
and four-jaw. The large stemhead is available in two configurations: two-jaw and three-jaw. A
Stemhead Actuating Mechanism is required to operate the Stemhead. The chart below lists model
numbers for the various configurations.
Note: For the Model U Lathe, if the Stemhead Actuating Mechanism and the Drag Bar are being
used at the same time, relate this information to us since these two products share some components.
For all other lathes, use of the Stemhead and Drag Bar at the same time is not possible.

PISTON VALVES
SPINDLE AIR / VACUUM CONTROL VALVE
FOOT PEDAL MECHANISMS
The Piston valve uses logarithmic pistons in cylinders to vary the volume and adjust the gas-oxy
proportion. Moving the handle up and down varies the volume, and twisting the handle varies the
proportion of gas to oxygen. The valve is designed for mounting on the underside of a bench with pilot
adjust knobs sticking up through the bench. The valve is available in two sizes, the difference being
in maximum flow capacities. This valve is designed to operate with pressures of 5 lbs. oxygen and 18
inches of water column gas.
The Spindle Air Control valve is also designed for bench mounting. The knob in the center allows the
operator to select pressure or vacuum for either or both spindles. Movement of the levers applies the
chosen function to the chosen spindle(s). Designed primarily for use on bench style lathes; F, U,
HSA, HSJ Lathes.
The piston type proportioner valves may be used on the larger floor model lathes with the aid of a
special bracket and plate assembly. The following assemblies include the valve and bracket, neatly
assembled into one easy-to-mount unit. The complete unit mounts on the underside of the lathe bed.

ROTARY COCK VALVES AND FOOT PEDAL MECHANISMS
Listed below are the model numbers for standard cast iron valves and their required Foot Pedal
Mechanisms. These are gas-oxy proportioner and volume control valves with spindle air control.
Valves are designed to release a small flow of gas when actuating mechanisms are in the off position.
This provides a pilot for burners. The spindle air delivery function of the valves is compatible for use
with the Swivel/Stop System (see page 5-GACC-1 of the catalog). Recommended pressures to the
valves are 5 lbs oxygen, 18 inches of water column gas.
The EK Valve Foot Pedal Mechanism is available with an optional Foot Pedal Stop. It allows the
foot pedal volume control for the gas-oxy proportioner valve to be set at any desired position. It
automatically releases when the foot pedal is pushed.
The EK Valve Hand Lever Mechanism allows complete control of the valve through the use of hand
levers instead of requiring foot operation for volume control.

COMPUMOTOR™ STEPPER MOTOR/DRIVER SYSTEMS
The following stepper motors are microstepping motors that make 25,400 steps per revolution (M-
Series) or 25,000 steps per revolution (A-Series). The resulting smoothness and high resolution
provide the latest developments in motion control. They will run up to approximately 750 RPM.
However, above approximately 300 RPM the torque diminishes.
The OEM Series is the latest in Compumotor Systems that allows purchasing individual components.
Motors and drivers in this case do not have to be matched to each other.
The AX-Series Driver is user programmable. The E suffix indicates encoder attached.

96000 SERIES INTERFACES & CONTROLS SPECIFICATIONS
The Litton 96000 controller provides a state of the art remote control interface for Litton semi-
automated glass lathes. These units provide a means of controlling the direction and feed rate of the
Parker Hannifin Compumotors that are used to move various components on the lathe such as the
firecarriage, tailstock, and tooling options. The control is form, fit, and function compatible with the
well established 9610 series controllers. This means that it can be used to update or expand an
existing installation with no change in support requirements. The 96000 is the same size as the 9610
units and uses the same input signals.
In addition, it has a convenient LCD touch panel display that provides additional functionality not
found on previous Litton controllers. Perhaps the greatest benefit of this method is the ease with
which the controller can be setup directly from the front panel. The unit accepts separate right and left
speed and delay settings and will automatically oscillate within a distance range selected by the user.
The LCD panel continuously displays the current direction and speed of the controlled function as
well as the number of cycles and passes accomplished. A zero reference can be set from the panel
and the motor can be jogged in either direction to a precisely monitored offset from the zero reference.
A freewheel function is provided for easy manual positioning.
In the remote mode, as with the 9611 interface, there are two speed ranges selected by applying logic
levels at pin 6 of the rear panel DB25 connector. They are nominally 0 to 300 mm per minute for the
low range and 0 to 5,500 mm per minute for the high range. Internal circuitry provides acceleration
and deceleration control to insure smooth motor starting and stopping. Feed rate is controlled by
applying a 0-10 Volt DC control voltage at the DB25 connector. The two ranges can be controlled by
a single 0-10 Volt source or an internal jumper ( JP2 ) can be changed to allow each range to be
controlled by separate supplies. The direction of motor travel is controlled at pin 3 of the DB25
connector. The polarity of this signal is configurable in software.
Although the 96000 was initially developed to control glassworking lathes, it can be used for any
stepper motor control application.
Installation typically requires attaching the motor cable connector to the Motor Output connector
and an optional remote control cable to either the Remote Input DB25 connector or the Remote
Input Terminal Strip on the rear panel of the controller. The remaining connector is for the AC
power cord. The user must provide the proper signals to the remote control cable. This typically
consists of a SPDT switch for each function ( High/Low, Direction, and Local/Remote ) and a 0-10
Volt adjustable DC power supply. On the DB25 connector, pins 1 or 13 can be used as a Ground and
pin 14 as a source of +12 Volts DC for applying to input pins 3, 4, and 6. One pole of each selector
switch can be connected to Ground, the other to +12 Volts. The center position of the switch can then
be connected to the appropriate pin on the DB25 connector as shown below. A terminal strip on the
rear panel provides a means of connecting limit sensors as well as the normal remote control inputs.
When the limit switches are activated they apply a 0 VDC (zero volts direct current) or GND
(Ground) level to the appropriate rear panel input. +12 VDC and +5 VDC are provided on the terminal
strip for use by the control circuitry.
Because of advances in component design the 96000 offers extremely good feed rate linearity relative
to input control voltage. The input impedance of the 0-10 Volt analog to digital input control modules
is very high and therefore presents minimal loading on the control voltage. The 96000 will work well
with any of the voltage sources used to control the 9610 series. Good control voltage regulation and
filtering is recommended in electrically noisy environments.
The use of sophisticated microprocessor techniques assures that the displayed values exactly match
the control pulses sent to the motor indexer units. This means that the displayed values are extremely
accurate. In addition this allows for more convenient entry of control parameters by means of the
touch screen interface. Speed, delay, distance, and cycle count can all be input either directly with
the onscreen keypad or by scrolling with onscreen up / down arrows. The response speed of the arrows
increases the longer they are held down. This allows for rapid scrolling to a particular range followed
by slower scrolling for fine control of settings.
The 96000 is highly configurable via RS-232 to assure a proper match of the controller to the
controlled motor. This is normally done at the factory but can easily be done in the field.
110
There is one internal jumper that is provided to insure compatibility with 9610 series controllers. It is
labeled JP2 and provides the capability of controlling both Hi and Lo remote speed ranges from either
a single voltage supply or separate voltage supplies. The default is to use a single supply. If separate
speed supplies are used, JP2 must be set to the “separate” position. Failure to do so effectively
shorts the two supplies together. This can damage both the supplies and the controller.

9540 SPINDLE MOTOR CONTROL
The primary advantage of using the 9540 Spindle Motor Control is that it can be stationed at any
position for the operator's convenience and safety for high temperature work or with chemical work
associated with such processes as Fiber Optic Preform manufacture.
The 9540 Control replaces the standard electronic control housing on the lathe. The 9540 Control can
be mounted in a 19" rack mount chassis for remote installation. It may be used for all models of
lathes, with the exception of the F and U series.
The 9540 is used with permanent magnet motors with 90 volt armatures. The motor and motor cord is
not included but is available upon request. If the 9540 is ordered for a machine other than a Litton
Lathe; motor, pulleys, belts and motor mounts may need to be replaced.
The front panel controls consist of a main power switch, a start button, a stop button, a three position
reversing switch (forward, stop, reverse), a tailstock on/off switch (co-axial versions only), and a
speed potentiometer for infinite speed control over a 50-1 range.
The rear panel of the 9540 Control has three sockets. The "emergency stop" socket is intended for use
with a safety shut-off switch. A normally closed switch should be series connected to the plug. When
this switch is opened the machine will stop and must be re-started from the front panel.
The "external on/off" socket can be used for an on/off switch at any location. A normally open switch
should be series connected to the plug. When this switch is closed the machine will start and will
stop when the switch is opened.
More than one switch may be series connected to either of these sockets. The machine will not run
unless a jumpered plug or closed switch is connected to the emergency stop socket and the external
on/off socket. The control is supplied with jumpered plugs for these two sockets.
The socket marked "DC Motor" is for connecting a permanent magnet DC motor with a 90 volt
armature. A motor plug is supplied on the motor cord (motor with cord is not included with 9540). If
you wish to supply your own motor, the motor plug may be purchased separately using part number
51063.
See page Spec-3 at the beginning of section 2 for information on how to order a lathe with a 9540
control instead of the standard spindle control.

GLASSMAKER
GlassMaker is a complete serial control system consisting of a set of hardware controller boards and a
software program. The Serial Controllers are connected in a "daisy chain" configuration that can
operate with any host computer that is capable of RS-232 serial communications.
The Hardware
A typical system used to control a
Litton Autolathe is illustrated at the
right. It consists of six Compumotors,
two Serial Controller Boards, a Serial
DC Motor Controller, and a Serial
Analog Controller Board. The host
computer has GlassMaker software
installed. The stepper motor drivers
provide stepper motor control for such
functions as the tailstock and fire
carriage. Each motor has an associated
home sensor. The Serial Controller
Board provides digital controller signals
to activate or deactivate air logic boards
or Grayhill AC/DC output modules.
Opto-isolated inputs are available that
can be used to read signals for program
control purposes. The Serial DC Motor
Controller is used to control 1/2 HP or
3/4 HP motors and a coaxial clutch.
The Serial Analog Controller provides
analog inputs and outputs used to
control such functions as mass flow
control valves.
115
Glassmaker will work on any Macintosh computer but it is suggested that a 120 MHz Power PC with
20 megabytes or more of RAM be used as the host computer. This will assure optimum performance.
Compumotors are controlled by means of Serial Adapter Boards that interface each Compumotor
Indexer to the system. The microcontrollers for Compumotors are built into the Indexer unit. This
method provides flexibility in the choice of indexer / driver combinations. This is helpful in retrofitting
or updating older systems. The 650X Indexer/Driver is preferred for new installations. It combines both
the microcontroller controlled indexer and motor driver in one compact unit. Older installations can
continue to use existing “M” series drives by using an OEM010 indexer to provide the
microcontroller/indexer functions. The OEM010 can be used for the same purpose with an OEM650.
Possible combinations are shown below. The “Home” sensor for each motor connects to the
associated Serial Adapter Board.
The Serial DC Motor Controller interfaces the system to a Minarik DC Motor Driver and a coaxial
clutch. The Serial Controller Board provides for digital control inputs and outputs. Simple circuits are
shown for a proximity switch and three pushbuttons. The output signals drive auxilliary circuitry to
operate a wide range of devices. Note that the 16 outputs may be configured as 16 inputs. These
lines must be configured as all inputs or all outputs. No mixing is allowed. If more inputs or outputs
are required than can be provided by one Serial Controller Board, additional boards may be used. The
Serial Analog Controller Board interfaces Glassmaker to Grayhill 73G series analog I/O modules.
These are available in voltage or 4-20ma current loop models. Voltage models are available in 5 or
10 volt versions. Analog controls are used to monitor or control contiuously variable quantities. The
diagram on the following page shows how potentiometers (variable resistors) may be connected to
provide a continuously variable control voltage source. It also shows a meter used to monitor voltage
or current and a mass flow control used to operate a continuously variable valve.
116
The Software
GlassMaker 4.0 software is designed to make configuring , using, and programming the entire system
both easy and intuitive. It completely eliminates the need for cryptic control code syntax through the
use of comprehensive menus. All aspects of the system are accessible at the host computer. The
system has been designed to allow the operator to accomplish objectives rapidly by automating all
programming tasks.
GlassMaker software contains a set of powerful programming commands that allow the user to design
a sequence of events that can be used to control lathe operation. The user is prompted for information
that may be required to complete a command statement. The statements are displayed continuously
as the program is developed and the user can easily edit any changes quickly and easily using the
built-in editor. There is on-line help detailing how the commands are used.

Maintenance
125
REBUILD: LATHES
Many times older lathes are less productive. A popular feature of Litton Lathes is their capability to
be rebuilt and/or retrofitted to current technology. A rebuilt lathe will have the same field life,
accuracy, smooth operation and appearance as a new lathe.
REBUILD: CHUCKS
Older chucks which are damaged or worn can, in most cases, be restored to full usefulness by being
rebuilt. Rebuilt chucks are like new in appearance, performance and endurance.
