NUTRITION LAB ASSIGNMENT

PHYSIOLOGIC VALUE OF FOOD:

1. An ENGLISH MUFFIN HALVE:

Calculate the physiologic value of the following food items and percentage of each
of the nutrients then compute its total energy. (7 pts.)
CHHO 33g
CHON 11g
FATS 9g 2.

ANSWER:
Physiologic Value of Food (English Muffin Halve)
● Given nutrients: Carbohydrates (CHHO): 33g
Proteins (CHON): 11g
Fats: 9g
● Calculate the total energy (kcal) of each nutrient: Carbohydrates: 4 kcal per gram
Protein: 4 kcal per gram
Fats: 9 kcal per gram
● Calculate energy contribution of each nutrient:
- Energy from Carbohydrates = 33g × 4 kcal/g = 132 kcal
- Energy from Protein = 11g × 4 kcal/g = 44 kcal
- Energy from Fats = 9g × 9 kcal/g = 81 kcal

● Total energy = 132 kcal + 44 kcal + 81 kcal = 257 kcal

● Calculate the percentage of each nutrient's contribution to the total energy.
- % Carbohydrates = (132 kcal / 257 kcal) × 100 = 51.36%
- % Protein = (44 kcal / 257 kcal) × 100 = 17.12%
- % Fats = (81 kcal / 257 kcal) × 100 = 31.52%

● Final Results
- % Carbohydrates = 51.36%
- % Protein = 17.12%
- % Fats = 31.52 %
2. Compute for the REE by BBW:
Refer to your table on metabolic size / kg: (3pts.)
A. a 35 kg man
B. a 45 kg woman
C. a 20 kg child

ANSWER:
REE by BBW (Resting Energy Expenditure)
You will need a reference table for metabolic size per kg, but assuming you have access
to that, use the formula based on the metabolic size per kg multiplied by body weight
(BBW).
A. 35 kg man
B. 45 kg woman
C. 20 kg child
● Find the metabolic size in kcal/kg
A. 35 kg man = 14.4 kg
B. 45 kg woman = 17.4 kg
C. 20 kg child = 9.5 kg
● Calculate the Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) using body weight (BBW) and
metabolic size per kg (in kcal/kg), the formula is:
- REE = Metabolic size (kcal/kg) x Body weight (kg)

● Given the metabolic size values, we can calculate for each case:
- A. 35 kg man:
Metabolic size: 14.4 kcal/kg
- REE = 14.4 kcal/kg x 35 kg= 504 kcal
- B. 45 kg woman:
Metabolic size: 17.4 kcal/kg
- REE = 17.4 kcal/kg x 45 kg = 783 kcal
- C. 20 kg child:
Metabolic size: 9.5 kcal/kg
- REE = 9.5 kcal/kg x 20 kg = 190 kcal

● Final Results
35 kg man: 504 kcal.
45 kg woman: 783 kcal.
20 kg child: 190 kcal.
3. RULE OF THE THUMB METHOD
What is the BMR of the following: (2 pts.)
A. Male: 65 kgs
B. Female 75 kgs

ANSWER:
BMR Using Rule of Thumb Method:
The Rule of Thumb Method approximates BMR using 1 kcal per kg per hour for men
and 0.9 kcal per kg per hour for women.

● For a 24-hour day:

A. Male, 65kg
- BMR = 65 kg × 1 kcal/kg/hour × 24 hours = 1,560 kcal/day

B. Female, 75 kg
- BMR = 75 kg × 0.9 kcal/kg/hour × 24 hours = 1,620 kcal/day

● Final Results
A. 1,560 kcal/day
B. 1,620 kcal/day

4. Computation of Desirable Body Weight:

Calculate the DBW of a 36 year old male, 5’8”tall using the 2 methods:
(5pts each) A. Using Ador Dionisio’s Method:
B. Using Tannhauser’s Method:
ANSWER:
Computation of Desirable Body Weight (DBW)
● To calculate the Desirable Body Weight (DBW) of a 36-year-old male, 5'8" tall
using the two methods, let's break down each formula.

A. Ador Dionisio’s Method:

1. For males:
Add 106 lbs for the first 5 feet (60 inches).
Add 6 lbs for each additional inch above 5 feet.:
Steps:
Height: 5'8" = 68 inches.
First 60 inches: 106 lbs.
Remaining inches: 8 inches → 8 × 6 lbs = 48 lbs.

Total DBW = 106 lbs + 48 lbs = 154 lbs.

B. Tannhauser’s Method:
1. For males:
The formula is:
DBW = Height (cm) - 100 + Height (cm) - 100 x 10%

Steps:
Convert height to centimeters: 5'8" = 173 cm.
Subtract 100 from height: 173 - 100 = 73.
Add 10% of this value: 73 + 7.3 = 80.3 kg.
Convert to pounds:
80.3 kg × 2.20462 = 177.03 lbs.

● Final Results:
Ador Dionisio’s Method: 154 lbs.
Tannhauser’s Method: 177.03 lbs.
5. Compute for the Body Mass Index (BMI): (4 pts each)
a. Weight: 120 lbs, Height: 5’3”
b. Weight: 55 kgs, Height: 164 cms

ANSWER:
Body Mass Index (BMI)

● The formula for BMI is:

BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)^2

a. Weight: 120 lbs, Height: 5'3"

- Convert weight to kg and height to meters:
Weight: 120 lbs ÷ 2.205 = 54.43 kg
Height: (5×12 + 3) × 2.54 = 160.02 cm = 1.6002 m

BMI = 54.43kg / (1.6002m)^2 = 54.43 / 2.5606 m = 21.25

b. Weight: 55 kg, Height: 164 cm

- Convert height to meters:
Height: 164 cm ÷ 100 = 1.64 m

BMI = 55 kg / (1.64m)^2 = 55 kg / 2.6896 m= 20.46

● Final Results
a. 21.25
b. 20.46
