Abstract

This project aims to provide an intelligent solution for monitoring toxic sewage gases, working on
a real-time sewage level detection and monitoring system. When sewage levels and toxic gases
cross certain thresholds, alerts are sent to remote observers investigating the situation. Information
is then passed along with various gas ppm values that indicate whether it is safe for workers to
clean or work in the environment. Integrate remotely located IoT monitoring devices and IoT
platforms to create the proposed system. This requires calibration of industrial gas sensors and
determination of correct thresholds for sewage treatment plants and facilities. This hardware is
designed to provide advance warning and safety to sewer workers when the concentration of
hazardous gas constituents increases over time. Various types of sensors are used to monitor
parameters present in the wastewater such as gas, temperature. When the threshold falls below the
detection value, the system analyzes the concentration of various toxic gases, graphs the results
and monitors them in real time to send SMS or call an alarm, to alert sewers/cleaners and help
protect against dangerous diseases. Satisfy social interest. In the proposed system, sensor sample
values were recorded and displayed in the ThingSpeak analysis tool. Carbon monoxide and
methane sensors gave high values of 2.3 and 2.3 respectively. At 60ppm, this exceeded the
threshold, so we used the GSM module to send an alert to the mobile number entered in the code.

Introduction

1.1 Introduction

Environmental sewage the use of an Internet of Things (IoT) device and platform to monitor
hazardous gas has been suggested as a way to assist sewer workers who put their lives in danger
and to assure minimal health risk. [4] The death rate among sewage employees has risen recently
asa result of these toxic pollutants. The failure to cleanse sewage when it reaches a harmful
level causes hundreds of sewage cleaners to pass away every year in accidents and from a variety
of illnesses including hepatitis and typhoid that are brought on by sudden or prolonged
exposure to hazardous gases. The formation of toxic wastes that produce hazardous gases from
the natural decomposition of sewage and its mixes in slurries is the main source of sewage gases.
The formation of toxic wastes that produce hazardous gases from the natural decomposition of
sewage and its mixes in slurries is the main source of sewage gases. If inhaled in large amounts
or for an extended period of time, these gases have the potential to be fatal. Methane, minuscule
amounts of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ammonia, hints of hydrogen sulphide (H2S),
nitrogen dioxide, and minuscule amounts of carbon monoxide make up the majority of the gases
found in septic tanks. [4] Sensors have been utilized to assess the amount of dangerous gas and
issue a warning in order to evaluate the gases present in the sewage environment. Gas sensors
continuously monitor the dangerous gases released by sewage, such as hydrogen sulphide,
methane, and carbon monoxide, and they update their readings when they exceed the normal
level. The project's goal is to create a working prototype for realtime gas concentration
monitoring at sewage treatment facilities and septic tanks. The created system is adaptable to
different sewage facilities, both urban and rural. By making minor design changes, the system
may be made to function properly in both home and industrial settings. The ThingSpeak IoT
platform allows remote access to concentration or ppm levels from any locationin the world. The
main components of this project were the creation of an IoT platform and hardware for
monitoring the setup. This system offers us a solution to the dynamically changing sewer
environment as compared to earlier systems, which lacked real-time monitoring and online
updating of the status of gas concentrations in the air .

Literature Survey

In Paper [1] “IoT based Sewers Safety Monitoring and Alert System”, authors (Shubhada Malpe,
Pranjali Gurad, Ankita Jambhorkar, Amit Pathare) objective to develop a system that can instantly
identify and alert workers of dangerous gas levels. The determined gas levels are sent to Firebase.
The connected mobile devices of the authorised remote workers will receive an alert if levels
exceed the threshold. If sewage is expected to overflow, SMS messages can be utilised to notify
the authorities.

In Paper [2] “Smart Safety Monitoring System for Sewage Workers Using IoT”, authors (P.
Sasirea, Abzari A., Ajay M.,Pavithra N.) have talked about the risks to the sewage employees'
health. Every year, several sanitation employees pass away as a result of unstable working
conditions, a lack of facilities, and poisonous chemicals released during sewage cleanup. Systems
for real-time health monitoring of such employees will be beneficial. As a safety measure, this real-
time health monitoring device will operate in sewage. In this study, the researchers sought to
develop a device that could measure a person's pulse rate using a pulse oximetry sensor, measure
the levels of ambient oxygen and methane, and inform both the worker and the exterior unit. When
parameters deviate from the safe range. This parameters in real time will promptly alert the workers
to stay safe and detect toxic gases before any harm.

In Paper [3] “Design and Implementation of Prevent Gas Poisoning from Sewage Workers
using Arduino”, authors (N. Umapathi, SaiTeja, Roshini, SaiKiran) claimed that because it is
necessary and cumbersome, sewage system maintenance must be done on a regular basis.
Domestic activities result in the production of organic waste, such as leftover food, moist waste,
and other materials that are flushed down drains. Hazardous gases as CH4, CO, and H2S will
be released as a result of these wastes. The study puts into practice the concept of spotting
dangerous sewage gases, protecting those who operate in sewage systems from gas poisoning.
Their solution uses an Arduino Mega, gas sensors, and a GSM Module to warn the sewage staff.
When the level of hazardous gas reaches the predetermined threshold value, the Arduino sends
an SMS alert to the designated number. The system continuously analyses sewage gases. The
values are shown on LCD displays for those around. Additionally, the device incorporates an
ultrasonic sensor to gauge sewer depth.

7
In Paper [4] “IoT Device for Sewage Gas Monitoring and Alert System”, authors (Nitin Asthana,
Ridhima Bahl) Points at furnishing smart results to cover toxic sewage feasts and workshop on a
system of live sewage position discovery and monitoring. Whenever, a certain threshold is crossed,
an alert is transferred to the bystander who's examining the conditions from a remote position. The
information is also encouraged along with different gas ppm values indicating whether it's safe for
the worker to clean or work in that terrain or not. The ever placed IoT covering outfit and IoT
platform are integrated to produce proposed system. This requires estimation of gas detectors for
artificial purposes and determining the correct threshold situations for septic shops and
installations. The tackle is designed similar that it shall shoot a previous alert to the sewage worker
to in sure their safety, if damaging gassy ingredients increase in attention over time. colorful types
of detectors are employed to cover parameters present in sewage like gas, temperature etc. When
the threshold value is lower than the tasted values, this system cautions the sewage worker/ cleanser
by transferring SMS and call cautions by assaying attention of different poisonous feasts and
graphing out their results for real- time monitoring thereby abetting in protection from dangerous
conditions and hence serves a social cause as well. In the proposed system, sample values for
detectors have been recorded and colluded on ThingSpeak analysis tool. Carbon monoxide and
methane detectors charted values up- to2.3 and 60 ppm independently, and this traduced threshold
and GSM module was employed for transferring alert to mobile number fed in the law.

In Paper [5] “Toxic environment monitoring using sensors based on Arduino”, authors(
R.Rajalakshmi, J.Vidhya) stated that people currently are grandiose by dangerous terrain. poisonous
pollution corrupted in water, soil, and air is dangerous or toxic. It includes plant made wastes like
poisonous heavy essence from mining or chemicals from manufactories, and also sewage and
particulates from power shops. impurity comes in numerous forms, and it infects people else,
sometimes in ways that may not be incontinently conspicuous. This system is made for people
safety operations. This paper aimed to covering poisonous feasts in injurious environmental
conditions for safety operations grounded on Wi- Fi. The proposed system is to cover dangerous
feasts like Carbon Monoxide, Methane, Hydrogen, ignitable feasts using detectors. When the
criterion position go beyond the threshold limit an alert communication will be transferred to
stoner.

8
In Paper [6] “Design of Sewage Treatment Monitoring System Based on Internet of Things”,
authors (Chunbo Xiu1, Liying Dong1) stated that a sewage treatment monitoring system based
on the Internet of Things was developed to increase the effectiveness of industrial wastewater
treatment systems and the inexperienced operation management experience. An application layer,
a network layer, and a sensor layer make up the system. Through a range of sensors and equipment
parts, the sensing layer gathers the parameters of the plant effluent. The gathered data is transferred
to the network layer and linked via GPRS technology through the gateway, processed and saved
using the Baidu cloud platform, and then eventually applied to the actual, where it can be accessed
at any time by the client. It offers a comprehensive approach to running and managing sewage
treatment facilities and is highly reliable in real-world settings.

In Paper [7] “IoT based smart drainage worker safety system”, authors (Pushpakumar R, Rajiv S)
stated that the process of drainage monitoring and maintain plays a big part to keep the municipality
neat and clean. This leads to an informal way of monitoring and drawing the drainage manholes
when it's blocked. The process of freeing and drawing process may lead to important mortal death
because of the gas. also, some of the time because of the absence of information the specialist may
meet to a mishap as they have no suggestion about the state of the gas position in the seepage. This
paper helps to break the problem by a smart device with the help of the IoT. The MQ4 sensor and
the single board computer boo pi 3 helps to descry the gas position with the LED display. This
system will help to identify the gas position inside the drainage manholes so that theworker can get
some idea of entering into the manholes. It truly helps workers and safety to them before getting
down into the manholes and it will smell the position of the gas inside. smart framewill be checking
if the blockage has happened in the middle of two sewer reflections and likewise it will descry
different gas position which is hurtful to individualities, and likewise a frame observing the water
position also it will spark an alert and it will offer data to the extremity division and good services
which will make specific move at time.

In Paper [8] “Web-based real-time underground drainage or sewage monitoring system using
Wireless Sensor Networks”, authors (Navin G Haswani, Pramod J Deore) According to the
statement, drainage is the system or process by which water, sewage, or other liquids are drained
from a location, and in order to ensure drainage's correct operation, its status should be regularly
monitored. However, it is quite challenging to manually keep an eye on every location that a human
cannot access. This affects the clogging of underground pipelines, and water overflows result in
health issues. We created and constructed a solution employing a wireless sensor network to
address all of these problems. It is made up of tiny devices that are used to gather data. These
sensors are referred to as nodes. The suggested system updates the municipal officer via text
message when any manhole reaches the threshold value and is low cost, low maintenance, long
lasting, and web-based. The health problems of the populace and the workers who clean the
subterranean drainage are directly impacted by this system. Additionally, it provides a clean and
healthy environment, prevents the transmission of infection brought on by mosquitoes, and
manages diseases like malaria, dengue fever, diarrhoea, etc. The device lessens accidents brought
on by manholes that are left uncovered.

In Paper [9] “Measurement and Control System of Sewage Treatment Based on Wireless

Sensor Networks”, authors (Jingwen Tian1,2, Hao Wu2, Meijuan Gao1,2) noted that the expansion
of the global industry has increased the need of sewage treatment. But the sewage farm's
unfavorable atmosphere causes a number of issues for the wireless system. In this research, a
measurement and control system using a wireless mesh network is created to address the issue. In
this control system, we developed a sensor node based on the AT89C2051 and nRF2401 that can
gather the necessary local data to finish sewage treatment and monitor the machine's power to
prevent accidents in the absence of a cable. The results of the experiments demonstrate that this
measurement and control system is capable of automating the sewage treatment process, has good
system performance, and offers worker convenience monitoring.

10
In Paper [10] “Smart safety monitoring system for sewage workers with two way
Communication”, authors (Sudhanshu Kumar', Saket Kumar², P.M. Tiwari³, Rajkumar Viral)
claimed that a significant number of sanitation employees pass away every year as a result of
unpredictable conditions, a lack of facilities, and dangerous toxic gases released during sewage
cleaning. Systems for real-time health monitoring of such employees will be beneficial. As a
safety measure, this real-time health monitoring device will operate in sewage. The gadget
described in this study will keep track of a person's pulse rate using a pulse oximetry sensor, as
well as the levels of ambient oxygen and methane, and it will inform the worker and an exterior
unit when a problem arises. when values depart from the acceptable range. Real-time alerts from
these criteria will help the workforce stay safe and identify dangerous gases before any harm is
done.

the administration in gathering precise information about the number of harmful gases present in
the sewage, if any. At some point, the system will notify him/her of any threat to the employees.
The smart device can be put into operation anywhere in the world and aids in monitoring sewage
water overflows.

The future work might be implemented as an Android application that connects to a smart safety
device and notifies the user of any of the aforementioned dangers. The worker's location might also
be included in the message. With the use of AI/ML, the data that is continuously preserved in the
cloud can also be utilized to create datasets that can be used to predict mishaps of this nature.
