RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS:

- A rational expression in one variable is an expression that can be written in
P
the form of Q , where P∧Q are Polynomials . Remember , Q ≠ 0.

DOMAIN:
- is the set of all possible values of the variable that are allowed
- restriction values can make a rational expression undefined.
EXAMPLE: (SIMPLIFYING)
GCF = 3
6 x+12 3(2 x+ 4)
1. ¿ =2 x+ 4
3 3

GCF = 4

a−b 2−3 2−3 −1

(a=1) (b=3)
2 a−b (2 ( 1 )−3) 2−3 −1 1
3. a−b ¿ 1−3 = 1−3 = −2 = 2

SOLVE:
If (a=1) (b=2), If (a=1) (b=2),
2a 2 a−b
1. b 2 2. 3 ab

If (x=2), If (x=3),

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC

EXPRESSIONS: (LIKE DENOMINATORS)

How do we add and substract similar fractions?

- Add or Subtract the numerator then copy the common denominator
- Simplify, if possible.
Example:

2 1 3 4 2 2 1
1.) 4 + 4 = 4 2.) 6 − 6 = 6 = 3

3 1 4 3d 2d d
3.) 5 + 5 = 5 4.) 8
− =

3.) 3 x −5 − 3 x−5 4.) 5 a−3 − 5 a−3

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC

EXPRESSIONS: (UNLIKE DENOMINATORS)

How do we add and substract dissimilar fractions?

- Find the LCD
- Solve for the numerator and simplify.
- Use butterfly method
Example:

2 1 12−2 10 5
1.) 2 − 6 = 12 = 12 = 6

2 1 8+2 10 5 1
2.) 2 + 4 = 8 = 8 = 4 ∨1 4

How do we add and substract rational expression with unlike denominators?

- Factor the denominator completely (get the highest degree)
- Find the LCD
- Write the equivalent expression of each rational expression using LCD.
- Add or subtract the numerators and keep the LCD.
Example:
awd

MULTIPLICATION OF RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS:

How do multiply fractions?

- Multiply the numerators and denominators.
