1.1 Product Overview
The 2N14MX NMEA buffer is suitable for connecting two inputs with automatic or
manual switching functions. The system will automatically switch to input 2 if
input 1 is missing. It is able to switch the input to the second port by connecting
an optional selector switch to port 0 in NMEA buffer mode. It is able to use an
NMEA multiplexer function with 3 inputs by arranging the jumpers and DIP switch
selection.

The input and output baud rates are able to be set to 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600,
19200, 38400, 57600, or 115200 by dip switch selection.

Through the OTA application, the 2N14MX hardware can be programmed to use
different hardware functions.

In the NMEA buffer mode, the DIP switch number 1 should place in the OFF
position and the four jumpers are set to the NORMAL marked side. Ref Image 1.

It is required to select the jumper set along with the DIP switch 1 to operate the
NMEA buffer mode and NMEA multiplexer mode in the proper way.

As shown in image 2, all of the jumpers should be placed in the NORMAL marked
position while the system is used in the NMEA buffer mode.

3 Baud rate selection
3.1 DIP switch numbers 3,4,5 are for the input NMEA baud rate selection and
DIP switch numbers 5,6,7 are for the output NMEA baud rate selection. Refer to
Figure 4. The 2N14MX can be used as a baud rate converter across the range of
1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, and 115200 by setting up input
and output baud rate DIP switches.

The baud rate can be set by referring to the input and output baud rate tables.
power cycle or press the reset switch on the device when a change in the dip
switch selection is applied.

In the NMEA multiplexer mode, the DIP switch number 1 should place in the ON
position and the four jumpers are set to the MUX marked side. Ref Image 5.

It is required to select the jumper set along with the DIP switch 1 to operate the
NMEA buffer mode and NMEA multiplexer mode in the proper way.

As shown in image 5, all of the jumpers should be placed in the MUX marked
position while the system is used in the NMEA multiplexer mode.

3 Opto-isolated NMEA 0183 data inputs. Full galvanic Opto-isolated differential

inputs that fully comply with the NMEA 0183 standard specification. This allows
the input to work correctly with long cable runs, and/or in a noisy environment.
This also allows the NDC-4 to offer up to 2500v of common mode voltage
difference (between its input and outputs). This will prevent any ground loop
damage occurring. Inputs 1 and 2 have independently selectable baud rates of
1200 to 115200 baud; Input 0 is fixed at 4800 baud.
The USB port baud rate will be the same as the port 2 baud rate.

5 USB port function
5.1 PC interface and USB driver update
The processed data will be available through the USB-B type port. The baud
rate of the USB-B type port and input port 1 will be the same.

The PC required a valid internet connection to update the system program. To

detect 2N14MX in Windows, a PROLIFIC USB DRIVER is required.

6.1 Protection
The system is designed to prevent reverse polarity protection, and PTC self-
resettable fuse protection is included.

6.2 Isolation

The system is designed with DC input power isolation and opto-isolation for input
channels. The driver outputs utilize 3-state circuitry to provide high-impedance
states at any pair of differential outputs when the appropriate output enable is at
a low logic level. Internal circuitry is provided to ensure a high-impedance state at
the differential outputs during power-up and power-down transition times,
providing the output enable is low.
