Objectives
1. Study the voltage-current relationships of series and parallel circuits.
2. Verify the voltage and current divider rules.
Materials Needed
DC power supply
Multimeter
Assorted resistors
Procedure
Simulation on Multisim
1. Build Circuit 1 (Figure 3):
o Open Multisim and place the resistors (R2_ R3 _R4, R5_R6) in the configuration
shown in Figure 3.
o Connect the power source Vs and set it to the required voltage.
o Place voltmeters across each resistor and ammeters in series to measure individual
currents I2_ I3_I4_ I5 and I6.
2. Measure Voltages and Currents:
o Turn on the simulation.
o Record voltage and current readings for each resistor in Table 1. This will help in
verifying the voltage and current divider rules.
3. Measure Total Resistance Req:
o Stop the simulation and disconnect the voltage source.
o Connect an ohmmeter (or multimeter set to measure resistance) across the circuit
to find the total equivalent resistance Req without the power supply connected.
o Record this value in Table 1.
Hardwired Experiment
5. Build Circuit 1 (Figure 3) with Physical Components:
o Using the same resistor values, build the physical circuit according to Figure 3.
o Use a multimeter to measure voltages across each resistor and the current through
each branch.
o Measure Req by disconnecting the power supply and measuring the resistance of
the entire circuit.
o Record your measurements in Table 1, and calculate the percentage error
compared to the Multisim simulation values.
6. Build Circuit 2 (Figure 4) with Physical Components:
o Repeat the setup with the configuration shown in Figure 4.
o Record all measured values in Table 2, and compute the percentage error based on
the Multisim simulation results.
Analysis
1. Voltage Divider Verification: Compare the voltage measurements to the expected
values based on the voltage divider rule for each resistor.
2. Current Divider Verification: Verify that the current distribution in parallel branches
follows the current divider rule.
3. Calculate Percentage Error: Use the formula:
