LINEAR MEASURE

Millimeter and centimeter are used to measure small objects. Meter and kilometer are used to
measure longer lengths and distances. Meter is the basic unit of length in the metric system.
Study the table below.
Metric Units of Length
10 millimeters (mm) = 1 centimeter
10 centimeters (cm) = 1 decimeter
10 decimeters (dm) = 1 meter
10 meters (m) = 1 decameter
10 decameters (dam) = 1 hectometer
10 hectometers (hm) = 1 kilometer (km)
Examples:
A. Multiply to change a larger unit to a smaller unit. B. Divide to change a smaller unit to a larger unit.

1) 6 cm = mm 1) 20 cm = dm

1 cm = 10 mm 1 dm = 10 cm

6 x 10 = 60 mm 20 cm ÷10 cm = 2 dm

6 cm = 60 mm 20 cm = 2 dm

2) 4 km = m 2) 680 cm = m

1 km = 1000 m 1 m = 100 cm

4 x 1,000 = 4,000 m 680 cm ÷ 100 cm = 6.8 m

4 km = 4,000 m 680 cm = 6.8 m

3) 2.5 m = cm 3) 23500 m = km

1 m = 100 cm 1km = 1 000 m

2.5 x 100 = 250 cm 23 500 m ÷1 000 m = 23.5 km

2.5 = 250 cm 23 500 m = 23.5 km

4) 6.18 dm = m 4) 120 mm = m

1dm = 10m 1m = 1000 mm

6.18 x 10 = 61.8 m 120 mm ÷ 1000 mm = 0.12 m

6.18 dm = 61.9 m 120 mm = 0.12 m
