Jen: Be careful! You mustn’t lift those weights like that!
Alex: I’m sorry, I’m new at this. Can you help me?
Jen: Of course, that’s my job. I’m a trainer here. What’s your name?
Alex: Alex.
Jen: Hi, Alex. I’m Jen. So, why are you here? What’s your goal?
Alex: Well, I’m hoping to get a body like Justin Bieber’s …
Jen: Hmm … That’s quite a goal!
Alex: No, I’m joking. I just want to exercise more, but I’m not sure how.
Jen: First time at the gym, eh? Very courageous! You should be proud of yourself! OK, so this is what I suggest for today.
Start with walking or running – something to get your heart rate up for at least 15 minutes. Then work on your arms and
shoulders. It’s best to divide your workout by days. On day one, work on your upper body: shoulders, arms and back.
Rest on day two and then on day three, work on your lower body: legs, knees and ankles. Understood?
Alex: Uhh … yes.
Jen: Good. Now, the most important thing in weight lifting is good technique! You don’t want to hurt yourself. You need to
work as safely as possible. I’ll stay with you today so I’ll be able to show you exactly what to do.
Alex: What about food?
Jen: Good question! You must eat sensibly. No junk food! Drinking water is very important, too. Before working out, you can
have something small, like wholemeal bread or fresh fruit. You shouldn’t eat anything with a lot of calories or fat. After
the workout, you may feel hungry. Then you need to eat something with protein, like fish or cheese. And of course, lots
of vegetables for the vitamins.
Alex: Thank you. I already feel better than before.
Jen: Ha, ha. You haven’t started yet! If you exercise regularly three or four days a week and follow a healthy diet, you’ll feel
better than ever in six weeks from now. So let’s get started!
