1 Introduction
1.1 Information on retaking International GCSEs
Candidates wishing to retake an International GCSE are required to retake all written units in the
qualification. All non-examined assessment results can be carried forward from a previous series
provided the relevant transferred entry option is selected when making the entry.

2 Entry procedures and key dates

2.1 Entry procedures

2.2 Private candidates

Private candidates are candidates taking a qualification without being enrolled full time in a centre.
They are responsible for their own entries, which must be made through an approved centre. Some
qualifications are not available to private candidates. For a full list of qualifications and private
candidate eligibility see our website.

2.3 Fees
Information about fees can be found here.

2.4 Entry deadlines and results

Please see the Key Dates section of this manual for entry and results dates, and the certification and
centre mark submission dates. The Key Dates section also includes details of when EDI basedata and
Edexcel Online are available for the submission of entries.

2.5 Retention of certificates

It is no longer necessary to return uncollected certificates to us. They may be destroyed (in a
confidential manner) after retention for a period of no less than 12 months from the date of issue.
Centres that do not have a means of destroying certificates confidentially may return them to our
Manchester office. A record of certificates that have been destroyed should be retained for four years
from their date of destruction. Centres must comply with any request from us to return a certificate.
Certificates remain the property of the awarding bodies at all times.

2.6 Option codes

Regional paper ('R' papers)
Customers whose centres are based in specified countries must use alternative option codes, where
applicable, as listed in this manual (for example, 4BI1 R). Pearson requires the following countries to
use the alternative option codes: Australia, Azerbaijan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India,
Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Oman, Pakistan,
Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.
The January 2023 series was the final January series available for International GCSE.  
The new November series will not require R papers. Instead, exams in this series will predominantly be
scheduled in the AM slot (GMT) to ensure that centres can run exams at reasonable local times.
Onscreen option
The following International GCSEs may be sat onscreen: Business, Economics, English Language
Specification A, English Literature, Global Citizenship, History, Islamic Studies and Pakistan Studies.
Centres must request approval to offer the onscreen option. The onscreen options have ‘C’ codes.
Centres requiring regional papers and using the onscreen option use 'V' option code.
Modular option
The following International GCSEs are available as modular qualifications to international centres
only: Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Commerce, Economics, English Language Specification A, English
Literature, Geography, History, Mathematics Specification A, Physics, Religious Studies and Science
Double Award.
