MODULE OUTCOMES
At the end of this module students are expected to:

∙ Understand concepts and quantities of electrostatics and electrodynamics.

∙ Apply electrostatics and electrodynamics laws and use vectors, scalars and formulae to solve problems
∙ Calculate and analyse electric circuits quantities
∙ Understand the applications and limitations of different sources of light Understand concepts and quantities of
geometrical optics ∙ Apply geometrical optics laws to solve optics problems
∙ Calculate quantities and analyse image characteristics formed by mirrors, lenses and the human eye
∙ Understand the optical eye defects and calculate quantities and analyse the optical defects formed in the
human eye

MODULE CONTENT
This module focuses on:
Electricity
Electrodynamics, electric charges and forces, static charges and electric fields, electric
potentials, electric energy and capacitance, dielectric materials, moving charges and
magnetic forces, steady electric and magnetic field, magnetic energy and inductance.
Electronics, resistors, capacitors and inductors, power sources direct and alternate current
circuits.

Optics
Nature and propagation of light, refraction and reflection, Image formation by lenses and
mirrors, Optical instrument, the eye, interference, polarization. Early models of the atom,
photo electric effect, X-rays, lasers and nuclear physics.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
At the end of the module the student will be assessed on:

∙ Define and explain electrostatics and electrodynamics concepts, quantities and laws.
∙ Convert electrostatic and electrodynamics quantities into scientific and prefix notations taking into account
significant figures.
∙ Describe and solve electrostatics and electrodynamics problems using vectors and scalar algebra
∙ Discuss and apply electrostatics and electrodynamics concepts and laws in electric circuits

∙ Explain the nature, properties and sources of light

∙ Discuss and explain geometrical optics concepts, quantities and laws.
∙ Describe and solve geometrical optics problems related to images formed by mirrors and lenses
∙ Analyse images formed by mirrors and lenses and apply them to everyday situations.
∙ Describe and solve problems related to the optics of the human eye. Define and explain optical eye defects and
how to correct them. ∙ Describe and solve problems related to the correction of optical defects of the human eye.

STUDENT FEEDBACK ON MODULE

Students will be allowed to give a feedback on this module via either Centre for Academic Excellence or the School
approved Module Evaluation Form (questionnaire) at the end of the year. The data from the questionnaires is
collated and used systematically to assure; enhance and improve the quality of teaching the module.
MODULE POLICY (Including plagiarism, academic honesty, attendance etc.)
• Copying is not allowed in the University system and anybody caught copying during test and assignments will be
referred to the Director’s office. Failure to acknowledge source of information or copying verbatim is an academic
crime and is also against University policy, and as such can lend one for disciplinary hearing and be charged.
• A minimum of 75% lecture and practical attendance is compulsory to be admitted to sit for the examination..
• A minimum of 40% practical mark is required to qualify to sit for examination.
