Intended learners: Grade 10 students

Focus of the activity: Reading

Topic: New ways to learn, Unit: 8, Textbook: Global Success 10

Version A: For higher proficiency students

Online distance learning is an instructional system which connects learners with

educational resources. Students can work on their own at home, at work, or at school
and communicate with faculty and other students via email, electronic forums,
videoconferencing, chat rooms, bulletin boards, instant messaging and other forms of
computer-based communication. There are both advantages and disadvantages to
online distance learning.

There are many benefits to using online distance learning environments. Online
education is available all the time. However there are drawbacks for some learners.
The online learner may confuse the learner and cause misunderstanding. While
distance learning allows for openness, it is also cumbersome because it is done by e-
mail messages and writing and therefore may take more time. The sheer bulk of
messages can sometimes be overwhelming for many online students.

Universities and Colleges use virtual online distance learning environments. These are
important for students who may be unable to attend classes for various reasons like
illnesses or busy everyday schedules. Some learners just want to further their studies
at home. They enjoy the convenience of home learning as they take regular programs
or enrichment classes.

Online courses keep learners very occupied at all hours, with a great deal of messages
and resources to read and respond to. Most learners have regular jobs or attend regular
school classes on ground as well. However, the benefits are clear. Online distance
learning is becoming very popular. Some virtual online classes have become a
profitable business as they replace regular traditional means of learning.

Version A: For lower proficiency students

Online distance learning is a way of teaching that connects students to educational
materials using the internet. Students can talk to teachers and classmates. There are
good and bad aspects to online distance learning.

One advantage of online education is that it's available all the time and can be
accessed from anywhere. However, there are many challenges for some learners.
Online students only have written text and don't get to see each other’s facial
expressions, which can be confusing. Although distance learning is flexible, it can
also be difficult because it relies on emails and writing, making it slower than in-
person learning. The amount of messages can be overwhelming for many online
students.

Schools use virtual online distance learning environments. These are important for
students who may be unable to attend classes for various reasons like illnesses or busy
everyday schedules. Some learners just want to further their studies at home. They
enjoy the convenience of home learning as they take regular classes

Online courses keep students busy. There are many messages and other online
resources to read and respond to. Most learners have jobs or attend regular classes in
person. Despite these challenges, online distance learning is becoming very popular.

Note:

* : students can answer this question by reading the given text

Rationale:
The designed task is a bias text activity for grade 10 students. Its aim is to promote the
language proficiency and reading skill of both strong and weak students in the class.
The text is modified into two versions A (for higher students) and B (for lower
students). The length of version A is shorter than version B with 201 and 252 words
respectively. The linguistic load is different between these two. Firstly, more complex
lexical items are used in version A than version B. For example, in version A contains
less complex items “a way of teaching”(A2), “talk”(A1), “advantages and
disadvantages”(B1), “difficult”(A1); while in version B we use “instructional
system”(B1), “communicate”(B1), “good and bad aspects”(B2), “cumbersome”(B2).
In addition, the sentence structures in Version B are more complex than version A.
For instance, “Online courses keep learners very occupied at all hours, with a great
deal of messages and resources to read and respond to” and “Online courses keep
students busy. There are many messages and other online resources to read and
respond to” in version A. As for the cognitive load, we have modified some
information so that if students want to answer question 3, it is implicit in version B as
we have to infer that online learning can be accessed from anywhere based on the
sentence “Students can work on their own at home, at work, or at school” and is
explicit in version A as in “it's available all the time and can be accessed from
anywhere”. Both of the versions have the same questions. For questions, students can
only answer the question as summarized table 2 then they will perform a collaboration
to complete each other's result and give student-student feedback.
