Course Description:
This course is a Chinese basic course designed for overseas students
of absolute beginners. The course concentrates on all aspects of Chinese
phonetic knowledge,practice and exercises in the first lesson with a brief
introduction of the standard Chinese language as well as the learning of
Chinese pronunciation through pinyin Romanization. It is designed
mainly for the benefit of beginners. The course will first begin with
Chinese Phonetics. Syllable is the basic unit of Chinese phonetics.
Chinese syllables are combined of initials, finals and tones.
Students learning Chinese as a foreign language have more
difficulties in the pronunciation of vowels and consonants ,in tones and
intonation. so the student will first learn the Pinyin part, including
initials , finals and tones, which is the basic part for learning Chinese.
Secondly, you will learn some basic grammar. Sentences structure, tense,
question sentences will be covered in this part. and you will learn several
hundred of new words as well. Meanwhile, this course also combines

those functional topics with a focus on the subjects of international
business,daily routines and activities for business purposes.

Aims and Objectives:


Any economic and commercial transaction between China and a
foreign country may be viewed as cross-cultural activities in nature. The
removal of language barriers and difficulties that lie in the understanding
of the culture, subtle points and principles expressed by a target language
will be greatly beneficial for one's commercial success. It is advisable,
therefore, or foreigners to acquire the following abilities through learning
business Chinese course:
(1) Basic Chinese knowledge and skills that is applicable to one's
commercial activities;
(2) Communicative ability appropriate to Chinese environment 一 be
able to understand the essentials of Chinese economic circumstances and
rules for business performance, including trade, investment, cooperation
and management of enterprises;
(3) Competence for cross-cultural communication in the context of
economic and coopera-true interchange 一 a wide range of knowledge of
business custom and rules in addition to the background information of
Chinese culture.

Learning Outcomes:

Therefore it seems appropriate to know the teaching of business


Chinese combines the language as a carrier with commercial activities
and cross-cultural knowledge.On completion of the course, a student
should be able to know the pronunciation of Chinese initials, finals and
tones. to master 600 vocabulary, to understand simple conversations,
classroom language,and the basic grammar. After that, such skills to be
used in language communication may be provided at four levels in an
ascending order:
(1) Ability to use appropriate expressions on polite social occasion of
reception, greeting, introduction, apology and congratulation.
(2) Ability to use appropriate expressions for shopping, traveling, bus

riding, telephoning and appointment making.
(3) Ability to use appropriate expressions for commercial activities
such as giving a brief account of a company or product, getting or giving
a quotation, comment or statement.
(4) Ability to use appropriate expressions in consulting, negotiating,
bargaining, writing or revising a plan, discussing a way to cooperate,
making a comment on a subject in addition to analyzing and sorting out
problems.

Teaching Methods:
The teacher will mainly develop four skills in Chinese, including
speaking, listening, reading and writing on daily life topics. And it
specially focuses on Pronunciation and Chinese grammar. The teaching
process throughout the book is student-centered. Students are required to
accomplish both the in-class and the af-ter-class activities before they
proceed. The teacher plays a role as a facilitator, participator, guide and
organizer of class and business setting activities. Students are very much
involved to real worldbusiness situations and business settings and thus
being able to learn and even master business Chinese that once seems so
impossible for beginners.Teaching methods will involve

4、Experiential learning

Final Examination 60%
Middle Examination( Pinyin Examination) 20%
Attendance and dictation 20%
Total 100%

To achieve a pass grade in this course, students must obtain 60% or more
as an aggregate mark on the assessment.

(1) Class participation and performance, and assignment 20%


This evaluates your preparedness, participation, skit and attendance.
Unexcused absences are allowed twice. If you are going to be absent,
please e-mail me prior to the absence. Students with an approved absence
may make up the absence by writing 10 newly learned characters or 5
sentences. Normally, no more than 2 absences are accepted (exceptions

may be made by the instructor in extenuating circumstances). 1 point will
be subtracted for each absence.
(2) Mid-term Test 20%
Midterm Test focuses on Pinyin part.
(3) Examination content(100Minutes) 60%
The examination is designed to check you ability of writing Chinese
character, making sentences, Construct sentences, and writing a short
assay.
