Tile Calculation Process

This document explains the process of calculating the number of tiles needed to cover a
specific floor area using the CalculateTotalTilesNeeded formula. This method considers
both full tiles and partial tiles to cover the entire area, along with grout spacing
adjustments. The calculation is essential for AR applications where users visualize tile
layouts on a given floor space.

Key Measurements and Variables

1. Area of Floor: Detected by AR, measured in square meters (m²).
- Width: The width of the floor area in meters.
- Height: The height of the floor area in meters.

2. Tile Size: Selected by the user, with common options like 30x30 cm, 40x40 cm, and 60x60
cm, converted to meters:
- 30x30 cm → 0.3 m x 0.3 m
- 40x40 cm → 0.4 m x 0.4 m
- 60x60 cm → 0.6 m x 0.6 m

3. Grout Width: The space between tiles, adjusted based on the tile size.
- For 40x40 cm tiles, grout width is approximately 4-5 mm (0.004-0.005 m).

4. Effective Tile Size: Tile size plus grout width, used to calculate how many tiles fit along
each dimension.

Steps in the Calculation

1. Calculate Floor Area
- Area of Floor = Width × Height

2. Calculate Tile Area

- Each tile's area is calculated as:
Tile Area = (Tile Length + Grout Width) × (Tile Width + Grout Width)

3. Calculate Full Tiles Needed

- Full Tiles X = Width / Effective Tile Size
- Full Tiles Y = Height / Effective Tile Size
- Total Full Tiles = Full Tiles X × Full Tiles Y

4. Calculate Partial Tiles

- Determine if extra tiles are needed along edges:
- Partial Width: Remaining width after full tiles.
- Partial Height: Remaining height after full tiles.
5. Add Extra Tiles for Corners
- If there is remainder in both width and height, add an extra tile for the corner.

Example Calculation with 40x40 cm Tiles

Assume the detected floor dimensions are 1.2 meters by 2 meters:
1. Convert Tile Size: 40 cm = 0.4 m
2. Effective Tile Size (with grout) ≈ 0.4 m + 0.005 m = 0.405 m
3. Full Tiles Calculation:
- Full Tiles X = 1.2 / 0.405 ≈ 2
- Full Tiles Y = 2.0 / 0.405 ≈ 4
4. Total Full Tiles = 2 × 4 = 8
5. Partial Tiles:
- Partial Width = 1.2 mod 0.405 ≈ 0.39 m
- Partial Height = 2.0 mod 0.405 ≈ 0.385 m
