Tutorial 7

1. A 64,000 – byte message is to be transmitted from the source to the destination as shown in
the figure below. The network limits frames to a maximum size of two thousand bytes, and
each frame has a 32-byte header. The transmission line has a bit error rate of 10-6, and a Stop-
and-Wait ARQ is used. How long does it take on average to get the message from the source
to the destination? Assume that the signal propagates at a speed of 2x105 km/s, and that the
ACK error, ACK time, and processing time are negligible. (For the ease of calculation, you
may assume the last frame is padded with zeros to the maximum frame size.)

2. Consider a system where A uses a Stop-&-Wait ARQ to send a message of N frames to B.

If a frame reaches B correctly with probability P and the ACKs are considered to be error-free,
what will be the average number of frame transmissions that A will have to make to
successfully send all the N frames to B?

What will be the result if we now assume that ACKs can also be in error with PA as the
probability that B’s ACK correctly reaches A.

(Ans: N/P, N/(PPA))
