CA3 Feedback & Assessment

CA3 is worth 20% of your Final CA mark. You’ll receive individual feedback about the
speaking activity in TASK 3.2. See Appendix 1 for the marking criteria for CA3.

In order to pass Continuous Assessment, you must participate in the tasks in all six CAs.
CA3 Dedicated Foodies

Important: All work you submit for this course must be original. Do not copy-paste from the
web or other sources - your contribution must be written in your own words. Any material
taken from another source must be credited. For more information, see:
http://cv.uoc.edu/adf/~s_eao_0005_u01/plagiarism_IM.htm

Pre-task 3.1 13/03/18 - 15/03/18

1. Dedicated Foodies Part 1 self-correcting exercises

Do the exercises in Dedicated Foodies > Part 1 Food TV in Materials in the classroom.
They’ll help you widen your vocabulary, revise grammar areas and you’ll read and
listen to ideas about the topic in the assessed task.

Don’t forget to share different vocabulary items, expressions and grammar points
that you have learnt in the I’ve learnt something today! folder in the Forum.

2. Group Dynamic

The most successful groups create a strong collaborative relationship with each other from
the start, so get into your group space as soon as possible and begin interacting. You could:

● write a 'good work group' contract

● create a calendar of group tasks and/or availability

● put pictures on your Group Wikispace Home page to give

a visual identity for your group

● agree where you will interact; either in the Group Discussion or in the Group
Wikispace

NB: Remember, all main communication with your group must take place in the work group
spaces. If you use other communication channels, your teacher cannot help you effectively.

3. Brainstorming for TASK 3.1

Choose a TV programme about food or restaurants to write about and then tell your
groupmates which programme you’ve chosen and why. Avoid reviewing the same
programme. If you don’t know a programme or don’t watch TV, you can find a programme
by checking the TV listings or by searching on websites like YouTube.

TASK 3.1 Food TV critics needed! 16/03/18 - 21/03/18

You see this announcement on a weekly online TV Guide:

Tasty reviews wanted!

Have you noticed all of the programmes related to food or restaurants on TV nowadays? Tell
us about one of these programmes! Write us a review of 150-200 words on the TV
programme about food or restaurants. In your review you need to:

● give examples of the show’s content

● say what the objective of the programme is
● why you love or hate the programme
● give the review a catchy title

The best reviews will be published on our webpage!

You can find an example and ‘ingredients’ (verb tense, adjectives, etc.) for writing a Review
in the self-correcting exercises Dedicated Foodies (Part 1) > 01.04 Writing. Use the
Writing_Checklist in the classroom to revise your work. When you finish, send your Review
to the Forum > CA3 Reviews folder.

Post-task 3.1 20/03/18 - 21/03/18

As you know, good writers learn from others so read some (at least two) of your classmates’
reviews and think about them carefully as you read.

Think of a question to ask the writer (e.g. to clarify something they wrote) and also write
something about some (or all) of the following:

● Have you seen any/some/all of the programmes reviewed?

● Do you agree with the other writers’ opinions?
● If you’ve never watched the programme(s), would you? Why/why not?

See Appendix 2 for examples of how to reply.

CA3 Dedicated Foodies

Listening 1 22/03/18 - 05/04/18

You’ll do two Listening Comprehension exercises this semester. Listening 1 is just for
practice. Click on Listening 1 in your classroom and do the comprehension exercises there.
Your mark will be available after the deadline.

Pre-task 3.2 22/03/18 - 24/03/18

1. Dedicated Foodies Part 2 self-correcting exercises

Do the exercises in Dedicated Foodies Part 2 > Alternative Foods in Materials in the
classroom. They’ll help you widen your vocabulary, revise grammar areas and you’ll read
and listen to ideas about the topic in the assessed task.

Don’t forget to share different vocabulary items, expressions and grammar

points that you have learnt in the I’ve learnt something today! folder.

2. Pair work speaking examples

You’ll do a pair work speaking with a groupmate for TASK 3.2. To appreciate what you need
to do go to Langblog > Tandem examples and listen to students doing pair work speaking.
Then, follow the instructions posted to the Notice board by your teacher.

3. Prepare for pair work speaking

Download Skype and a Skype recorder. For more information see Skype Information in the
classroom. Then write to your Group Discussion area to find a partner for the speaking
activity. Once you have a partner, agree on a day and time to meet on Skype and exchange
Skype usernames.

TASK 3.2 Dedicated Foodies! 25/03/18 - 05/04/18

Before you do TASK 3.2 with your partner in Tandem, do the self-correcting exercises in
Dedicated Foodies Part 2 > Communication Strategies.

You’ll do two Tandems: CA3 Practice and CA3 Assessed.

Meet your partner on Skype at the time you agreed and go to Tandem in
the classroom. Start with CA3 Practice. Record your conversation and
check your recorder works correctly but don’t send the file to the classroom.

Now do CA3 Assessed in Tandem. Record Tasks 1 and 2 in one audio file; then start a new
recording and record Tasks 3 and 4. Decide together which task you want your teacher to
assess - Task 3 or Task 4.

One of you must send both audio recordings for CA3 Assessed to the Forum >
CA3_Skype_Recordings. In your message, tell your teacher whether you want them to
assess Task 3 or Task 4. Include your names in the file title like this:
Tasks_3_and_4_joangrau_anaflor.mp3

Note the following general advice for pair work speaking tasks:

Pair work speaking tips!

● Both partners should record each task in separate audio recordings with a Skype
recorder. For more details, see Skype Information in the classroom.
● It is your responsibility to check the quality of the recordings sent to the classroom
Forum and to repeat the assessed activity if necessary.
● Your teacher will assess how well you and your partner speak together naturally so
don’t over-prepare or read from a prepared script.
● Say your names at the start of each recording to help identify the speaker.
● Tandem only works when both students are connected. One student must "invite"
the other student to do the activity so first decide who will "invite". To invite your
partner, find your partner's name in dropdown menu 1; select the task in dropdown
menu 2 and click start. Your partner will receive the "invitation" and must click start.
Tandem will open in a new tab or window in your browser.

You can find more details of how to use Tandem by clicking here and here.

Post-task 3.2 03/04/18 - 05/04/18

1. Error correction

Complete the Error Correction exercise your teacher posts to the classroom. The errors in
this exercise are common errors students often make at this level.

2. Reflect on speaking performance

Share your thoughts about doing the pair work speaking activity with your classmates in I’ve
learnt something today! in the Forum. Think about the following questions:

● Did you feel nervous before/during the pair work speaking?

● How did listening to the pair work speaking examples help you?
● How natural did your recording sound?
● How could you improve?

Appendix 2 Response message example

I really enjoyed reading the Review about ***. I’ve only watched the programme once but I
think I’d watch it again now I know more about it. It’s true that the presenter can be a bit
aggressive at times. I saw her throwing pasta out of the window because it was overcooked
and I didn’t like this.

The review of *** told me a lot but I don’t know which channel it’s broadcast on or what
time. Even if I knew this information, I’m not sure I’d watch it as I usually prefer to watch
how to make dishes than trying to make a restaurant more successful.
