the scooter for the first time. It contains information, tips and precautions for using your scooter. It also describes features, details and devices to assure
you that you have made the right choice. We believe that if you follow our suggestions, you will soon get to know your new vehicle and it will serve you
well for a long time to come. This booklet forms an integral part of the scooter; should the scooter be sold, it must be transferred to the new owner.

The instructions given in this manual are intended to provide a clear, simple guide to using your scooter; details are also given of routine maintenance
procedures and regular checks that should be carried out on the vehicle at an Authorised PIAGGIO Dealer or Service Centre. The booklet also
contains instructions for simple repairs. Any operations not specifically described in this manual require the use of special tools and/or particular technical
knowledge: to carry out these operations refer to any authorised PIAGGIO Dealer or Service Centre.

Analogue instrument panel (01_02)


KEY:
1. Speedometer
The speedometer indicates the motion speed in kilometres per hour.
2. Odometer
Total of covered kilometres. The figure on the right side indicates the number of meters
in hundreds.

4. Temperature indicator
If the indicator is on, the coolant temperature has exceeded 105º C.
5. Turn indicator warning light
6. Oil reserve warning light
This warning light turns on when there is an oil reserve of 0,25 l.

7. Petrol reserve warning light
This warning light turns on when there is a petrol reserve of 1,5 l.

Key switch (01_03)


Key position:
1. Start-up position, steering lock not on, non-extractable key.
2. Ignition disabled, extractable key, steering lock not on.
3. Ignition disabled, extractable key, steering lock on.

Locking the steering wheel (01_04)


01_03 In order to block the steering, turn the handlebar completely to the left or right. Fully
insert the key and let it return to its original position, turn it to position «3» and take it
out.

Releasing the steering wheel (01_05)


Insert the key, press it and turn it clockwise. Pull out the key.

Switch direction indicators (01_06)


To activate the left turn indicator, move the lever «A» leftwards; to activate the right
turn indicator, move the lever rightwards. The lever automatically returns to the central
position and the indicators remain on. To turn off, push the switch.

Push «B» to activate the horn.

rear brake pedal (01_08)
The rear brake control pedal «2» is placed on the right part of the scooter, at engine
level. It must be activated gradually with the toe-end. Combination of the rear and front
brakes must be used, according to the needs: by doing so, braking will be more ef-
fective.
Consider also the conditions of the road! Particularly, if it is wet asphalt or with sand,
oil, etc.

Throttle grip (01_09)


Placed on the right side of the handlebar. When the hand grip «B» is turned towards
the driver, the carburettor valve will be opened.

Front brake control (01_10)


The front brake control «E» is placed on the right side of the handlebar. Be particularly
careful when using the front brake, apply softly and measure the power progressively,
according to surface conditions, to avoid blocking of the wheel.

Gearshift pedal (01_11)

The gear pedal «1» is placed on the left side of the engine. Activate it with your foot
to firmly engage the gear. After the gear is shifted, remove the foot from the pedal and
this will return automatically to its initial position. Starting from the neutral position,
gears are inserted as follows:
- 1st gear is engaged by pressing the pedal downwards.
- 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gears are engaged by pushing the pedal upwards.
For downshifting, pressing the pedal down.

CAUTION
THE GEAR PEDAL MUST BE OPERATED BY RELEASING IT AFTER HAVING
DISENGAGED THE CLUTCH AND REDUCING THE THROTTLE GRIP TO THE
MINIMUM.

Clutch control (01_12)


The lever of the clutch grip «A» is placed on the left side of the handlebar. When it is
pulled completely towards the handlebar, the clutch is disengaged and the engine
transmission is released. If the lever is released slowly, the clutch is engaged coupling
the engine to the transmission which, with a gear engaged, will transmit the engine
power to the rear wheel through the gear.

Light on/of switch (01_13)
The lights switch «C» has two positions:
- Down, low-beam light
- Up, high-beam light
To make this control work, the engine must be started.

Start-up button (01_14)


The kick start pedal «1» is placed on the right side of the engine. To start the engine,
just push the pedal backwards with your foot.
CAUTION
CHECK THE GEAR IS IN THE NEUTRAL POSITION BEFORE STARTING THE
ENGINE.

Manual starter control (01_15)


The carburettor starter control «2» is on the right side of the carburettor so it is easily
reached with the hand on the same side. It has two positions:
- Lever upwards: Starting in cold conditions.
- Lever downwards: Starting in normal conditions.
CAUTION
THE ONLY AIM OF THIS CONTROL IS TO MAKE STARTING EASIER. ONLY USE

Fuel tank (01_16)

The fuel tank has a 7 litre capacity and a 1,30 litre reserve. To fill it, insert the key in
the lock of the tank cover «1» and, while turning it towards the right, lift the cover.
CAUTION
USE UNLEADED PETROL ONLY.

Mixture oil reservoir (01_17)


The oil tank has a 1 litre capacity and a 0,25 litre reserve. Use recommended oil only.

Opening the saddle (01_18, 01_19)


To dismantle the saddle, insert the key in the lock of the tank cover «1» and, while
turning rightwards, lift the cover. After that, dismantle the two nuts of the saddle re-
tainer «2».
The oil tank, the battery and the tool kit compartment are under the saddle.

Keys (01_20)
Two keys are supplied with the scooter, both can be used either for the ignition lock
or the fuel tank cap.
The keys are accompanied by a tag marked with the identification code to be quoted
when ordering duplicates.
WARNING
WE RECOMMEND KEEPING THE DUPLICATE KEY TOGETHER WITH ITS TAG
IN A SAFE PLACE AND NOT ON THE SCOOTER.

Identification (01_21, 01_22)


The identification numbers consist of a prefix stamped on the chassis and on the en-
gine, followed by a number. They must be quoted when ordering spare parts. We
recommend that you check that the prefix and chassis number stamped on the vehicle
correspond with those in the vehicle documents.

ALTERING THE IDENTIFICATION REGISTRATION NUMBERS MAY LEAD TO
SERIOUS PENAL SANCTIONS (IMPOUNDING OF THE SCOOTER, ETC.).

Checks
Before engaging the scooter, check:
1. that the fuel and oil tanks are full.
2. that the crankcase oil level is correct.
3. that the transmission is in neutral position.
4. that the tyres are correctly inflated.
5. that the headlight, rear light and turn indicators are in correct working order.
6. that the front and rear brakes are in working order.
7. that the liquid level in the brake pump tanks are correct.
8. that the transmission chain is tightened and properly lubricated.
9. that the coolant level is correct.
CAUTION

SHUT OFF THE ENGINE BEFORE REFUELLING WITH PETROL. PETROL IS


HIGHLY FLAMMABLE. DO NOT LET PETROL SPILL FROM THE TANK OR WHILE
REFUELLING

Tyre pressure
A different pressure from the one indicated may cause problems when riding the ve-
hicle. Therefore, we recommend checking and correcting tyre pressure frequently.

Running in (02_01)

DURING THE FIRST 1000 KM DO NOT RIDE THE SCOOTER OVER 80% OF ITS
MAX. SPEED. AVOID OPENING THE ACCELERATOR COMPLETELY AND KEEP-
ING A CONSTANT SPEED FOR LONG STRETCHES. AFTER THE FIRST 1000 KM
INCREASE SPEED GRADUALLY UNTIL REACHING MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE.

02_01 - THE DURABILITY AND THE EFFICIENCY OF YOUR SCOOTER DEPEND
STRONGLY ON THE CARE RECEIVED DURING THE RUN-IN PERIOD. DURING

THIS PERIOD, THE MECHANISMS OF THE MOBILE PARTS ARE MUTUALLY
HARDENED AND ADAPTED.
- A BETTER RUN-IN IS OBTAINED NOT BY RIDING SLOWLY BUT SOFTLY AND
CAREFULLY. DURING THIS PERIOD, IT IS ADVISABLE TO RIDE THE VEHICLE
AT 3/4 OF MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE. IN THE EVENT THAT FULL ACCELERA-
TION IS NECESSARY (OVERTAKING MANOEUVRES, STEEP SLOPES, ETC.)
TRY TO LIMIT THE TIME TO A MINIMUM.
- TRANSMISSION OIL MUST BE CHANGED ONCE THE FIRST 1,000 KM ARE
COVERED. USE THE RECOMMENDED OIL TYPE AND SPECIFIED QUANTITY
ONLY. DURING THE FIRST 1,000 KM, A CHECK AND SET UP MUST BE DONE
IN AN AUTHORISED PIAGGIO-GILERA SERVICE CENTRE.

TO OBTAIN OPTIMUM ADJUSTMENT OF MOBILE PARTS, A LONG LIFE AND


BETTER PERFORMANCE, IT IS NECESSARY NOT TO FORCE THE VEHICLE
DURING THE 500 KM. THE VEHICLE MUST HAVE A SUITABLE RUN-IN PERIOD,
DURING WHICH THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS MUST BE CONSIDERED:
- AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE, WARM IT UP PROGRESSIVELY, WITHOUT
MAXIMUM ACCELERATION (WE RECOMMEND NOT TO EXCEED 3/4 OF THE
THROTTLE GRIP OPENING FOR THE GEAR) OR OVERCHARGE.
- IN LONG STRETCHES, DO NOT USE FULL SPEED CONSISTENTLY. TURN THE
THROTTLE GRIP SOME SECONDS FROM TIME TO TIME.
- WHEN FACING STEEP SLOPES, DOWNSHIFT TO HAVE BETTER POWER.
- AFTER A LONG RUN DO NOT STOP THE ENGINE SUDDENLY, LEAVE IT RUN-
NING AT MINIMUM ACCELERATION FOR SOME SECONDS.
- CHECK THE NON-EXISTENCE OF OIL, FUEL OR BRAKE LIQUID LEAKS.
- IN CASE OF ANOMALOUS NOISE, TRY TO IDENTIFY ITS CAUSE IMMEDIATE-
LY. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO MAKE THE CHECKS AND ADJUSTMENTS REQUIRED
FOR THE FIRST 500 ÷ 1000 KM COVERED.

Starting up the engine (02_02, 02_03, 02_04)

- If the engine is cold, use the carburettor starter «2».
- Ensure the gear is in neutral position.
- Position the throttle at 1/3 of the stroke.
- Insert the key on and turn it to position «1».
- Step on the start up pedal.
- Repeat procedures if necessary.

- Do not activate the starter «2» when the engine is hot.

Precautions

- DO NOT KEEP MAXIMUM ACCELERATION FOR A LONG TIME. USE THE EN-
GINE UP TO A 3/4 OF MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE. PETROL WILL BE SAVED
AND THE ENGINE LIFE WILL BE LONGER.

02_03 - WHEN BRAKING, STOP ACCELERATING.


- BRAKE MODERATELY, CONSIDERING THE TYPE OF ROAD. ON ASPHALT-
TREATED DRY ROADS, START BRAKING WITH THE FRONT BRAKE AND FIN-
ISH WITH BOTH. ON WET ROADS, OR WITH SAND OR SMALL STONES, NEVER
USE THE FRONT BRAKE AND KEEP MORE DISTANCE TO STOP THE SCOOT-
ER.
- WHEN STARTING OFF, ACCELERATE MODERATELY AND PROGRESSIVELY,
RELEASING THE CLUTCH GRADUALLY.
- AT CURVES, DO NOT TURN EXCESSIVELY.

Difficult start up
It may be engaged by thrusting in case it was necessary.
Insert the 2nd gear and thrust the vehicle with the clutch lever pulled. Once a sufficient
speed is reached, put pressure on the rear wheel and release the clutch suddenly,
repeat the procedures as necessary.

Stopping the engine (02_05)


To stop the engine, engage gear «1» in neutral position and turn the key switch anti-
clockwise.

Stand
Check the stand is completely unfold before resting the vehicle, so as to obtain an
optimum resting.

PLEASE, DO RIDE OFF WITH THE STAND UNFOLD.

Safe driving (02_06)

2 Use
Your ability and your knowledge of the scooter form the basis of safe driving. You
should therefore practise using the scooter in traffic-free areas until you have become
thoroughly acquainted with it.
SOME SIMPLE TIPS ARE PROVIDED BELOW THAT WILL ENABLE YOU TO USE
YOUR SCOOTER ON A DAILY BASIS BETTER SAFETY AND WITH MORE PEACE
OF MIND. <
• Ride always within your limits.
02_06 • Before riding off, remember to put on the helmet and fasten it correctly.
• Reduce speed on rough roads and ride with care.
• Remember that after riding on a long stretch of wet road without using the brakes,
the braking effect is initially lower. In these conditions, it is a good idea to apply the
brakes from time to time.
• Do not brake hard on a wet, unsurfaced or slippery roads.
• If you have to brake, use both brakes in order to spread the braking action between
both wheels.
• For very steep slopes, downshift gears to obtain a good traction.
• Avoid resting the vehicle on the stand when starting off.
• If you use the scooter on roads covered with sand, mud, snow mixed with salt, etc.,
we recommend that you clean the brake discs frequently with a non-aggressive de-
tergent in order to avoid the formation of abrasive build-ups in the holes, which could
result in premature wear of the brake pads.
• It should be remembered that any modifications that alter the vehicle's performance
as well as original parts of the structure, mean that the vehicle no longer conforms to
its homologation type and may be therefore dangerous for safe riding.

CAUTION

DO NOT FORGET THAT DRIVING IN A STATE OF DRUNKENNESS, OR WHEN


UNDER THE EFFECT OF DRUGS OR CERTAIN MEDICINES, CAN BE EXTREME-
LY DANGEROUS FOR ONESELF AND FOR OTHERS.

RIDING OFF
With engine at idle, operate the clutch lever, push the gear pedal on the left side of
the scooter and position it in 1st gear. Release the clutch gradually while accelerating
progressively.
GEAR SHIFTING
Release the accelerator, pull the clutch, and engage the desired gear, release the
clutch progressively and accelerate simultaneously. To reduce speed, downshift.
BRAKING
Activate both brakes gradually downshift simultaneously.

Gearbox oil level (03_01, 03_02, 03_03)
Check the oil level at the time indicated in the vehicle maintenance table. Be sure that
the vehicle is in vertical position, then, extract the oil level dipstick «1» placed on the
right side engine cover. This level indicates the essential minimum oil for the correct
working of the engine, but the optimum oil level is over that, it is advisable to check
that there is, at least, 650 cc of oil in the casing. If more oil is necessary, use only oil
with the same specifications as the one already in the engine.
CAUTION
ENGINE OIL IS TOXIC. DISPOSE IT PROPERLY

Replacement:
Replace oil for the first time after 1.000 Km are covered and, successively, every
10.000 Km. Replacement must be made with a warm engine. Once the load cap
«1» is removed, unscrew also the drainage cap «2» on the crankcase central section
and «3» on the cover on the right side of the same crankcase and let the oil flow.
Unscrew, the drainage cap and refill with 0,65 litres of oil. Once the operation is com-
plete, check the level and lock the refilling cap. Use recommended oil only.

Gearing chain (03_04, 03_05, 03_06)

3 Maintenance
The chain life depends on its correct lubrication and adjustment. Any act of negligence
or inattention in these procedures may cause damages and wearing in the pinion,
chain and crown, seriously affecting the vehicle performance.

CHECKING THE TRANSMISSION CHAIN TENSION


Check the transmission chain tension periodically. The check must be made with the
vehicle unloaded and in vertical position, and it must be repeated with the wheel in
03_04 different positions to ensure a non excessive crown eccentricity.
To check the tension press using your finger on the corresponding fork pin, the aver-
age of the chain must be between 30 and 45 millimetre.

TENSION ADJUSTMENT
To keep the transmission chain clearance within the right values, loosen nut «A» of
the wheel pin, screw the two adjustments «B» making the same number of turns for
adjustment on the right as for the adjustment on the left, so that the wheel is aligned.
Once the chain is adjusted, screw the wheel axle nut firmly.

DO NOT ASSEMBLE A NEW CHAIN WITH A WORN PINION OR CROWN, OR VICE


VERSA, SINCE NEW COMPONENTS WILL BE EASILY WORN.

LUBRICATION
To lubricate the transmission chain, distribute grease in small quantities on the inter-
sections among rollers and links while turning the wheel.
Use special oil for O-ring chains.

Tyres (03_07)
Periodically check the inflation pressure of each tyre.
Also check that the tyres do not show signs of splitting at the side or irregular tread
wear; if this occurs, go to an authorised workshop or at least a workshop equipped to
perform the replacement.

THE TYRE PRESSURE SHOULD BE CHECKED WHEN THE TYRES ARE COLD.
03_07 WRONG PRESSURE MAY CAUSE NOT ONLY AN ABNORMAL TYRE WEAR, BUT
ALSO VEHICLE UNSTEADINESS LEADING TO DANGER WHEN RIDING. THE
TYRE MUST BE REPLACED WHEN THE TREAD REACHES THE WEAR LIMITS
REQUIRED BY LAW.

Spark plug dismantlement (03_08)


Dismantle the spark plug periodically, check electrodes and wear. Use a thickness
gauge and check that the distance between electrodes is correct. Replace spark plugs
using the recommended brands within the expirations indicated in the vehicle main-
tenance table.

THE USE OF AN INAPPROPRIATE SPARK PLUG MAY CAUSE SERIOUS DAM-

CAUTION

THE SPARK PLUG MUST BE REMOVED WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD. THE USE
OF SPARK PLUGS OF DIFFERENT THERMAL GRADE FROM THAT REQUIRED
OR WITH INAPPROPRIATE THREADS MAY SERIOUSLY DAMAGE THE ENGINE.

Air filter cleaning (03_09)


Check the cleaning state and conditions of the filter every 5000 Km and every time
the vehicle is used on non-asphalted roads. Proceed as follows:
- remove the saddle;
- remove the right side «1» through the 3 fixing screws «2»;
- unscrew the 4 fixing screws of the air filter housing and take the filtering element out;
- wash the sponge with water and a neutral shampoo, dry with a clean cloth and short
03_09 blasts of compressed air;
- soak the sponge in a 50% petrol and Selenia Air Filter Oil solution;
- remove it from the solution, compress it with your hands without wringing out, let it
drain and reassemble.
Be extremely careful when repositioning the sponge in the housing support, in a way
that all the sealing lip perimeter affects the whole sponge.

IF THE FILTER IS OBSTRUCTED, THE ADMISSION RESISTANCE WILL IN-


CREASE, LEADING TO POWER LOSS AND FUEL CONSUMPTION WILL IN-
CREASE.

Cooling fluid level (03_10)
Every 1,000 km or after a long journey, the coolant level must be checked with a cold
engine, the level must be between the minimum «A» and the maximum «B».
To replace the coolant, remove the expansion tank cap and disconnect the manifold
from the water pump and empty it.
After having reinserted the new manifold refill the circuit with coolant, through the
expansion tank orifice, placed on the left side of the scooter under the front cover.
WARNING

IN ORDER TO AVOID BURNS, DO NOT UNSCREW THE EXPANSION TANK CAP


WHILE THE ENGINE IS STILL HOT.

The cooling circuit approximate capacity is 1,100 cc.


SYSTEM CHECK:
- Check the manifold conditions.
- If during scooter normal use the temperature indicator lights up, stop the engine and
wait so the coolant becomes cool. After that, with cold engine, check the coolant level
and refill, if necessary. Never take the expansion tank cap out with the coolant at high
temperature.
- To refill with coolant, the engine must be cold.

The coolant must be replaced every 2 years. For this operation, take your vehicle to

Braking system fluid top up


Air in the braking system.
If brake lever clearance becomes excessive or the lever has an elastic behaviour,
purge air from the braking system.
Air purging.
Assemble a transparent plastic tube on the purging orifice, to avoid the littering of the
braking system by the disposal liquid. Pull the brake lever to its maximum, loosen the
clearing, and release the brake lever. Do this procedure until the air in the braking
system is removed. After the air removal, refill the reservoir with brake fluid DOT 4.

Battery (03_11)
Battery
For battery access, it is necessary to insert the key on the tank cover lock, turn the
key rightwards and lift the cover. Dismantle the two fixing wing nuts of the saddle and
extract them, the battery compartment is under the saddle. The battery is the electrical
device that requires the most frequent inspections and diligent maintenance. The main
points of maintenance to be observed are as follows: Check the electrolyte level, this
must be checked frequently and it must reach the maximum level. To maintain such
level, use distilled water only. If necessary add water frequently, check the vehicle
03_11 electric system: the battery is working in overcharge and is easily impaired.
Battery maintenance
- Keep the tank caps perfectly closed. It is important.

- Keep the upper part perfectly clean, dry and away from corrosive materials. The
battery terminals must be cleaned and greased to avoid corrosion.

- Check the battery disposal capacity with a densitometer. 1.265 or most, it is consid-

ered a good capacity: if less, the battery must be charged. The advisable recharge
tension is 0.5 ÷ 1 Ao maximum, or until the advisable density is obtained.
- The battery, if not used, discharges between 0.5% and 1% every day. This measure
increases with temperature. To compensate, a recharge must be done once a month.
- Batteries contain sulphuric acid. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing.

WHEN RECHARGING THE BATTERY, MAXIMUM INTENSITY MUST NOT EX-


CEED 0.5 ÷ 1 A. OTHERWISE, THE BATTERY WOULD BE SERIOUSLY DAM-
AGED.

BATTERIES CONTAIN VERY ENVIRONMENTAL DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES.

Use of a new battery


Replace the battery, it must be done using the same capacity and tension: 12V, 4AH.

FOR A CORRECT USED BATTERY DISPOSAL, IT IS ADVISABLE TO HAVE IT


REPLACED AT AN OFFICIAL PIAGGIO/GILERA SERVICE CENTRE. BATTERIES
CONTAIN, AMONG OTHER SUBSTANCES, SULPHURIC ACID SO, UNDER NO
CIRCUMSTANCES, THEY SHOULD BE DISPOSED OF CONTAINERS FOR OR-
GANIC WASTE.

Long periods of inactivity
Battery performance will decrease if the vehicle is not used for a long time.
This is the result of the natural phenomenon of battery discharge, and may be due to
residual absorption by scooter components with constant power consumption.
Poor battery performance may also be due to environmental conditions and the clean-
ness of the leads.
One of the following procedures should be followed to avoid difficult starting and/or
irreparable damage to the battery:
• At least once a month start the engine and run it slightly above idle speed,
for 10-15 minutes. This keeps all the engine components, as well as the bat-
tery, in good working order.
• Store the vehicle with the battery removed. The battery must be clean, com-
pletely charged and stored in a dry and well ventilated area. Recharge at
least once every two months.
CAUTION
THE CHARGE MUST BE MADE WITH A CURRENT EQUAL TO 1/10 OF THE RAT-
ED CAPACITY OF THE BATTERY AND FOR NOT LONGER THAN 8 HOURS TAKE
THE VEHICLE TO AN AUTHORISED PIAGGIO-GILERA SERVICE CENTRE FOR
THIS OPERATION. WHEN REFITTING THE BATTERY MAKE SURE THE LEADS
ARE CORRECTLY CONNECTED TO THE TERMINALS.

Loosen two of the four rubber retainers on the fork. Draw the front cowl to access to
the rear part. Remove protection «A» to access the bulb. The bulb has a bayonet
coupling, to remove it press gently and twist anticlockwise about 30° and then with-
draw it.

Headlight adjustment (03_16, 03_17)


Place the vehicle over on a horizontal floor in front of a white screen placed at a 10 m
distance, in a darkened area with the vehicle in perpendicular position to the screen.
03_14 Start the engine and pull the throttle to 1/3 of its stroke, and turn the headlamp on.
Select low-beam light, the maximum demarcation limit between the dark and the light
area, must result in a height inferior to a 8/10 height from the ground to the centre of
the headlight. The front headlight pointing must be done with screw «A». Before
pointing the headlight, check that the tyres are inflated at the indicated pressure.
CAUTION
LIGHT BEAMS HEIGHT MUST BE WITHIN THE LEGAL LIMITS OF THE COUNTRY
WHERE THE VEHICLE IS USED".

Front direction indicators (03_18)


To replace the turn indicator bulbs, loosen screw «C» from the transparent plastic.
The bulbs have a bayonet coupling, to remove them press gently and twist anticlock-
wise about 30° and, then, withdraw it.

To access the rear light bulbs, unscrew the transparent plastic retainers «B» and the
bulb is completely accessible.

The bulbs have a bayonet coupling, to remove them press gently and twist anticlock-

Idle adjustment (03_21)


Carburettor
Trouble-free carburetion is the basis for a good engine performance. The carburettor
is regulated in factory to perform the best carburetion. Do not alter this adjustment.
Adjusting the idle speed
This operation must be made with warm engine, in neutral position and with no ac-
celeration.

03_21 Twist the adjustment screw at minimum towards the inside or outside until the engine
idle speed is set at a point in which the engine is about to stop, but functioning normally.
For any other carburettor adjustment, contact an Authorised Service Centre Piag-
gio-Gilera.
WARNING
IT IS CONVENIENT TO MAKE A CARBURETTOR CLEANING PERIODICALLY
WITH CLEAN PETROL AND PRESSURED AIR.

Front and rear disc brake

The disc brakes, comparing with drum brakes, have the following specifications and
advantages:
- The heat evacuation from friction surfaces is very efficient, since discs turn with direct
air contact. This is the reason why they always have a steady braking capacity, even
when the brake is used repeatedly at high speed.
- No component of the disc brake is exposed to deformation due to elevate tempera-
tures.
- The pad change is simple and does not require difficult procedures.

- As the discs are wet on rainy days, the recovery of the braking power is excellent
and efficient braking of the front and rear brakes is ensured. This is thanks to the pads
high pressure specifications.

Brake disc
The disc surface must be completely free of oil. Use alcohol and a soft cloth for clean-
ing.

If the brake squeals, may be due to the following causes:
- Incorrect brake functioning
- Brake pad wearing. Excessive wear make the brakes squeal.
In both cases, contact an Authorised Service Centre Piaggio-Gilera.
Hoses and Joints:
Check periodically that joints are not worn and joint connections have no leakage.

THROTTLE GRIP
Check that the throttle grip turns freely with the handlebar at the end of the stroke at
both sides. Check that the idle handlebar stroke is 4 mm. If necessary, adjust with the
throttle grip adjuster «B», after removing the rubber cap.
CLUTCH
The handlebar lever clutch must a have an 8 mm idle stroke, adjust it periodically with
the adjuster «A» under the rubber cap.

BRAKES
The front brake does not need adjustment and the only maintenance operation is
checking the liquid level in the brake pump reservoir. The brake liquid reservoirs have
a peephole «C» of transparent material. With peephole «C» complete, the level inside
the reservoir exceeds the Minimum; when the peephole is partially full, the level has
decreased to the Minimum; when it is completely empty, the level is inferior to the
Minimum. Worn brake pads may cause the decrease of the brake liquid level. Should
the level be below the minimum, the Customer is advised to contact an Authorised
Piaggio-Gilera Service Centre for a thorough check of the braking system. To adjust
the level follow the instructions below. For the front brake, unscrew the 2 screws«D»,
03_26 lift the cover of the brake liquid tank and introduce the needed liquid quantity, (liquid
must always be over the minimum level ). For the rear brake, unscrew the cap «E» of
the tank turning anticlockwise, then, introduce the needed liquid quantity (liquid must
always be over the minimum level ). Checking levels must be made with the tank in
horizontal position, without vehicle inclination.

Periods of inactivity
We recommend carrying out the following operations:
1. General cleaning of the vehicle.
2. With engine off and pistons at bottom dead centre, remove the spark plug, intro-
duce through its hole 1 ÷ 2 cc of SELENIA HI SCOOTER 2 Tech. Then, operate the
engine start-up pedal 3-4 times making the engine work slowly and reassemble the
spark plug.
3. Remove the fuel from the vehicle: coat the unpainted metal parts with antirust
grease: keep the wheels off the ground, by resting the chassis on two wooden sup-
ports.
4. For the battery, follow the standards listed in the booklet.
5. Drain the petrol from the carburettor tank through the bleed tap.

Cleaning the vehicle


In order to soften the dirt and mud deposited on the painted surfaces, use a low pres-
sure water jet. Once softened, mud and dirt must be removed with a soft sponge for
bodywork soaked in lots of water and "shampoo" (2-4% of car shampoo in water).
Then rinse abundantly with water, and dry with a shammy cloth. For the motor exterior
use petroleum, a brush and clean rags. Petroleum can damage paintwork. Remember
that any polishing with silicon wax must always be preceded by washing

Chrome-plated components washing


Wash using neutral shampoo and warm water cleaning the inner chassis with a
sponge to remove dirt. Do not rub emphatically. Rinse with warm water and dry. Once
the cleaning is complete, dry the components completely, to avoid water spots.
Finishing with protection paint
Apply the protective paint as soon as the first rusting signs appear. To obtain optimum
finishing, we recommend using a small brush and shaking the paint before its use.
Ensure the surface is clean and dry. Apply where impairment signs are seen. Do not
apply on surfaces around the impaired or scratched spot.
Wax slick
The waxed slicks of painted parts keep the original brightness of the vehicle. Wash
always the vehicle before this operation. Use always good quality silicone wax and
follow the precaution interactions of the manufacturer.
