 Time fixer: Nowadays, recently, lately, in recent times…

 Generalisation: Put forward the topic, what is the situation or

problem and the effect it has?

 Round off: link all the above to the main topic e.g. “the question
that arises is whether…/what…/how…”, remember DO NOT STATE
YOUR OPINION

Don’t know how to start?

 “Nowadays, the vast majority of people feel/believe/agree that…”

 “Nowadays, a significant/considerable/large number of people

feel/believe/agree that…”

 “Recently, it has been announced/suggested that…”

Example (compulsory sports):

“In recent times, on account of media awareness campaigns, a

vast/huge amount of people recognise the importance of exercise and
the benefits it can have on our health. In an attempt to promote this
idea a large/significant number of schools want to make participation
in sports compulsory”.

Main body (paragraph 2 & 3):

 Paragraph 1: Ideas for, give 1-2 ideas, maximum 3, and explain

well, give reasons and examples to support what you have written.

 Language: Pay attention to the maturity of the language that you

use (linking words, phrases…) e.g. “an additional advantage is…
Furthermore/moreover/besides/what is more…”)

Don’t know how to start?

 “One of the main ideas in favour of…is that…”

 “One of the main arguments in favour of…is that it has several

benefits”

 Paragraph 2: Ideas against, give 1-2 ideas, maximum 3, and
explain well, give reasons and examples to support what you have

use (linking words, phrases…) e.g. “an additional
disadvantage/drawback is…Furthermore/moreover/besides/what is
more…another negative aspect of…is/a further
disadvantage/drawback is…”)

Don’t know how to start?

 “On the other hand a significant/considerable number of people

argue/maintain/support that…has some drawbacks as well/also”

 “On the other hand…has a negative side too”

 “As well as this a significant/considerable number of people

argue/maintain/support that…”

Conclusion (paragraph 4):

 Strong Ending: This paragraph should include your FINAL,

STRONG, CLEAR opinion, the reader should have no doubt as to
what you believe.

 Suggestion: It is a good idea to make a suggestion about the

problem at hand, this will make both, the ending, and your opinion
appear stronger e.g. “I believe that/in my opinion it would be a good
idea if (past tense)…”

Don’t know how to start?

 “Having considered both sides, I believe/feel/maintain that…”

“Taking everything into account/consideration I am strongly

opposed/against/in favour of…”

Example (compulsory sports):

“Having considered both sides, I believe that it would be a good idea if

team sports were to be made compulsory in schools in order to begin
establishing healthy eating patterns/habits as soon as possible in

children’s lives and, to avoid obesity taking over our society/to steer
