Solve the Problem

To help her parents pay the tuition fee, Jean saves 5
pesos more each week than she does the preceding
st
week. Her savings in the 1 week was 15 pesos.

th
a) How much will she save on the 10
week?
b) How much will she have in all by
th
the end of the 10 week?
Arithmetic
Sequence and
Series

Learning Objectives
I can…

• define arithmetic sequence

• determine the common difference of an arithmetic
sequence
• find arithmetic means
• find the sum of the terms of a given arithmetic
sequence
“How can you find
the nth term and
sum of an arithmetic
sequence?”
What is an
ARITHMETIC
SEQUENCE?
ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE
is a sequence where every term
after the first is obtained by
adding a constant called the
common difference (d).
Is this an Arithmetic Sequence?
1.9, 16, 23,30, 37,... Yes
2.1, -1, 1, -1, 1,... No
3.3, 11, 19, 27, 35,... Yes
4.2, 3, 5, 8, 12, … No
5.1.12, 2.32, 3.52, 4.72,... Yes
Arithmetic Sequence
1.9, 16, 23,30, 37,...
a1= 9 a2= 16 a3= 23 a4= 30 a5= 37 n= 5 d= 7

a1=a1 a3=a2+d= (a1+d)+d= a1+2d

a2=a1+d a4=a3+d= (a1+2d)+d= a1+3d
an=a1+(n-1)d
Arithmetic Sequence

an=a1+(n-1)d
where:
an= nth term a1= 1st term
n= number of terms d= common difference
Find the 16th term of the sequence 1, 5, 9, 13,...
an= a16 a1= 1 n= 16 d= 4

a16= 1+(16-1)4
an=a1+(n-1)d a16= 1+(15)4
a16= 1+60
a16= 61

In the sequence 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, …

which term is 42?
Try it!

The 4th term of an arithmetic sequence is

34 and the 10th term is 22.

What is an
ARITHMETIC
MEAN?
Definition of Terms
Arithmetic Means - also called the
average, the terms between any two
terms.
3, 5, 7, 9, 11
Definition of Terms
Arithmetic Extremes - The first and
last terms of a finite arithmetic
sequences.
3, 5, 7, 9, 11
Insert three arithmetic means between 5 and 25
an= 25 a1= 5 n= 5 d= ?

25= 5+(5-1)d

25-5=4d
20=4d

What is an
ARITHMETIC
SERIES?
Definition of Terms
Arithmetic Series - the sum of n terms of an
arithmetic sequence.

Arithmetic Series

where:

Sn= sum of first nth terms A1= 1st term

n= number of terms d= common difference
