Course Overview
The course covers fundamental concepts on the vibration of mechanical systems
including, mechanical vibratory systems with one- and multi-degrees of freedom,
the resulting differential equations or systems of differential equations of motion
and their solutions, and applications to axial, transverse and torsional vibrations.
Both free and forced, and damped and undamped vibrations are dealt with at most
depth. Although all forms of force and displacement excitations are considered
much attention is given for harmonic excitations. The course also encompasses
introduction to vibration measurement and control. Students will be guided and
assisted to work with MATLAB to solve mechanical vibration problems.

Academic Integrity
ASTU values academic integrity. Therefore, all students must understand the
meaning and consequences of cheating, plagiarism and other academic offences
under the Code of Student Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures. Work
submitted may be subjected to a plagiarism detection process, which may include
the use of systems such as “Turnitin”.
Referencing style
The School of Mechanical, Chemicals and Materials advises students to use
the "APA Referencing Style" for written work and oral presentations. However,
students are permitted to use other recognized styles that appear in the Engineering
literature.
Other Requirements
Minimum 80% during lecture and 100% during practical work sessions except for
some unprecedented mishaps.
This course is one of the highly applicable courses in industries. Students are
expected to attend all classes regularly and study from text books once the topic is
discussed in classes. Students are advised to prepare for classes by reading the
available materials before coming to classes and participate actively to enhance
better understanding of the course and attain the learning outcomes.
There have been many reference books proposed for each topic which will
be discussed in class. Students are encouraged to read and prepare based on the
additional materials. Students are expected to update the development of the project
on the weekly basis and report irregularities to be sorted out at the earliest.
