Question 1 Total for Question 1: 20 marks


(a) If a set A has 6 elements, how many proper subsets does A have? (2 marks)
(b) Show that (a → b) ↔ (∼ a ∨ b) is a tautology. (4 marks)
(c) Solve the equation z2 + 6z + 25 = 0. (3 marks)
(d) Given that −1 is a root of the equation z3 − z2 + 3z + k = 0, find the value of k and
the other two roots of the equation. (5 marks)
(e) A survey of 100 families was carried out asking people about the pets they own. The
results are given below:
56 owned dogs; 38 owned cats; 22 owned birds; 16 owned dogs and cats but not birds;
8 owned birds and cats but not dogs; 4 owned all the three types of pets and 3 owned
dogs and birds but not cats.
Let the set of those who owned dogs be S, those who owned cats be Q and those who
owned birds be R.
i. Find the number of families who owned no pets. (2 marks)
ii. Find the number of families who owned atleast one type of pet. (2 marks)
iii. Find the number of families who owned exactly two types of the pets (2 marks)

(a) In Nairobi, 85% of the people speak Kiswahili, 40% speak English and 20% speak
Sheng. Also 32% speak Kiswahili and English, 13% speak Kiswahili and Sheng and
10% speak English and Sheng, find the percentage of people who can speak all the
three languages. (4 marks)
(b) Write each of the following sentences in symbolic form using statement variables p and
q:
i. 19 is not a prime number and all the angles of a triangle are equal. (2 marks)
ii. 19 is a prime number or all the angles of a triangle are not equal. (2 marks)
iii. 19 is a prime number and all the angles of a triangle are equal.
(iv) 19 is not a prime number. (2 marks)

(a) Use the de Moivres theorem to prove that cos 3θ = cos3 θ − 3 cos θ sin2 θ. (3 marks)
(b) At a certain conference of 1000 people there are 290 Kenyan women and 230 Kenyan
men. Out of these people 40 are doctors and 240 are either men or doctors. There are
no foreign doctors. Find the number of women doctors attending the conference. (4 marks)
(c) Write the converse, inverse, and contrapositive of each of the implication “If x and y
are numbers such that x = y, then x2 = y 2 .” (3 marks)
(d) Using a truth table, check whether the statements ¬(p ∨ q) ∧ (¬p ∨ q) and ¬p are
logically equivalent. (2 marks)

(a) Express the following complex numbers in polar form:
i. −4 + 3i (2 marks)

(b) Among 50 students in a class, 26 got an A in the first examination and 21 got an A in
the second examination. If 17 students did not get an A in either examination, how
many students got A in both the examinations? (4 marks)

(a) Some Kenyan Citizens were asked about the politicians they dislike. The survey
showed that:1900 dislike Raila, 600 dislike Raila and Kenyatta and William, 2400
dislike William, 400 dislike Kenyatta but don’t dislike Raila and don’t dislike William,
1100 dislike William and Raila, 300 dislike Kenyatta and William but don’t dislike
Raila, 2000 dislike Kenyatta and 500 have no dislikes.
i. How many Kenyan citizens dislike at least one of these three politicians? (2 marks)
ii. How many Kenyan citizens were surveyed? (2 marks)
iii. How many Kenyan citizens dislike William but don’t dislike Raila? (2 marks)
iv. How many Kenyan citizens dislike Raila or Kenyatta? (2 marks)
v. How many Kenyan citizens dislike either one or two of the three politicians? (2 marks)
(b) Given that | A |= 55, | B |= 40, | C |= 80, | A ∩ B |= 20, | A ∩ B ∩ C =| 17 |, B ∩ C |= 24
and | A ∪ C |= 100 find:
i. | A ∩ C (2 marks)
ii. | C − B | (3 marks)
iii. | (B ∩ C) − (A ∩ B ∩ C) | (3 marks)
