Lecture-5
Unit-2 Codes for Lighting
Terminologies
• Before getting into basis of ‘LIGHT SOURCE’ let’s have a
brief on its Terminology..

• What people call a bulb is actually a LAMP.

• Each light source whether Flourescent, Gas discharge, LED

or Incandescent should ideally be called a lamp.
Terminologies
• Luminaire:

It is defined as
complete electric
light unit
Light Output Ratio

• The light within a luminaire is pointed in the

desired directions by means of reflection and
transmission. These processes, however,
inevitably leads to optical losses. They reduce
the luminous flux emitted by the luminaire
when compared to the luminous flux freely
emitted by the light sources installed in it.

• Light Output Ratio (LOR) is the percentage of

light emitted from the light source that makes
it out of the luminaire.

Tubular Daylighting devices

• Tubular daylight devices are another type of

top lighting device.
Tubular Daylighting devices
• These devices employ a highly reflective film
on the interior of a tube to channel light from
a lens at the roof, to a lens at the ceiling
plane.
Tubular Daylighting devices
• Tubular daylight devices tend to be much
smaller than a typical skylight, yet still deliver
sufficient daylight for the purpose of dimming
the electric lighting.
Energy Efficient Lighting
• Other energy efficient lighting
includes:
• LED Lighting:
LED bulbs consume significantly
less electricity compared to
traditional incandescent bulbs,
making them a cost-effective and
eco-friendly choice.

LED lights also have a longer

lifespan, reducing the frequency of
replacements and minimizing
waste.
Energy Efficient Lighting
• Smart Lighting Systems
o Smart lighting systems combine energy
efficiency with convenience and
control. These systems incorporate
features like motion sensors, dimmers,
and remote control capabilities.
o With smart lighting, homeowners can
adjust brightness levels, set timers,
and even control lighting remotely
through smartphone apps.
o This level of control not only enhances
energy efficiency but also allows
homeowners to create customized
lighting experiences tailored to their
needs.
Solar-Powered Lighting
• Solar-powered lighting is an excellent
option for outdoor spaces and areas
with ample sunlight.
• These lighting systems harness the
power of the sun through solar panels
and store energy in rechargeable
batteries.
• Solar-powered lights automatically
switch on at dusk and provide
illumination throughout the night,
reducing reliance on conventional
electricity.
