Instructions to students:

1. Please submit your assignments online. Please scan and upload your solution as a
SINGLE PDF file.

2. Late submissions will NOT be marked.

3. Please write down your name, student ID, and tutorial section.

Questions:

1. Find all first and second derivatives of the following functions f (x, y, z).

(a) (x − 1)5 y 7 (z + 2)8 (b) yzexy

Verify that fxy = fyx , fxz = fzx and fyz = fzy .

2. Verify that

(a) z(x, y) = arctan(y/x) + ax + by + c satisfies the equation zxx + zyy = 0.

(b) u(x, t) = sin(cnt) sin(nx) satisfies the equation utt = c2 uxx .

3. Find the linear approximation of the following functions at specific points.

(a) f (x, y) = exy at (0, 4).

(b) f (x, y) = y cos(πx) at (π, 1).

4. Consider the function f (x, y) = (x − 1) 4 (y − 1) 4 . Show that

(a) It is continuous at (1, 1).

(b) The partial derivatives exist at (1, 1). However, except the directions (±1, 0)
and (0, ±1), all the other directional derivatives do not exist.

5. If the function f (x, y) satisfies the following equations

∂f 1
= −ex + and f (x, 0) = 2ex + x2 ,
∂y 1 − xy

find f (x, y).

6. Let u = u(x, y) be a differentiable function. Find the expression of

in terms of the polar coordinates. Namely, expressing |∇u|2 in term of

∂u ∂u
r, θ, ,
∂θ ∂r
where
x(r, θ) = r cos θ, y(r, θ) = r sin θ

7. Find the tangent plane of the level surface w(x, y, z) = 1 − xyz + 2 ln(xyz), at

(1, , 2).

8. Find the stationary points of the function f (x, y) = x3 − 3xy − y 3 and determine
their nature.

9. Consider the implicit function z = z(x, y) satisfying 2x2 +4y 2 +z 2 +4xz−2z+8 = 0.

Find its extreme values.

10. Use Lagrange multiplier to find the extreme values of the function
