Storage devices and media

Section 1 – Chapter 3

By: Nageeb Yahya

Candidates should be able to:
▸ Define the storage devices/drive and storage medium/disk
▸ What is data backup, why we need to backup data?
▸ How the computer access the data
▸ What does mean the primary and secondary storage?
▸ Identify storage devices and their uses
▹ magnetic storage devices and their types
▹ optical storage media and their types
▹ solid state storage and their types
▹ Describe the advantages and disadvantages of the above devices

What is the difference between storage device and
storage medium
▸ storage medium: The device that actually holds the data

▸ storage device : The device that save/ write data onto the storage medium, or
reads data from it.

Secondary Storage devices (Backup) data is stored permanently (non-

volatile) rewritable memory, so that it can be used again later.
Think about what we store:
Documents, Images, video, Music, Software, Games etc 5

3.1 Data Backup (case study)

Solution
System is crashed Data Backup

▸ Data backup: copying of files/ data to a different medium in case of a problem with the main
secondary storage device such as ( HDD disk, tape, flash drive,CD) 7
Data Storage Capacity (digital data)
▸ The computer store the data in digital format (binary 0,1) Bit = one digit
▸ Storage size or file size : measured by byte/ kb / Mb/ Gb
▸ bit = 0 or 1 Byte = 8 bits character A = 1 byte size A= 0100 0001
▸ The space is considered as a character
Byte = 8 bits

Secondary storage
▸ Magnetic storage : data stored in a magnetic form . Magnetic material is coated
on the surface.
▸ Example: HDD, External HDD and Tape drive

▸ Optical storage : data stored as a series of pits and lands (0,1).

▸ It uses Red/ Blue Laser light to read / write data on the surface of the disk.
▸ Example: CD / DVD / Blue ray drive

▸ Solid state storage : data stored as electron charge in chip (transistor) .

▸ Example: SSD, Pen drive, SD card, memory stick and CFast reader

12
Magnetic storage
1-HDD (Hard Disk Drive) N S

▸ 1-Fixed Hard Disk Drives (HDD):

▸ electro-mechanical storage device
that read and write data using head on
magnetic storage medium (Disk).
▸ The digital data stored in magnetic
form as 1 or 0.
▸ it is located inside the computer
(internal hardware).
▸ 2-Portable HDD: This device connects to the
Play computer using the USB Port.
▸ Transfer files between computers
13
Magnetic storage
2-Tape Drive
▸ Magnetic tape strip: is a medium for magnetic recording.
▸ made of :thin strip of plastic film coated by magnetic.
▸ Capacity: Huge storage capacity
▸ Uses: Large organizations make daily backups of data such
as bank, Google, Facebook, Amazon.

Solid state storage Play

▸ General characteristics :
▸ no moving parts
▸ Media : electronic chip millions of tiny transistors (Flash memory)
▸ The data is stored as 0s and 1s in millions of tiny transistors within the chip.
▸ Memory type: non-volatile rewritable memory

All SSDs have a limited lifespan due to write cycles

18
Solid state Drive
▸ Solid state drives (SSD) :
▸ Uses: store files and software in a computer
▸ Data access: Fast compared to HDD
▸ Capacity: high capacity

▸ Pen/ Flash drives (Portable) :

▸ Uses: store files and transferee files between
computers
▸ Capacity: Low capacity
19
Solid state media (Card)
▸ xD Card (eXtreme Digital):
▸ Uses: Old technology (certain manufacturer) , store
media in digital camera
▸ Drive: Card Reader built-in camera.
▸ Capacity: Max 2GB

▸ SD / Micro SD Card (Secure Digital):

▸ Uses: store media in smartphone, tablet and digital
camera
▸ Drive: need Card Reader (built-in smartphone).
▸ Capacity: high capacity/Fast access (128Mb-128TB)
20
Solid state media
▸ CFast Card (Compact Flash):
▸ Uses: Gaming devices / Digital camera
▸ Drive: need Card Reader (built-in Game device/cam).
▸ Data access: Fast Size: Large
▸ Capacity: high up to 1TB
