Assignment # 2
[Total Marks: 60, CLO 2]
Note: Assume reasonable values for any missing data. Symbols have usual meaning unless otherwise
stated. Assignment duration is one week.
Pb # 1: The tank in Fig. 1 has vertical sides, b1= 3.6+C.No m, b2 = 7.2+C.No m, zo = 4.2 m, and
its dimension normal to the plane of the paper is a = 1.8 m. The vertical dividing plate
has a submerged orifice 0.063 m2 in area (Cd = 0.6). How long will it take for the two
water surfaces to equalize?
Pb # 2: The cone-shaped tank in Fig. 2 has the shape of the frustum of a cone with a 0.22-m2
orifice (Cd = 0.60) in the bottom. Given D1 = 12+C.No m and D2 = 5.6+C.No m,
zo = 10.4+C.No m with the water surface outside constant at section 1 and the tank
initially empty, how long will it take for the water level in the tank to rise from section
2 to section 1?
Pb # 3: A supply pipe is 1500+C.No ft long, water is initially flowing through it at 2 fps, and the
pressure waves travel along it at 3750+C.No fps. For valve closure times of 0.36 sec,
find the maximum water hammer pressure at the valve and at 500 ft and 1000 ft from
the valve (a) if the valve is completely closed (b) if the valve is partially closed reducing
the flow velocity to 0.6 fps.
Pb # 4: Find the shear stress and the thickness of the boundary layer (a) at the center and (b)
at the trailing edge of smooth, flat plate 10+C.No ft wide and 2+C.No ft long parallel
to the flow, immersed in 60 oF water flowing at an undisturbed velocity of 10 fps. Also,
find (c) find the total friction drag on the plate.
Pb # 5: A 1.5-ft-diameter metal ball weighing 150+C.No lb is dropped into the ocean from a
boat. Determine the maximum velocity of the ball as it falls through sea water with
ρ = 2 slugs/ft3 and μ = 3.3 x 10-5 lb•sec/ft2.
Pb # 6: A 6-in-diameter pipe (reentrant entrance, f = 0.028) 475+C.No ft long can deliver water
from a higher reservoir to a lower one (submerged discharge). The difference between
the two water surface elevations is C.No ft. After a valve near the downstream end is
suddenly opened, what will be the steady flow velocity in this pipe, and how long after
the valve is opened will the flow velocity be 90% of the steady velocity?
