accepted online gambling as having economic viability. (Griffiths) 2010 heightened the

Hodgins, David C., et al (2021) Online gambling is considered to be a particularly

problematic gambling format, given the relative lack of constraints on how and when it can be
accessed, its solitary nature, and the wide variety of types of gambling available. Research
consistently shows higher rates of GD among online gamblers versus individuals who only
gamble at land-based venues.

Over the past decade, the use of computers and the Internet has significantly altered the
gambling landscape. The gambling industry is no longer bound by brick-and-mortar gambling
venues (e.g., casinos, racetracks). Today, access to gambling activities can be achieved with a
few keystrokes on a computer. Online gambling (compared with land-based gambling) provides
players with ease of access, 24/7 accessibility, and confidentiality—all within the comfort of a
person’s home. This ease of access has been flagged as a potential concern among researchers,
regulators, and policy makers alike (Gainsbury 2015; Gainsbury and Wood 2011; Räsänen et al.
2013)
Gambling activity among adolescents and young people (under 25 years) has received
considerable research attention due to a high prevalence of gambling reported among these
groups in recent years. Despite legislation worldwide to constrain gambling among adolescents
and young people, modern technology, such as online gaming apps and online gambling venues,
have significantly increased their exposure to the risks of problem gambling. Moreover, there is
emerging evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in engagement with
online gambling. The most frequently reported associated risk was being male, followed by the
attitudes of parents, family, and friends towards gambling, involvement with alcohol and/or other
substances, sensation seeking, and poor social connectedness.

Awareness, prevention, and responsible social policies should be at the forefront of

university initiatives. Universities would be best advised to initiate campus-wide prevention
programs, similar to drug and alcohol campaigns, providing guidelines for responsible gambling
and warning signs for problem gambling (Ellenbogen et al., 2008; Engwall et al., 2004)

Internet Gambling affects college students when regards to their academic performance,

individual provided that the risk factors are presented such as the severity of time that they spend
on the internet, such money that has been spent as well as introduction into more arrays of
internet gambling regardless of whether it is unregulated or licensed by the government agency
arm handling such activities online.

Petry and González Ibáñez (2013) stated the popularity of internet gambling among
college students and its association with problem gambling behaviors. The study focuses on the
need for targeted interventions to address the risks posed by online gambling activities. Despite
legislative steps, the increase of online gambling venues continues to be a challenge, especially
in the absence of specific regulations targeting internet gambling.

Conrad (2014) explores university students' attitudes, behaviors, and perceptions

regarding gambling, alleviating the plurality of internet gambling among college populations.
The study focuses on the significance of understanding students' perspectives to develop
effective interventions and support mechanisms. Additionally, research by Filipino scholars
identifies risk factors associated with internet gaming among Filipino students, including
preoccupation with internet games and unsuccessful attempts to control gaming. These findings
suggest that Wesleyan University Philippines students may face similar challenges related to
internet gambling.

Also, institutional policies play an essential role in addressing student gambling

behaviors. The University of the East (UE), acknowledges the potential negative effects of
student gambling and emphasizes the importance of implementing student gambling policies.
Such policies aim to mitigate the risks associated with internet gambling and promote
responsible gambling practices among students (Salko, 2021).
