The Gambling Industry in the Philippines has become a major source of the country's
GDP Gross domestic product. as it's it can easily be accessed by ordinary people, who simply
engage in poker, or slot machines or have e-beating at their houses with their hand computer sets,
for which the money that the person will use as bet will already process right-away as easily as
possible. many gambling sites are licensed to operate by the government through PAGCOR or
Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation. for which the country is subject to limited
legislation on matters of online gambling. (Lamoste, 2021) to uncover such attitude and behavior
that affects the online gambling industry, while such promotional ads online can remain as
immaterial.
Over the past decade, the use of computers and the Internet has significantly altered the
gambling landscape. The gambling industry is no longer bound by brick-and-mortar gambling
venues (e.g., casinos, racetracks). Today, access to gambling activities can be achieved with a
few keystrokes on a computer. Online gambling (compared with land-based gambling) provides
players with ease of access, 24/7 accessibility, and confidentiality—all within the comfort of a
person’s home. This ease of access has been flagged as a potential concern among researchers,
regulators, and policy makers alike (Gainsbury 2015; Gainsbury and Wood 2011; Räsänen et al.
2013)
Gambling activity among adolescents and young people (under 25 years) has received
considerable research attention due to a high prevalence of gambling reported among these
groups in recent years. Despite legislation worldwide to constrain gambling among adolescents
and young people, modern technology, such as online gaming apps and online gambling venues,
have significantly increased their exposure to the risks of problem gambling. Moreover, there is
emerging evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in engagement with
online gambling. The most frequently reported associated risk was being male, followed by the
attitudes of parents, family, and friends towards gambling, involvement with alcohol and/or other
substances, sensation seeking, and poor social connectedness.
Internet Gambling affects college students when regards to their academic performance,
due to the hours that it spent on the internet which transcribe to the factors leading to online
gambling. for which (Reyes, 2020). classified the levels of emotions and the response of every
individual provided that the risk factors are presented such as the severity of time that they spend
on the internet, such money that has been spent as well as introduction into more arrays of
internet gambling regardless of whether it is unregulated or licensed by the government agency
arm handling such activities online.
Petry and González Ibáñez (2013) stated the popularity of internet gambling among
college students and its association with problem gambling behaviors. The study focuses on the
need for targeted interventions to address the risks posed by online gambling activities. Despite
legislative steps, the increase of online gambling venues continues to be a challenge, especially
in the absence of specific regulations targeting internet gambling.
