(Two Product Formula)

Dr. Zulfiqar Ali

Department of Mining Engineering
University of Engineering & Technoogy, Lahore
Two Product Formula
 The simplest case is that in which 2-products are produced
from a given feed.
 A method of evaluating plant operation totally from assays
(% metal, % in size class, etc.).
 The assays used must be conserved around the process.
 The process should make a significant separation of the
assay component selected.
 Very useful in real world because plant flows are often
difficult to measure.
Important Formulas
TonnesofFeed
 K: Ratio of concentration: K 
1tonneofconcentrate

MetalContentoftheConcentrate
 R:Recovery: R 
MetalContentoftheFeed

GradeoftheConcentrate
 Enrichment Ratio=
GradeoftheFeed
Two Product Formula
 Solid Mass Balance: F = C + T
 Component Balance: Ff = Cc + Tt

 F = mass flow rate of feed solids

 f = feed assay
 C = mass flow rate of concentrate solids
 c = concentrate assay
 T = mass flow rate of tailing solids
 t = tailing assay
Derivation (Concentration Ratio)
Ff  Cc  Tt
 Ft  Ct  Tt
F ( f  t )  C (c  t )
F c t
K 
C f t
Cc c( f  t )
R 100  100
Ff f (c  t )
1 c
R  100
K f
Example: Concentration Ratio
 Using the two-product formula, determine the Ratio of
Concentration
Feed (10,000 tons, 2.59 % Cu)

Cu Flotation Concentrate (1,000 tons, 25.0 % Cu)

Tailings
(9,000 tons, 0.10 % Cu)

 K = 10 (How?)
Derivation (Recovery) FAT-CAT
F c t
 Concentration Ratio: K 
C f t

Cc
 Recovery (definition): R  100
Ff

 Solve it in the class

 Recovery (two-product formula):

Example FAT-CAT
 Using the two-product formula, determine the copper
recovery
Feed (10,000 tons, 2.59 % Cu)

Cu Flotation Concentrate (1,000 tons, 25.0 % Cu)

Tailings
(9,000 tons, 0.10 % Cu)

 Solution?
Rejection

Example: Rejection
 Using the two-product formula, determine the copper
rejection
Feed (10,000 tons, 2.59 % Cu)

Cu Flotation Concentrate (1,000 tons, 25.0 % Cu)

Tailings
(9,000 tons, 0.10 % Cu)

 Solve it…………..
Selectivity Index

Example
Feed (10,000 tons, 2.59 % Cu)

Cu Flotation Concentrate (1,000 tons, 25.0 % Cu)

Tailings
(9,000 tons, 0.10 % Cu)
Example

Feed (10,000 tons, 2.59 % Cu, 7.48% CuFeS2, 92.52% Gangue )

Cu Flotation Concentrate (1,000 tons, 25.0 % Cu, 72.2% CuFeS2, 27.8% Gangue)

Tailings: (9,000 tons, 0.10 % Cu, 0.10 % Cu, 0.29% CuFeS2, 99.71% Gangue )
Example

Feed (10,000 tons, 2.59 % Cu, 7.48% CuFeS2, 92.52% Gangue )

Cu Flotation Concentrate (1,000 tons, 25.0 % Cu, 72.2% CuFeS2, 27.8% Gangue)

Tailings: (9,000 tons, 0.10 % Cu, 0.10 % Cu, 0.29% CuFeS2, 99.71% Gangue )

Fun Fact
Coal could be the world’s most attractive fuel in years to come…..

Thanks to the coal processing engineers, who invented methods to clean
