Lesson 1 – Introduction to Handling and Modelling

Data
Grade 5
Inspiring the next generation of digital innovators
Lesson 1 – Introduction to Handling
and Modelling Data
By the end of this lesson you will know:

• How to design an investigation

03
What is Data?
Data is information that we collect. For example, numbers, words, or measurements that tell us
something about a particular topic.

4
Why do we Collect Data?
1. Data collection is the process of gathering relevant information for analysis.

2. It can provide many benefits:

• Informed decision making

• Problem identification
• Trend identification
• Goal tracking
• Strategy evaluation etc.

5
Design An Investigation

1. Ask Questions:
a. What do you want to find out?
e.g., How many students like ice cream?

2. Collect Data:
a. Gather information to answer the question.
e.g., Ask each student their favorite ice cream flavor.

3. Organize Data:
a. Sort the information to make it easier to understand.
e.g., Tally the number of students who like each flavor.

06
Design An Investigation

4. Analyze Data:
a. Look at the information to find patterns.
e.g., Most students like chocolate.

5. Present Findings:
a. Share what you learned.
(e.g., Create a chart showing the number of students who like each flavor.)

07
Data Modeling

What is a Data Model?

• A way to represent information visually so it's easier to understand. For example,

charts or graphs.

Examples of a Data Model?

• Bar Charts
• Pie Charts

Design An Investigation
• How well do you know your classmates?

• You are going to conduct research by designing and carrying out an

investigation.

• Your teacher will ask you to work with a partner.

• What sort of things could you find out?

11
Investigation Example
• Before you start your investigation, let’s look at an example:

• Nadiya’s group have chosen the topic Colours.

• They write down 10 data items for their classmates to

choose from: Red, orange, pink, green, orange, purple,
blue, yellow, lilac, indigo

• They think of a statement: My favourite colour is …

• They pass the investigation form around for the class to

complete by writing their name against their favourite
colour.

12
Activity 1
Let’s Choose an investigation and use the table
Practise provided in your student guide to capture
information from your class. • Decide on ten items for your classmates to choose
from.
You can choose one of the following suggestions or
use an idea of your own: • You may wish to add an extra instruction. For
example, in the case of picking a favourite, you may
• BOOKS I have read … write the instruction “Choose one item only”.
• SPORT I play …
• PLACES I have visited … • Working with your partner, complete the Data
• FOOD I like eating … Capture form.
• ANIMALS I have a pet …
• TV PROGRAMMES I enjoy watching … • Now check the final version of your form:
• Are there any spelling mistakes?
• If you have given extra instructions, are they
clear?

13 • Keep your work safe, ready for next lesson.

Investigation

Topic: Statement : My favourite

14
Terminology
• Respondent – a person who replies to a questionnaire or data
capture form

15
• For an investigation you should begin by
Lesson deciding what you want to know:
• Choose a topic
Summary – • Find ten items for that topic
• Write the statement
Designing An • Complete the Data Capture Form
• Check spelling and grammar
Investigation • Make copies of the form to use with your
respondents

Make sure that you give your respondents

any additional instructions (for example
choose one answer from the list OR
16 choose all that apply)
