Linking Verbs
A linking verb shows the position or state of being of the subject (To be).
Linking verbs do not show action
Examples:
is, am, are, was, were, be, been, has, have, had, do, does,
did, may, might, can, could, will, would, shall, should, are
being, might have been, become, seems
Action Verbs
A verb is a word that shows action and tells what the subject does
Examples: yell, run, swim, write, make, buy
The child loves his parents.
Penelope drove her car home.
linking action
The students are really studying hard. (Linking = are, Action= studying)
*really is an adverb
Irregular: Does not follow the –ed pattern. Instead, the spelling changes
“TO GROW”
