Fertilizer was added to plant B once a week (both are tomato

plants).

Hypothesis: If a tomato plant is fertilized, then it will produce more

tomatoes than a plant that is not fertilized.
Independent Variable: Fertilizer
Dependent variable (responding): tomato produced
Hypothesis
- A Hypothesis is a tentative explanation for an observation,
phenomenon, or scientific problem that can be tested by further
investigation.
- Suggest a possible explanation for things in a way that can be
tested.
- An educated guess at a question.
- Making statements in such a way they can be tested/verified.

-. Must include variables
What are variables?
Is anything that can change or be changed. In other words, it is
any factor that can be manipulated, controlled for, or measured
in an experiment.

Independent variable: “Cause”. that is changed. The one that

influences the “behavior” of the Dependent variable.
Dependent variable: “Effect”. is the variable being tested and
measured in a scientific experiment. “Responding variable”.
Controlled variable: is not changed throughout an experiment. By
keeping a variable constant, you ensure your results remain accurate.
If you have an experiment without a control, then you can't be
completely sure of the cause and effect.

Activity 1
LET’S PRACTICE CREATING SOME HYPOTHESES
STATEMENTS
THE FOLLOWING SCENARIOS, WOULD REQUIRE YOU TO
MAKE A STATEMENT BASED ON GIVEN INFORMATION
Observation
Peter was playing with some magnets and forgot to put them both
away when he was finished. One was in a cool area, while the other
got left out in the sun. When he went to play with them the next day,
he noticed the one left out in the sun, could not pick up as many
objects as the other that was left in the cool area.

Hypothesis?
Now from our Hypothesis statement, can we identify the:
Independent variable?
Dependent variable?
Activity 2
Jessica was admiring the plants around her home, she noticed some
plants were exposed to constant sunlight, while some where blocked
by the building. She also noticed that the plants in the constant
sunlight were fuller and greener, while the plants in the shade
appeared more pale and frail.
Hypothesis?
From your hypothesis can you identify the:
Independent variable?
Dependent variable?
